World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder Meets with Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 7 giugno 2021

Rome. Ambassador Ronald S. Lauder, President of the World Jewish Congress, and Mrs. Noemi Di Segni, President of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities, met this morning with Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi.Ambassador Lauder and Mrs. Di Segni discussed with the Prime Minister the critical need to fight against antisemitism, especially against the background of an unprecedented surge in the United States and Europe, and with special attention to left wing political groups that boycott Israel, promote pro-Palestinian distortions of realty and deny Israel’s right to exist and defend itself. The discussion also focused on the need to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism, changes in criminal offenses in Italy related to hate crimes, legitimization of fascism, and far right radicalization. Ambassador Lauder also highlighted the need for Italy – as part of its economic recovery plan – to invest in tourism featuring special itineraries of Italian Jewish heritage, including the Ghetto and synagogues of Venice and other important Jewish sites.Italy is the first country in Europe that Ambassador Lauder has visited following the prolonged travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.Ambassador Lauder and Mrs. Di Segni were accompanied at the meeting by the Prime Minister’s Diplomatic Advisor Ambassador Luigi Mattioli, and WJC Executive Vice President Maram Stern. The meeting occurs on a historically significant date; on 4 June 1944, the city of Rome was freed from Nazi fascist occupation by Allied forces led by the U.S. Army.

WJC President Ronald S. Lauder urges international condemnation as three people killed in Israel under siege of rockets

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 7 Maggio 2019

NEW YORK – Terrorists in the Gaza Strip have fired some 600 rockets at Israel in the last two days, killing three people and wounding several others. Israelis have been asked not to attend the funerals of the victims amid the dangerous escalation in the south. Israel has responded to the intensive barrage with retaliatory air strikes, resulting in the deaths of eight Palestinians.World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder said in response to the attacks: “Hamas and its accomplices in the Gaza Strip have laid siege to the State of Israel, indiscriminately terrorizing its citizens and snuffing out innocent lives in an unprovoked attempt to destroy the Jewish state and subvert any efforts to live in peace and coexistence.”“We call on the international community to face the murderous reality on the ground caused by Hamas and not be taken in by Hamas’ perverted bid to draw international sympathy for its own tyrannical cause and contemptuous disregard for human life. It is beyond time for the UN Security Council and the entire international community to unequivocally condemn Hamas in the strongest terms possible and hold it completely responsible for the loss of life and continued provocation in the territory under its control,” Lauder said. “Every second that passes without such condemnation gives Hamas carte blanche to persist with its cynical violence, threatening and exploiting the lives of both Israelis and Palestinians. This is terror, plain and simple, and must be not be tolerated or condoned in any way.”

WJC President Ronald S. Lauder praises UK’s ‘principled’ decision to vote against Item 7 at UNHRC

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 23 marzo 2019

NEW YORK – World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder on Thursday praised the United Kingdom’s announcement that it has decided to vote against Permanent Agenda Item 7 resolutions at the United Nations Human Rights Council. The UNHRC is currently meeting in Geneva for its 40th session, in which member states will be voting on five anti-Israel resolutions, four of which fall under Item 7 – the only permanent item on the agenda targeting a particular country. In response to Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt’s announcement Thursday in an op-ed in the London Jewish Chronicle, Lauder said:“The World Jewish Congress and our 100 affiliated communities worldwide extend our deep gratitude and praise to the United Kingdom for taking the principled stance of voting against the blatantly one-sided and biased resolutions up for debate under Item 7, the only country-specific item on the United Nations Human Rights Council’s agenda.”“As we have said time and again, the UNHRC routinely misses the critical opportunity to expose the accountability of the Palestinian leadership for the deterioration of human rights in the territories under their control, and instead chooses to scapegoat Israel with severe and absurd double standards,” Lauder said. “These resolutions place undue blame on Israel for human rights abuses, while explicitly ignoring the responsibility and culpability of the Palestinian leadership, including Hamas, to this regard.”“This one-sided approach directly harms the Palestinians and exacerbates their suffering, while derailing the Council from meaningful and effective debate and undermining its credibility as a body dedicated to defending human rights around the world,” Lauder added.“We urge other European Union states to follow in the UK’s lead and firmly reject the UNHRC’s pathological promotion of anti-Israel resolutions,” Lauder said. Marie van der Zyl, President of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, said: “We congratulate the UK on its new and principled stance on announcing that it will fulfill its promise to vote against all resolutions tabled under the UN Human Rights Council’s discriminatory Item 7. We would particularly like to thank Prime Minister Theresa May and Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt for their leadership on this issue. All supporters of human rights should applaud this move, which could in time lead to the UN ceasing to be discredited through its overt partisanship and becoming trusted once again as the arbiter of universal human rights that we all want it to be. We call on other states who genuinely support the advancement of human rights to follow the UK’s moral stand.”

