Julian Assange Appeals for Public Support

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 27 Mag 2019

In his first publicly-released comments to supporters since his arrest, WikiLeaks founder and publisher Julian Assange has detailed the repressive conditions he faces in Britain’s Belmarsh prison and called for a campaign against his threatened extradition to the United States.“I am defenceless and am counting on you and others of good character to save my life,” Assange wrote, adding, “Truth ultimately is all we have.”Assange’s comments were made in a letter addressed to independent British journalist Gordon Dimmack, who decided to make it public following last Thursday’s announcement by the US Justice Department of additional charges against Assange under the Espionage Act. The WSWS is republishing the letter, with Dimmack’s permission, in full below.Assange explained that since he was convicted on trumped-up bail charges shortly after his arrest on April 11, he has been “isolated from all ability to prepare to defend myself, no laptop, no internet, no computer, no library so far, but even if I do get access it will be just for half an hour with everyone else once a week.”The WikiLeaks founder stated that he is allowed “Just two visits a month and it takes weeks to get someone on the call list.”All of his calls, except those to his lawyers, are monitored and limited to a maximum of ten minutes. There is a window of just 30 minutes per day for phone calls to be made “in which all prisoners compete for the phone.” Assange receives only a few pounds of phone credit per week and is not allowed to receive inbound calls. The WikiLeaks founder declared that, despite these onerous conditions, he is “unbroken albeit literally surrounded by murderers. But the days when I could read and speak and organise to defend myself, my ideals and my people are over until I am free. Everyone else must take my place.”The WikiLeaks founder stated that he faced “A superpower” that has “been preparing for 9 years with hundreds of people and untold millions spent” on the case against him.

Public consultation on the European Observation and Data Network

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 23 Mag 2019

The European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) contributes to the EU’s integrated maritime policy. It was set up as a flagship project to prepare a seamless multi-resolution digital seabed map of European waters by 2020. Following the Green Paper “Marine Knowledge 2020” It had been estimated that public bodies in European countries were spending over one billion euro a year in observing the seas and oceans including work by hydrographic organisations, geological surveys, scientists and environmental agencies. However, scientists and engineers who wanted to use the data had encountered that they were difficult to find and were hampered by restrictive usage conditions and poor interoperability. Data from different sources had different baselines, different formats, different nomenclature and different standards. The Commission Communication on “Innovation in the Blue Economy” set out a roadmap for replacing the fragmented, inaccessible and inhomogeneous repositories of marine data in the EU by a sustainable process whereby data are easily accessible, interoperable and free of restrictions on use. EMODnet is now operational.

Fighting fraud: EU public prosecutor must be fully independent, MEPs say

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 30 aprile 2015

european commissionThe European Public Prosecutor to be named to fight fraud against the EU budget and help retrieve taxpayers’ money must be fully independent and democratically accountable, MEPs stress in a draft resolution voted by Parliament on Wednesday. The resolution takes stock of the ongoing talks among member states and sets out Parliament’s priorities for the establishment of the Prosecutor’s Office.”It is vital for us to have a central European Prosecutor’s Office”, explained lead MEP Monica Macovei (EPP, RO), adding that “This means we will be able to tackle fraud more effectively, more rapidly and it would be easier to recover the funds” and that “We in the European Parliament are the guardians of the European taxpayer’s money”.In the resolution, MEPs stress that the structure of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) should be “fully independent of national governments and the EU institutions and protected from political influence and pressure”.They also underline that the rules governing the division of jurisdiction between the EPPO and the national authorities should be clearly defined in order to avoid any uncertainty. National authorities that carry out investigations which may fall under the competence of the EPPO should be obliged to inform the EPPO of these and the EPPO should have the right to take over the investigations if it finds it appropriate.Selection procedures for the positions as prosecutors should be open, objective and transparent, MEPs say. They suggest holding an open competition for candidates in which the prosecutors are appointed by Council and Parliament by common accord on the basis of a shortlist drawn up by the Commission, following an evaluation by an independent panel of experts. The Chief Prosecutor should be appointed in the same way following a hearing by Parliament, they add.Once EU member states agree to establish a European Public Prosecutor, Parliament will have to give its consent.
The resolution was endorsed by 487 votes in favour, 165 against and 33 abstentions.

