Rescues at sea: MEPs demand EU and member states take responsibility

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 22 ottobre 2019

In a resolution adopted with 34 votes to 26 and 3 abstentions, the committee demands “a new more sustainable, reliable and permanent approach to search and rescue, replacing ad hoc solutions”. It also requests the EU countries to establish a fair and sustainable mechanism to distribute the rescued people. MEPs underline that, despite the significant drop in the arrivals of migrants and asylum-seekers to the EU in the last years, the route from Libya to Europe remains the deadliest migration route worldwide, with almost 700 hundred people gone missing so far this year, partly due to the reduction of search and rescue activities. They stress that saving lives is an act of solidarity but “first and foremost a legal obligation”. The text also points that international and EU law require to disembark rescued persons only in places of safety, adding that Libya that does not meet the criteria to be considered as such.Opening safe and legal pathways to the EU are the best way to prevent deaths at sea, add Civil Liberties MEPs, who demand solidarity among member states to relocate migrants and asylum-seekers and to step up resettlement, particularly of those evacuated from Libyan detention centres. They call for humanitarian corridors to be put in place.
Finally, the draft resolution notes that several NGOs and activists are under criminal investigation in different EU countries for saving lives in the Mediterranean and reiterates that humanitarian assistance should not be criminalised. It also asks member states to maintain their ports open to NGO vessels.MEPs will discuss this issue with the Council and the Commission in plenary on Wednesday 23 October. The non-legislative resolution will be then put to the vote on Thursday 24 October.

“Shaping the EU’s future is a common task and responsibility”

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 19 luglio 2019

The President of the European Committee of the Regions, Karl-Heinz Lambertz, said on the occasion of the election of Ursula von der Leyen by the European Parliament as the President of the European Commission: “I would like to congratulate Ursula von der Leyen on her election. The European Committee of the Regions looks forward to welcoming her to present her agenda for Europe to the EU’s assembly of locally and regionally elected representatives.” “A new way of working is needed to increase the EU’s legitimacy, ownership and proximity. The incoming Commission should fully support a greater participation of all levels of government at each phase of the EU decision-making process. I value the President-elect’s statement that ‘Our Union’s democratic system is unique, bringing together directly elected parliamentarians at local, regional, national and European levels with elected Heads of State or Government’. I count on her to build a new coordinated action from European, national, regional and local levels that allows the EU to deliver social and economic progress and to bridge the gap with its citizens.” “To fight against the climate crisis and social inequalities and ensure a just transition for all, regions and cities are the key actors in turning promises into reality. Therefore, the European Committee of the Regions supports a strong cohesion policy for all regions. Only through a multi-level cooperation and enhanced public investment capacities we will we be able to deliver a fair and sustainable Union.” “The increased turn-out of the 2019 European elections confirmed that Europe matters to citizens, in particular to the young generation. It is time to make use of this momentum to engage with Europeans in a more systematic way outside election campaigns, including through a common permanent citizens’ dialogue involving local and regional authorities.”
“Shaping EU’s future is a common task and responsibility. The European Committee of the Regions and the cities and regions of the EU stand ready to be part of the ‘Conference on the Future of Europe’.”In view of the political challenges and priorities ahead, the European Committee of the Regions has put already forward its expectations and proposals for the period 2019-2024 in a blueprint and a resolution adopted on 26 June 2019. They argue that for the EU to regain citizens’ trust and address major current challenges, EU decisions and policies must be shaped together and anchored locally.

FAO’s Kadiresan: CEOs should take responsibility for sustainability

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 31 marzo 2019

Speaking on the sidelines of the Responsible Business Forum on Food and Agriculture in Bangkok, Kadiresan said that the creation of dedicated heads of sustainability within large companies shows that they do have a commitment to social responsibility, but that this does not yet go far enough.“Does it translate at the highest level, being the CEO? Does it translate to the board, and does the demand come from the shareholders?” Kadiresan says.
Without that high-level pressure, sustainability initiatives have not necessarily translated into tangible action on the ground, she says, while CEOs are still principally judged on short-term financial metrics, rather than on their long-term sustainability initiatives.“These interests have to change from short-term to long-term,” Kadiresan says. “I have often had, even heard the sustainability heads telling me: ‘we will have to wait for another 10 years when we get a new generation of CEOs’. So what does that tell you? That you’ve got to have not just these units creating buzz, but you need to have the vision and also to influence the shareholders. The shareholders influence the CEO and the board.”
Large international development players like the FAO are increasingly exploring partnerships with multinational agribusinesses as a mechanism to amplify their development impact. However, despite an apparent public consensus on significant issues—from climate change to rural livelihoods—the two sides still often struggle to communicate and find common goals, according to Kadiresan. “Partnerships are pretty difficult, because our agendas and our priorities are often different,” she says. However, the conversations are happening, and “by this dialogue and conversation, hopefully it can build more common understanding and also bring those priorities sooner together rather than later.”

