First Unveils Infinite Recharge Robotics Game as Part of the First Rise

FIRST®, a robotics community that prepares young people for the future, launched the 2020 FIRST® Robotics Competition season today with the Kickoff of a new robotics game called INFINITE RECHARGESMbefore a crowd of 1,200 people, including Sen. Maggie Hassan, D.-N.H., U.S. Rep. Chris Pappas, D.-N.H., and Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig, D.-N.H., at Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester, New Hampshire, hometown of FIRST HQ. Nearly 100,000 high-school students on 3,898 teams at 160 venues around the world joined the 2020 Kickoff via live broadcast. INFINITE RECHARGE is part of the 2020 FIRST season, FIRST RISE, powered by Star Wars: Force for Change. FIRST has teamed up with Lucasfilm and parent company Disney as part of the Star Wars: Force for Change philanthropic initiative to inspire the next generation of heroes and innovators, creating a place where collaboration and collective wisdom can elevate new ideas and foster growth. FIRST RISE empowers FIRST participants to explore the future of cities and architecture, building communities filled with inspiration, creativity, and – most importantly – hope.In INFINITE RECHARGE, two alliances work to protect FIRST City from approaching asteroids caused by a distant space skirmish. Each alliance, along with their trusty droids, race to collect and score Power Cells in order to energize their Shield Generator for maximum protection. To activate sections of the Shield Generator, droids manipulate their Control Panels after scoring a specific number of Power Cells. Near the end of the match, droids race to their Rendezvous Point to get their Shield Generator operational in order to protect the city.
At today’s Kickoff, teams were shown the INFINITE RECHARGE game field and challenge details for the first time and received the Kickoff Kit from the Kit of Parts, which is made up of motors, batteries, control system components, construction materials, and a mix of additional automation components – with limited instructions.
Working with adult mentors, students have limited time to design, build, program, and test their robots to meet the season’s engineering challenge. Once these young inventors build a robot, their teams will participate beginning in late February in one or more of the global 173 Regional and District events that measure the effectiveness of each robot, the power of collaboration, and the determination of students.By participating in FIRST, students gain confidence to explore the innovation process while learning valuable science, engineering, technology, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. FIRST Robotics Competition participants are eligible to apply for more than $80 million in FIRST Scholarships from colleges, universities, and technical programs. Students also learn and apply the FIRST ethos of Gracious Professionalism® via a signature set of FIRST Core Values. The 2020 FIRST Robotics Competition Kickoff event is an opportunity for teams from all over the world to come together as a community to share in the excitement of seeing the new game unveiled. Teams at nearly 160 Kickoff sites in countries all over the world such as Australia, Canada, Dominican Republic, Israel, Mexico, Turkey, and the United States watched the proceedings via live broadcast.

Ambarella to Demonstrate New Robotics Platform During CES 2020

Ambarella, Inc. (Nasdaq: AMBA), an AI vision silicon company, today announced that it will demonstrate its new robotics platform during CES 2020. Based on Ambarella’s CVflow® architecture, it targets automated guided vehicles (AGV), consumer robots, industrial robots, and emerging Industry 4.0 applications. The robotics platform provides a unified software infrastructure for robotics perception across Ambarella’s CVflow SoC family including the CV2, CV22, CV25, and S6LM. It provides easy access and acceleration for the most common robotics functions including stereo processing, key points extraction, neural network processing, and Open Source Computer Vision Library (OpenCV) functions.Ambarella will demonstrate the highest-end version of the platform during CES 2020: A single CV2 chip will perform stereo processing (up to 4Kp30 or multiple 1080p30 pairs), object detection, key points tracking, occupancy grid, and visual odometry. Teams of students and adult mentors gathered at more than 100 international Kickoff events to get a first glimpse of this season’s game, which focuses on building cities of the future: SKYSTONE presented by Qualcomm. An estimated 78,000 students in more than 20 countries around the world will participate this season. FIRST Strategic Partner Qualcomm Incorporated returns as the Season Presenting Sponsor for the 2019-2020 FIRST Tech Challenge season. During the SKYSTONE season, Qualcomm® technology will enable more than 7,800 FIRST Tech Challenge teams to create Android smartphone-controlled robots powered by the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ mobile platform. This control system technology enables students to build innovative and advanced robot designs with autonomous and vision processing features. In addition to technology, Qualcomm directly supports FIRST events, programs, and thousands of teams globally, with its commitment to teams via direct funding and time donated by hundreds of employees. Teams must program their robots to play in three sections: autonomous, driver-controlled, and the end game. The game is completed as teams move their structures into their optimal space, topping it off with a crown achievement – a final capstone of their own design to symbolize their reach into the sky. Points are added throughout game play, and penalties are assigned at the end of the match.