Ronald S. Lauder: President Santos ‘has set an example for other parts of the world’

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 10 ottobre 2016

new yorkNEW YORK – World Jewish Congress (WJC) President Ronald S. Lauder today welcomed the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s decision to give this year’s Nobel Peace Prize to Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos. “President Santos thoroughly deserves this award. He really is a peace-maker,” Lauder said.Ronald S. Lauder declared: “President Santos has worked incredibly hard for peace, and he has proved that even the most entrenched conflicts can be resolved if all parties are willing to sit down, negotiate, and commit to peaceful solutions. He has set an example for other parts of the world.”Reaching peace after more than five decades and a conflict that cost the lives of so many Colombians is a major achievement. President Santos can be proud of that. Trying to make peace requires a lot of courage and tenacity, and he has shown that many, many times.“I sincerely hope that it will be possible for him to secure a permanent end to this conflict, despite the outcome of last Sunday’s referendum, and I am sure he will succeed eventually.”As the Nobel Committee rightly remarked, this award is also a tribute to the strength and sense for justice of the people of Colombian who have not given up hope of reaching a just and lasting peace.”The Colombian peace process is not completed yet, but hopefully Colombians will feel encouraged by this important award for their president,” the WJC president stated.Lauder has met with Santos numerous times. In March 2016, Lauder was honored in Washington, DC by Colombia’s ambassador to the United States, Juan Carlos Pinzon.
The World Jewish Congress (WJC) is the international organization representing Jewish communities in 100 countries to governments, parliaments and international organizations.

WJC President Ronald S. Lauder calls Filipino leader’s Hitler praise ‘revolting’ and ‘unacceptable’

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 2 ottobre 2016

JERUSALEM – World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Laudertoday condemned the statement of President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines praising Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler and saying that he would be happy to slaughter drug addicts in his country just as Hitler slaughtered the Jews. “These statements are revolting, and President Duterte must retract them and apologize,” Lauder said in Jerusalem, where he was attending the funeral of former Israeli President Shimon Peres.Ronald S. Lauder added: “We just marked the 75th anniversary of Babi Yar, the massacre of more than 33,000 Jews in Ukraine by Nazi Germany, in a mere two days. Now, the elected leader of the Philippines openly calls for the mass murder of people who are addicted to drugs.”Drug abuse is a serious issue. But what President Duterte said is not only profoundly inhumane, but it demonstrates an appalling disrespect for human life that is truly heart-breaking for the democratically elected leader of a great country,” declared Lauder.Duterte made the remarks in the city of Davao, where he previously served as mayor and implemented a tough anti-crime policy. He told reporters he had been “portrayed to be some cousin of Hitler” by his critics.”Hitler massacred three million Jews, now, there is three million drug addicts. I’d be happy to slaughter them,” Duterte said, adding: “At least Germany had Hitler. The Philippines wouldn’t.” He said he would like to “finish the problem of my country and save the next generation”.