EU countries that do not host asylum seekers should not get EU solidarity funding, says lead MEP

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 11 marzo 2017

europa-comunitariaAll EU countries must share responsibility for hosting asylum seekers arriving in Europe. So it follows those that refuse to do so should not get solidarity funding from other EU member states, Cecilia Wikström (ALDE, SE), lead MEP on the reform the Dublin asylum system told the Civil Liberties Committee on Thursday.Ms Wikström presented her draft report on the proposal to review the Dublin III Regulation, which determines the member state responsible for processing an asylum application. She proposed making several amendments to the Commission´s proposal:
no option for member states refusing to accept asylum seekers to pay a “solidarity contribution” of €250,000 per person instead. If an EU country refuses to participate in the relocation system, then it should not be eligible for solidarity payments from other member states, through the European Structural and Investment Funds,
transfers of asylum-seekers to other EU countries should be automatically triggered when the first country has reached 100% of its allocated share (not 150%, as proposed by the European Commission),
no “admissibility checks” ahead of relocation,
faster family reunification and special focus on children, and applicants for international protection should have the option to register as a group (maximum 30 people) upon arrival in Europe. They would then be transferred together.

The Church’s realism and trust in time of crisis

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 11 giugno 2009

The work of the European meeting of bishops with responsibility for social issues from Europe’s Bishops’ Conferences, attended by 37 participants representing 22 Bishops’ Conferences, has come to an end. The meeting was organised in collaboration with the Croatian Bishops’ Conference and hosted by the Archbishop of Zagreb and CCEE Vice-president, Cardinal Josip Bozanic, who in his opening address explained the reasons behind the meeting: “The Church is always deeply involved where at stake is human life, the dignity of the human person, the common good, the right to work, to a dignified life and the defence of the weakest social classes”. Confirming the centrality of the human person, the Church defends “the public character of faith” and never tires of reminding society “of those values which are non-negotiable, because they are not placed there by human beings”. The Church is committed to “making her own responsible contribution to the drawing up of relevant answers to social problems, on the basis of her own heritage of faith and social experience”.   In Europe there is certainly no lack of episcopal commissions or Christian-inspired civil organisations established for this service. In the work of the Church continental Commissions, too, have a guiding role, that of identifying the shared areas of common work. If therefore on the one hand there is the need for profound intellectual work on the Church’s social doctrine for which Catholic universities and study centres have a strong duty to make available their knowledge and competence, with greater disposition to intellectual charity and a deeper faith in the ability of the Christian Word to animate even modern cultures and including their social syntheses; then on the other hand it is also necessary that awareness of the communal commitment increases. One notes, in fact, a certain ignorance among the faithful themselves about the Church’s social doctrine, which is often perceived as something separate from the concrete and immediate action of the charitable gesture.  From this stemmed the invitation from the CCEE President to the European “Justice and Peace” Commissions so that through their action they may bear “a prophetic word to the world”, a message of hope above all “in the defence of the most disadvantaged”. For this reason Cardinal Erdo revealed his desire to propose the constitution of a specific episcopal Commission to focus on these issues within CCEE.  The second part of the meeting focussed on the current economic-financial crisis. Introducing the theme was once again the Secretary of the Vatican dicastery Mgr Crepaldi, who spoke about the content of the Pontifical Council’s Note A New Pact to Re-establish the International Financial System. Unemployment is one of the most visible and serious consequences of the crisis. It is a problem which in some countries acquires ever more dramatic tones, impacts on a greater number of people and requires particular attention from the Church due to the serious consequences deriving from it for individiuals, families and the whole of society.  The meeting was interspersed with moments of prayer and the celebration of Mass which, together with the climate of friendship and fraternal sharing, provided reasons for hope for future collaboration on pastoral social action in Europe. Radical right in the European Parliament

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 10 giugno 2009

The results of the European elections show a strengthening of Eurosceptic and radical right-wing parties which want to block a European policy. The General Secretary of the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe (CPCE), Bishop Michael Bünker (Vienna), commented: “The European Parliament must not become a showplace for extremist forces. The radical right will harm people in Europe.”  Bünker explained: “Even if a few of these parties have presented themselves as defenders of the Christian West during the election campaign, the content of their policies is diametrically opposed to the Christian message. The Christian faith requires love of neighbour and respect for others, solidarity and responsibility for a peaceful life together. That does not go with xenophobic and racist slogans.”  The Protestant churches in Europe see in the EU, despite its defects, an important project of European unification. Even before the vote they called for democracy in Europe to be strengthened.  Bünker: “Particularly in times of crisis in which close collaboration beyond frontiers is indispensable, we cannot afford to allow the common effort for a peaceful and unified Europe to be threatened.”

Church bomb attack

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 26 maggio 2009

A teenage girl and a woman were killed and over a dozen others wounded when a bomb went off during Mass at the Church of Assumption in Dhobighat on the outskirts of Kathmandu, Nepal on Saturday 23 May. There were 150 people in the Church when the blast went off.  Extremists demanding an end to religious freedoms in Nepal are believed to have been behind the attack.  Caritas Nepal Director Fr. Silas Bogati was celebrating the Mass. He said, “We could never imagine that someone could carry out such a cowardly act and kill and injure so many people. In Nepal, we been having good religious harmony and some extremist group is trying to disturb this.” Pamphlets from a small Hindu militant group called the National Defence Army were found at the scene. The group previously claimed responsibility for the killing of a priest in eastern Nepal last July. They’re fighting for the restoration the nation’s Hindu monarchy that was abolished in 2008.   The attack has been condemned in Nepal by the incoming government, many of the political parties, human rights activists, and churches and faith groups. The church organised joint prayers on Sunday for Christians, Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims. Fr. Bogati said, “We are holding prayers to show our solidarity and religious tolerance. We are also planning an all religious group rally this Sunday. The attack has created psychological fear among Christians. Some armed groups are trying to disturb religious harmony in Nepal but they will never be successful.” There is little history of religious conflict in Nepal, where more than 80 percent of the 27 million people are Hindu.