An Official Statement by the American Chemical Society

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 9 Mag 2014

GP01XT2WASHINGTON. Yesterday’s release of the third National Climate Assessment (NCA) should serve as a claxon call for policymakers and the general public to take action to address and mitigate the observable and documented adverse climate disruption impacts being observed in every region and key economic sector of the United States. These impacts, which have been observed and measured, are wreaking havoc with our society. This is a not a theoretical assessment; this report cites changes we are all observing and with which we are living. The future climate trends outlined in the report are even more dire. We should all be deeply concerned.Of the report’s five major findings, the fifth describes the disturbing probable outcome of climate disruption currently being observed:“Climate change threatens human health and well-being in many ways, including through more extreme weather events and wildfire, decreased air quality, and diseases transmitted by insects, food and water.”ACS has long held the position that climate change is real and serious and that our nation needs strong policies and actions to protect against further adverse impacts, and we need to address the impacts we are already observing. For 14 years, ACS has held a climate change policy position, which has been strengthened and updated routinely as new scientific analyses became available. The current public policy statement can be found by clicking on this link.To assist its members, policymakers and the general public understand the science behind our climate, the ACS created an online Climate Science Toolkit of scientific information and resources. The American Chemical Society is a nonprofit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress. With more than 161,000 members, ACS is the world’s largest scientific society and a global leader in providing access to chemistry-related research through its multiple databases, peer-reviewed journals and scientific conferences. Its main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.

Unreported violence against women masks true extent of problem

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 15 febbraio 2014

violenceTwo-thirds of female victims of physical and/or sexual violence did not contact the police or any other service following the most serious incident of violence they had experienced, a survey from the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) can reveal. The scale of the problem therefore often remains invisible in official figures, highlighting the need to improve awareness of the issue.“FRA’s survey has uncovered shocking levels of violence against women across the EU,” said FRA Director Morten Kjaerum on V-Day, in support of the global movement to end violence against women. “42,000 women have spoken to us about their experiences of abuse at home, at work, in public and online. Their collective voices underline the urgent need to empower women to discuss and report this all too common problem so authorities can act to help end violence against women.”On 5 March, FRA will present the results of its survey on gender-based violence at a high-level conference in Brussels. It is the first and largest EU-wide survey to record the extent and nature of violence against women across the EU. The survey results are based on face-to-face interviews with 42,000 women in the 28 EU Member States. They provide reliable and comparable data on women’s experiences of various types of physical, sexual and psychological violence by current and former partners, and other perpetrators. The survey also covered women’s experiences of stalking and sexual harassment – including cyber stalking and cyber harassment – and asked adult women about their childhood experiences of violence. The conference will bring together about 250 representatives from EU institutions and bodies, international organisations, national governments and parliaments, national human rights bodies and civil society will are expected to attend. Decision makers and practitioners will hear about the extent of the problem, as a prelude to discussions about the findings and about what EU and national policy makers could do to help combat violence against women.

The course of history

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 12 dicembre 2009

A White House tape, recording the US president six days after the Watergate break-in, sealed President Nixon’s fate, forcing his resignation within weeks. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s The Gulag Archipelago, smuggled out of the USSR and published in 1973, shocked the world by describing the vast Soviet system of prison labour. Throughout history, those in power have kept secrets hidden from the public eye. But if it leads to a culture of impunity for crimes committed by the state, secrecy becomes dangerous. A culture of impunity thrives on secrecy, and on complicit media and a passive civil society.  In Turkey, both secrecy and impunity for those defending the state against its enemies at home and abroad were long taken for granted. Attempts to cast light on the activities of groups and institutions referred to as the “deep state” (derin devlet) have invariably failed. Some have even questioned whether the deep state really exists.