Ronald S. Lauder welcomes Pope Francis’ visit to Auschwitz

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 31 luglio 2016

auschwitz-ii-birkenau-4NEW YORK – World Jewish Congress (WJC) President Ronald S. Lauder has hailed Pope Francis’ upcoming visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau as “a strong signal” against hatred and called the Catholic Church leader “one of the closest allies Jews have today in the fight against anti-Semitism and bigotry.”Lauder said ahead of Pope Francis’ visit to the former Nazi German death camp this Friday: “The World Jewish Congress welcomes Pope Francis’ historic visit to Auschwitz. Although there are no grave markers, this is the world’s largest Jewish graveyard.“It is also one of the most horrific places on the planet, and we find it appropriate that Pope Francis does not wish to make a speech during his visit, but to hold a silent prayer service together with over 1,000 survivors and representatives from around the world, as tribute to the 1.1 million men, women and children murdered at the camp.“Auschwitz is an eternal reminder of what can happen when hatred is allowed to fester, when the world remains silent in the face of evil and looks the other way as unspeakable crimes are being committed nearby,” declared the WJC president.“Pope Francis is one of the closest allies Jews have today in the fight against anti-Semitism, bigotry and hatred. He is a true friend of the Jewish people, a man who reaches out to others and embraces them. Never over the past 2,000 years have Catholic-Jewish relations been better.“We thank him for going to Auschwitz. His visit there sends an important signal to the world that this dark chapter must never be forgotten and that the truth about what happened seven decades ago must not be obfuscated,” he said.Referring to the murder of French priest, Jacques Hamel, earlier this week, as well as other terrorist acts that have taken place around the world, Lauder added: “This brutal attack in a house of worship, against an elderly priest, has come as a shock to all of us, and at a time when our societies are shaken by evil acts of terror, we must stand as one.“We must speak out and not be silent. We must defend each other, and we must look after one another: one religious community after the other, one country after the other. The scourge of terrorism, fanaticism and intolerance won’t be defeated unless we are united in our resolve to defeat it, across religious and cultural divides.”

Ronald S. Lauder: “We must stand as one in the face of this great threat”

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 28 luglio 2016

new yorkNEW YORK – World Jewish Congress (WJC) President Ronald S. Lauder on Tuesday issued a strong condemnation of the terrorist attack at a church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, near Rouen, in France, calling it “a monstrous and evil act of murder committed against innocent people inside a house of worship.” Lauder conveyed his and the Jewish people’s condolences to the people of France, to Pope Francis and the leaders of the Catholic Church in France. Lauder said: “This morning, my thoughts and prayers are with the victims of yet another atrocious attack, and with the good people of France who sadly have become so familiar with the reality of terrorism in recent months.“Alas, there is no respite. Every day, these terrorists make it abundantly clear to the world that nothing is sacred to them, that they will not shy away from any execrable affront to the most basic values of our society.“Let’s be clear: this is not a war between religions, but between good and evil. We must stand as one in the face of this great threat. We must not be intimidated, but cherish our freedom, including the freedom to worship. We must speak out and not be silent. We must defend each other, and we must look after one another: one religious community after the other, one country after the other. This evil scourge won’t be defeated unless we are united in our resolve to defeat it,” said the WJC president.According to reports, an 86-year Catholic priest, Fr. Jacques Hamel, died after his throat was slit this morning in the church. Together with two nuns and two parishioners, Fr. Hamel had been being taken hostage by two men who reportedly shouted ‘Daesh’ (a synonym for the Islamist terror group ISIS) when storming into the church. One other victim was in a life-threatening condition, and the three other also suffered injuries.Police stormed the church at around 11 a.m. local time on Tuesday and killed the two attackers. French President François Hollande said in a statement that ISIS was behind the attack. Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray lies on the outskirts of Rouen, the capital of the Normandy region in north-western France. It was the first such attack committed by jihadist terrorist against a church in Europe.

WJC supports change in US legislation to strip Nazi war criminals of social security benefits

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 23 ottobre 2014

New YorkNEW YORK – The World Jewish Congress  announced its support for a change in United States law that presently allows certain presumed Nazi war criminals who were granted US citizenship by making false statements to immigration authorities to keep their social security entitlements in case they voluntarily leave the country. As reported by the ‘Associated Press’ on Sunday, numerous Nazi war criminals evaded deportation from the US by voluntarily leaving the country and renouncing their US citizenship rather than going through lengthy and costly deportation proceedings. They thus continued to draw on pension and other benefits whereas in the case of deportation, they would have been stripped of these entitlements. During the 1990s, the WJC supported the US Justice Department’s stance that not stripping Nazi war criminals who had entered the US on false pretenses of their Social Security benefits would hasten their departure, a goal sought at the time by Holocaust survivors who did want to have erstwhile Nazis and Nazi collaborators living in their midst. World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder declared: “While we understand the position taken by the Office of Special Investigations at the Justice Department at the time, we strongly feel that today the relevant legislation should be changed and that Nazi criminals should no longer benefit from Social Security payments if they illegally acquired US citizenship after the war. The expectation was that most if not all the individuals in question would be prosecuted by the European countries to which they returned or where their alleged criminal activities had been committed. Sadly, this proved not to be the case. And we note with grave concern that other countries have also been paying social benefits to Nazi war criminals.“The World Jewish Congress commends the Office of Special Investigations for its yeoman’s work over the years in exposing and deporting Nazi war criminals living in the US, and for stripping many of them of their Social Security benefits. At the same time, we continue to insist that all suspected Nazi criminals be put on trial. As US law does not allow for such trials in most cases, it is preferable that they take place in Germany, Austria, or in the respected suspects’ other countries of origin.”There cannot and there should not be such a thing as legal closure when it comes to genocide, and we support the US authorities in their efforts to track down all suspected Nazi war criminals, no matter what their age is today, and to bring them justice. We owe it to the victims of the Shoah that this effort is pursued relentlessly and with perseverance,” said Lauder.