Vän Robotics Receives SC Launch, Inc. Investment

SCRA announces a $200,000 SC Launch, Inc. investment in Vän Robotics. The innovative, Columbia-based company was accepted into SCRA’s entrepreneurial program, SC Launch, in January 2017. Vän Robotics is revolutionizing student learning by combining artificial intelligence and proven teaching techniques into friendly, approachable, and funny robots. The company’s initial robot, ABii, complements classroom learning, or can be used to facilitate learning at home. ABii is the first artificial intelligence tutor and was created by Laura Boccanfuso, Ph.D., based on ten years of research at University of South Carolina and Yale University and her passion for integrating technology into the classroom. In addition to the SC Launch, Inc. investment, Vän Robotics received three grants from SCRA to build a prototype that was used in product testing to get user feedback and to conduct larger consumer tests. The investment will be used to manufacture the company’s first 700 consumer robots.
SCRA is a state-chartered organization that fuels job creation and grows South Carolina’s innovation economy. Through SC Launch, early-stage companies are provided mentoring and grants and may be eligible for an investment from SC Launch, Inc. The SC Launch program is open to qualified South Carolina companies in the Advanced Materials/Manufacturing, Information Technology and Life Sciences sectors.

AMP Robotics Launches New AI Guided Dual-Robot System for the Recycling Industry

AMP Robotics Corp. (“AMP”), a pioneer in artificial intelligence (“AI”) and robotics for the recycling industry, today announced the launch of its new AMP Cortex™ dual-robot system (“DRS”) focused on material recovery in Municipal Solid Waste (“MSW”), Electronic Waste (“E-waste”), and Construction and Demolition (“C&D”). The AMP Cortex DRS expands on their existing product line of high-speed recycling robotics guided by the AMP Neuron™ AI platform and uses two high-performance robots that rapidly sort, pick, and place materials at an unprecedented speed of 160 pieces per minute creating optimum productivity. AMP Neuron uses computer vision and machine learning to recognize different colors, textures, shapes, sizes, and patterns to identify material characteristics. Then, it directs the robots to pick and place the targeted material. The system can operate 24/7 with continuous high-precision sorting, preventing contaminants in material streams, and increasing the overall quality and purity of commodities to be reclaimed. The system is modularly designed to drop into existing facilities without requiring a major retrofit or downtime, enabling customers to quickly benefit from advanced automation.The unique design of the two robots opens up new material applications, namely the ability to efficiently process difficult material streams of post-consumer fiber. From sheets of paper to cardboard, sorting fiber is a major challenge for recycling lines, often becoming a contaminant for other recycled commodities. Youth Robotics Teams and Global Brands Celebrate Innovation and STEM Inspiration at Record-Breaking Event in Detroit

This week, more than 17,000 students (ages 6-18) from around the world traveled to Detroit, putting their innovation skills to the test at the annual FIRST Championship Presented by Qualcomm Incorporated, held at the Cobo Center and Ford Field.The four-day Detroit event, attended by more than 43,000 people, came down to a heart-pounding conclusion Saturday night in front of thousands of cheering fans at Ford Field when teams competed in match finals for the FIRST® Robotics Competition and FIRST® Tech Challenge world championships. Four teams from Brighton, Mich.; Sterling Heights, Mich.; Eindhoven, Netherlands; and Philadelphia, Pa., were the FIRST Robotics Competition Winning Alliance for this year’s game, DESTINATION: DEEP SPACE Presented by The Boeing Company. Teams from Vincentown, N.J.; Hollis, N.H.; and Mundelein, Ill., were the FIRST Tech Challenge Winning Alliance for ROVER RUCKUS Presented by Qualcomm.FIRST Championship, the world’s largest celebration of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) for students, kicked off last week in Houston with 33,000 people. Altogether, a record 76,000 people participated in the two-week event.

Four teams from California – Atascadero, Madera, Burlingame, and El Segundo – were the FIRST Robotics Competition Winning Alliance for this year’s game, DESTINATION: DEEP SPACE Presented by The Boeing Company. Teams from Palm Harbor, Fla.; Elon, N.C.; and Leawood, Kan., were the FIRST Tech Challenge Winning Alliance for ROVER RUCKUS Presented by Qualcomm.Over 15,000 students, ages 6-18, participated in FIRST Championship Houston. FIRST Championship, the world’s largest celebration of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) for students, will continue next week with 15,000 more students in Detroit (April 24-27).

