Biden to visit serious materials Chicago window factory

On Monday April 27th, Vice President Biden will travel to Chicago to visit Serious Materials Chicago to discuss how the Recovery Act is creating jobs and building a 21st century economy in Chicago and across the nation.   Republic Windows and Doors declared bankruptcy in December 2008, leaving over 260 people unemployed. Serious Materials acquired the assets of the factory in February of 2009, and in early March – just weeks after the America Recovery and Reinvestment Act passed – the company announced its intention to reopen the factory and rehire 250 union employees thanks to spending under the Recovery Act. United States Senators Dick Durbin and Roland Burris along with Mayor Richard Daley will join the Vice President for this event. This event is OPEN PRESS. Vice president biden to travel to Illinois and Texas next week

On Monday April 27th, Vice President Biden will travel to Chicago, Illinois. While in Chicago, Vice President Biden will speak at the 2009 Richard J. Daley Urban Forum and hold a Recovery Act event. On Tuesday April 28th, the Vice President will be in Austin, Texas where he will visit the National Domestic Violence Hotline Center and attend a Democratic National Committee lunch. Then, the Vice President will travel to Houston, Texas to attend a Democratic National Committee dinner.

The Recovery Act is helping rural America

Washington, DC – Vice President Joe Biden and Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will travel to North Carolina on Wednesday, April 1st to highlight how the Recovery Act is helping rural America. They will travel to Faison, North Carolina to visit the Goshen Medical Center, which is a rural area clinic receiving Recovery Act funds and serves Duplin, Eastern Sampson and Southern Wayne Counties.  They will then travel to Pikeville, North Carolina to visit the area’s Rural Fire Department’s main station, which is receiving Recovery Act funds to help build a new facility, because the current station cannot accommodate the necessary ladder trucks required to adequately and safely fight fires. The Vice President and Secretary Vilsack will also make a major announcement regarding rural housing funding.

White House to Hold Recovery Act

Washington, DC  On Wednesday, March 18th, the White House will hold a Recovery and Reinvestment Act Implementation Conference for local officials.  Like state governments, city and county governments will play a crucial role in partnering with the federal government to ensure that implementation of the Recovery Act is effective, transparent and efficient.  Similar to last week’s conference for states, this day-long conference will be a chance for local officials to bring forward ideas and share best practices, as well as hear presentations from a number of Administration officials, including Earl Devaney, Chairman of the Recovery Act Transparency and Accountability Board.

Middle Class

On March 19th in St. Cloud, Minnesota, the Middle Class Task Force will hold a town hall meeting, titled “Road to Recovery: Building a Strong Middle Class through the Recovery Act.” The focus of the town hall will be to discuss ways the Recovery Act implementation will help the middle class.   The Vice President and task force members will be taking questions submitted thru the website http://www.AStrongMiddleClass.gov from people all over the country, as well as members of the audience.  The Task Force is visiting and holding its meeting at the New Flyer of America Bus Company in St. Cloud, Minnesota.  New Flyer is a leader in transit innovation and low-emission, alternative fueled vehicles. Public transportation funding in the Recovery Act will help create private sector jobs and enable more state and local governments add new, low-emission buses and expand public transportation options.  In 2008, New Flyer hired more than 90 people at its St. Cloud plant and has operated around the clock to fulfill a two-year backlog of orders.  This facility now has 650 employees.

Recovery Act Implementation Conference

Washington, DC, President Obama and Vice President Biden will hold a White House Recovery and Reinvestment Act Implementation Conference to ensure that dollars invested and spent as part of the Recovery act are effective, transparent and efficient.  Each state’s Governor has been invited to send their senior official working on Recovery Act implementation to learn about what programs and initiatives are available under the Act.  The conference will be a chance for state officials to bring forward ideas and share best practices, as well as hear presentations from a number of Cabinet Secretaries and Administration officials, including Earl Devaney, Chairman of the Recovery Act Transparency and Accountability Board.  “States have a huge responsibility in partnering with us to ensure that dollars spent as part of the Recovery Act are spent wisely, with transparency and accountability,” said Vice President Joe Biden, who has been tasked by the President to oversee the implementation of the Recovery Act.  “We’re giving each state a chance to send a high-level representative to interact first-hand with top officials here in Washington. Our hope for this conference is to meet face-to-face with the state officials and streamline this implementation process so we can get our economy running again.”
