BIC offers expanded perspective at CSW

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 28 marzo 2017

the bicBIC New York — The Baha’i International Community (BIC) contributed to the discourse on the advancement of women during the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) this year.”The discussions at the UN raised fundamental questions about how the situation of millions of women around the world—economic, social, and otherwise—can best be improved,” said Saphira Rameshfar, a representative of the BIC to the UN.The Commission on the Status of Women is the single largest forum for UN Member States and other international actors focusing on women’s rights and empowerment. Every year, it attracts thousands of participants from around the world. The theme of this year’s Commission, running from 13-24 March 2017, was “Women’s Economic Empowerment in the Changing World of Work.”
“Economic empowerment cannot be equated with women simply occupying the same positions as men within the existing social order—an order that has generated tremendous disparities of wealth and resources, treated the natural environment as a reservoir of resources to be exploited at will, and prioritized economic growth over other vital concerns such as the health of families, the stability of communities, and indeed the psychological and emotional well-being of workers themselves,” Ms. Rameshfar said.Instead, the BIC proposed that women would need to have an integral and critical role in establishing new patterns of thought and behavior and new social structures that reflect the principle of the equality of women and men and the oneness of humankind.
The BIC contributed in many forums, including by sharing its statement, “Toward Prosperity: The Role of Women and Men in Building a Flourishing World Civilization,” to the Commission; screening the film Mercy’s Blessing; hosting an event to explore faith and feminism; and conducting a discussion to examine the role of youth in gender equality, among others.At the discussion hosted by the BIC to present its statement, panellists from several prominent NGOs offered their reflections on the economic structure of society, the role of the family, and the period of youth as they related to gender equality.
Religion contributes to cultural norms for the economic empowerment of women, said Azza Karam, Senior Advisor to the Multilateral Affairs Branch of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and member of the panel. “People think this area is just a small domain of the global conversation about human rights,” she said. “But it is essential to realizing the sustainable development goals.”At the Commission’s Youth Forum, which convened more than 700 young people from around the world, BIC collaborator Eric Farr suggested that one way faith communities can contribute to gender equity is by adopting a systematic process of learning.”We actually don’t know what a society that’s truly based on principles of gender equality looks like; such a society has never existed,” said Mr. Farr. He continued by explaining that the equality of women and men is an ideal toward which we, as one human family, must work. Humanity’s efforts will require an ongoing process of dialogue and learning. “What we need is to develop a new body of knowledge that draws on the insights of humanity’s great systems of knowledge, religion and science,” he concluded.Commenting on the significance of this international discourse to the Baha’i community, Bani Dugal, Principal Representative of the BIC to the UN, said “The Baha’i Faith explicitly states that the equality of women and men is not merely desired, but an eternal spiritual truth essential to humanity’s advancement and the establishment of peace.” (photo: the bic)

The EU-UK Agreement: much ado about (almost) nothing?

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 27 febbraio 2016

Dopted following unilateral action from David Cameron and permitted by the goodwill of his counterparts, the recent agreement between the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK) contains a number of reminders and adjustments that are worth getting into perspective from both a political and a legal standpoint.In this Viewpoint, Yves Bertoncini, Alain Dauvergne and António Vitorino focus on three key issues:
1. The EU-UK agreement contains a number of useful reminders for the “Eurosceptics” but also for the people of Europe as a whole;
2. The EU-UK agreement contains a limited number of substantial “reforms” whose implementation will need to be closely monitored;
3. The EU-UK agreement is likely to have only a limited impact on the European construction. When all is said and done, there is one major advantage to be gained from the conclusion of the EU-UK agreement: it now allows the people and leaders of Europe to turn their attention to the other pressing challenges that they need to face together, particularly the refugee crisis and the terrorist threat, which are far more crucial for the EU’s future and for its citizens’ well-being and prosperity.

The Augmentation of Female Influence in the Automotive Industry

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 22 ottobre 2014

milanoMILAN. Latest research reveals that women are progressively dominating the car-buying process. With an increase in licences issued to women, there are now more women than men on the road in the United States, a trend that is also being forecasted for Europe. However, 50% of women globally are dissatisfied with their vehicles, while 74% of women feel they are misunderstood by car manufacturers. Frost & Sullivan’s upcoming analyst briefing will address what this growth in power for female car customers means, an understanding of its immense potential, and how industry players should respond. The briefing will benefit Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) who are eager to learn about key global statistics on women driving and vehicle purchasing, participants along the entire automotive value chain, as well as automotive suppliers and retailers. The briefing will discuss the impact of the female consumer on the automotive industry, in addition to the identification of prospective technology trends and the inherent market and business opportunities created by the rising power of the female consumer. Key questions such as, What do women want in a car?, and What does female empowerment mean for the automotive industry?, will be heeded by Frost & Sullivan Visionary Innovation Senior Consultant Olivia Price-Walker and Frost & Sullivan Automotive & Transportation Vice President Lisa Whalen on October 21, 2014. Women are set to become a larger and more influential consumer segment than men, driving OEMs to launch specific models targeting women. “As women become the dominant car buying segment, auto makers and suppliers need to change their product development strategy”, advises Olivia Price-Walker, Frost & Sullivan Visionary Innovation Senior Consultant. “The rise of the female car purchaser is impacting OEM strategy and broadening some car categories. We believe OEMs will win by developing products and strategies that are directed at women.” As a matter of fact, OEMs like Nissan, Ford, and Volkswagen have already begun aiming new vehicle models at women. Smaller city cars started the trend followed by traditionally male categories such as luxury and SUVs. Simultaneously, OEMs are reacting to the global mega trend for health and fitness, by equipping vehicles with climate control systems for fine dust and ionising systems to filter out viruses and spores, high quality interior panelling, and ergonomic seating.

Adiponectina e la funzione cardiaca

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 25 marzo 2010