NRI Starts to Develop Robotics Business in Australia, First in the Field of Distance Education

Nomura Research Institute, Ltd. (NRI), a leading provider of consulting services and system solutions, and a parent company of ASG Group Limited (Perth, Australia), today announced that NRI started to implement a trial project for developing robotics business in the field of distance education with Charters Towers School of Distance Education in Queensland, Australia.Queensland government delivers distance education services through seven state schools of distance education which were established to provide a schooling service for geographically isolated and other home based students with limited educational choices.
Additionally, schools of distance education provide services to enhance learning opportunities by offering a wider range of subject choices for mainstream school students (for example, due to limited number of Japanese language teachers, schools of distance education can also provide Japanese language classes for schools in such major towns as Brisbane) and providing a service for by choice home based learners and students in a range of alternative education centres.
In Australia, it is estimated that about from twenty thousand to twenty five thousand students use distance education services, and Charters Towers School of Distance Education is providing services for two thousand and two hundred students.
At present, distance education services provide PCs and tablets displaying texts, pictures and generating voice with headsets. It is hard for teachers to see students’ conditions, level of understanding and environment for study, and it is too hard for the students to talk and play with other students.NRI will introduce a communication system with movable face-to-face communication robots which provide the teacher and the student with free angle views of the other and move. In other words, the robots are able to create a virtual classroom combining schools in remote areas and major towns, and also provide opportunities to go to their classrooms virtually for geographically isolated and/or physically handicapped students.
The new system makes it easy to provide classes for group, enabling teachers to keep tabs on student’s concentration and level of understanding from their expressions and behaviors, eventually improves the quality of education.
Students can naturally have irreplaceable and precious experiences in their childhood like making friends, chitchatting on the latest fashion and so forth in break time between classes.
To sum up, our system will bring various communication opportunities in group life.NRI started the trial project in June, 2018, and plans to complete it in August, 2018, aiming to go live with the service in early 2019, as well as to take the future possibility of application to the field of healthcare and agriculture into consideration.

Unique Discoveries on Barrier Reef Seen at 80 Meters for the First Time Using Blueye Robotics Underwater Drone

The Great Barrier Reef Legacy (GBRLegacy) crew led by Dr. Dean Miller has teamed with underwater drone creators Blueye Robotics to investigate the impact of ocean temperatures on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. The Blueye Robotics Pioneer can dive eight times deeper than the average scuba enthusiast, reaching depths of 150 meters. It was used when Miller and a team of renowned marine scientists recently explored Australia’s coral reef and the bleaching that is killing portions of the fragile ecosystem.GBRLegacy’s 21-day exploration revealed some surprises, including large expanses of Halimeda algae on deep sections of reef slopes in the far northern section of the northeast coast of Queensland. Healthy Halimeda creates a vast ecosystem that resembles a green meadow. With the help of the Pioneer, the team was able to see down at 80 meters that the Halimeda reefs appeared to be spared by the bleaching. “Using the Blueye, this was the first time we could bring images back from that depth and show that despite coral bleaching or warm water affecting a huge percentage of the reefs in that area, down at 80 meters it appeared that those reefs have been spared. That was a good sign,” said Miller, director of science and media for the Great Barrier Reef Legacy.In particular, Miller said, the low frequency of the drone’s electromagnetic waves seemed to intrigue Australia’s grey reef sharks. The waves pose no danger for the sharks, and the sharks’ attraction to them will make it easier for researchers to study the species more closely.Australia’s ecological and business communities are also embracing the Blueye Pioneer as an important tool. “Benefits for Humanity: From Space to Surgery,” a NASA documentary published February 22, 2018, explores the space robotics origins of Synaptive Medical’s robotic digital microscopes, Modus V™ and BrightMatter™ Drive. We are using robots to build kids.”FIRST POWER UP finds FIRST Robotics Competition teams trapped in an 8-bit video game. Each three-team alliance has three ways to help defeat the boss: Tipping the scale or the alliance’s switch in their favor to earn points, exchanging power cubes for power ups (force, boost, and levitate) to gain a temporary advantage during the match, and climbing the scale tower to face the boss. The alliance with the highest score at the end of the match, which includes autonomous and teleoperated periods, defeats the boss and wins the game.At today’s Kickoff, teams were shown the FIRST POWER UP game field and challenge details for the first time, and received the Kickoff Kit from the Kit of Parts, which is made up of motors, batteries, control system components, construction materials, and a mix of additional automation components – with limited instructions.Working with adult mentors, students have six weeks to design, build, program, and test their robots to meet the season’s engineering challenge. Once these young inventors build a robot, their teams will participate in one or more of the global 158 Regional and District events that measure the effectiveness of each robot, the power of collaboration, and the determination of students.By participating in FIRST, students gain confidence to explore the innovation process while learning valuable science, engineering, technology, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