World Jewish Congress concerned about anti-Semitic agitation in Ukraine, urges restraint

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 21 aprile 2014

NEW YORK – The head of the World Jewish Congress (WJC) on Friday expressed concern about the situation in Ukraine and urged all sides in the conflict there to refrain from using anti-Semitic propaganda to further their political goals. Following the distribution in Donetsk and other towns in eastern Ukraine of an anti-Jewish flyer attributed to a pro-Russian separatist leader in Ukraine, WJC President Ronald S. Lauder condemned the pamphlet and called on all sides to show restraint. “We don’t know yet who instigated this latest affront, but it shows the seriousness of the situation.”Lauder went on to say: “All sides must ensure that any form of anti-Semitism is condemned and fought vigorously. Unfortunately, the Ukrainian Jewish community is caught up in a situation for which it bears no responsibility, and it needs to be protected against unfair attacks, no matter where they may come from.” Lauder added the WJC was closely following events in Ukraine and was in constant contact with the local community.A Ukrainian news agency reported on Wednesday that armed men had handed out a leaflet calling on Jews to register their property with the interim pro-Russian government or face deportation and loss of citizenship. The leaflet, a copy of which was distributed by the ‘Donbass’ news agency, demanded the city’s Jews supply a detailed list of all the property they own, or else have their citizenship revoked, face deportation, and have their assets confiscated. Donetsk, where pro-Russian separatists captured government buildings in the past week, is home to around 17,000 Jews. Reportedly bearing the signature of the pro-Russian separatist leader Denis Pushilin, the flyer was distributed to Jews near the Donetsk synagogue and later in other areas of the city where pro-Russians activists recently declared Donetsk as an ‘Independent People’s Republic’. Pushilin denied any connection to the flyers, calling them a provocation. According to the document Jews would need to supply “ID and passport are required to register your Jewish religion, religious documents of family members, as well as documents establishing the rights to all real estate property that belongs to you, including vehicles.”

WJC President Commends 100 US Universities for Rejecting Israel Boycott

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 3 gennaio 2014

NEW YORK – World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder today commended the 100 US universities that have publicly denounced the American Studies Association (ASA) boycott of Israel.“It is heartening that the leaders of so many great American universities have stepped forward to condemn the ASA’s discriminatory and pernicious assault on Israel and academic freedom,” Lauder said. “This resounding response shows that American society is united in rejecting the Orwellian anti-Semitism that underlies such unfair efforts to single out the Jewish state for opprobrium.”Lauder also thanked the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations for its recent letter urging the university presidents to disassociate their schools from the ASA and to remove any funding designated for the association. Lauder is a former chairman of the Presidents Conference.Under Lauder’s leadership, the WJC last summer launched its Global Campus Initiative (GCI) in order to counter Boycott, Divestment and Sanction (BDS) campaigns and other attempts to delegitmize Israel in university environments around the world. The GCI, a joint project with the European Union of Jewish Students (EUJS) and the World Union of Jewish Students (WUJS), held sessions in Jerusalem on December 30, at which 100 student activists heard speakers and shared knowledge about the best ways to counteract the campus campaigns to vilify the Jewish state. As of January 1, the presidents or chancellors of 100 American universities and colleges, including such prestigious campuses as Harvard, Columbia, Brown, MIT, University of Michigan, and Georgetown, have rejected the ASA boycott. Also opposing the boycott are the Association of American Universities, which represents 62 institutions in America and Canada, and the 48,000 member American Association of University Professors. The ASA, a 5,000-member association of academics who teach American studies, announced the passage of its anti-Israel boycott resolution on December 16.
