EU consumers should enjoy a “right to repair” and enhanced product safety

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 29 ottobre 2020

In a resolution on sustainable Single Market approved by 20 (2 voted against, 23 abstained), MEPs call on the Commission to grant consumers a “right to repair” by making repairs more appealing, systematic, and cost-efficient.They also ask the Commission to consider labelling products and services according to their durability (e.g. a usage meter and clear information on the estimated lifespan of a product). This would support second-hand goods markets and promote more sustainable production practices. To reduce electronic waste, MEPs insist again on a common charger system. To tackle planned obsolescence, restricting practices that intentionally shorten the lifetime of a product should be considered. According to MEPs, the corrective updates for certain digital devices must continue throughout their estimated lifespan and not diminish their performance.According to Eurobarometer, 77% of EU citizens would rather repair their devices than replace them and 79% think that manufacturers should be required to make it easier to repair digital devices or replace their individual parts.MEPs also push for more sustainable public procurement as well as responsible marketing and advertising that encourages sustainable business and consumer choices. This should include clear guidelines for products that claim to be environmentally friendly, assisted by further ecolabel certification. For example, when green claims are made in advertisements, common criteria should be followed to support the claim. In addition, the report proposes new rules for waste management, including the removal of legal obstacles that prevent repair, resale and reuse. This will also benefit the secondary raw material market. In another resolution on product safety in the Single Market, approved by 45 (no abstentions and votes against), MEPs addressed the issue of unsafe products – particularly those sold on online marketplaces. This includes products that contain dangerous chemicals, have unsafe software, or pose other safety hazards.MEPs want online platforms and marketplaces to take proactive measures to tackle misleading practices and demand that EU rules on product safety should be enforced robustly. They emphasise that compliance with product safety rules must be ensured, for products circulating in the EU and manufactured either in the EU or outside it, allowing a fair competition between companies and securing reliable product information for consumers. The resolution also addresses the safety and security of AI (e.g. supporting the development of effective checks on high-risk products embedded with AI), and calls for a revision of the current product safety legislation, such as the General Product Safety Directive and the Machinery Directive, to adapt it to the digitalisation of products.

Transport: Safety and consumer protection must be priority in COVID exit strategies

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 4 maggio 2020

Parliament’s Transport Committee Chair welcomes the new relief measures, but urges EU ministers and the European Commission to better coordinate efforts to exit the crisis. After Wednesday’s videoconference of EU transport ministers and the Commission’s adoption of a relief package for the transport sector, there is still little clarity on the crisis exit strategy and not enough coordination to phase out the confinement measures across the EU.Chair Karima Delli’s (Greens/EFA, FR) statement:
“I welcome the ministers’ commitment to further and constant cooperation as well as the new relief measures tabled by the Commission. At the same time, the EU has to act together and faster. The new proposals tabled by the Commission will provide some relief to the sector. The Parliament stands ready to act swiftly. We will decide on the next steps, possibly including urgency procedure, in the coming days.Following our discussion with Commissioner Vălean and my letter to transport ministers asking for a coordinated European approach, I want to highlight a few vital points on passenger rights, working conditions for transport workers as well as proper protection when relaxing the containment measures. On passenger rights, the Commission guidelines underline that the EU rules on passenger rights should strictly apply. Passengers cannot be doubly victimised by the pandemic, by forcing them to accept vouchers instead of reimbursement. The exceptional derogation in road transport shows drivers’ working conditions worsening: this has to remain a temporary measure and not become the new normal. I do not want truck drivers to be collateral victims of this crisis. The negotiations on the Mobility Package have been very tough, but in the long run we will improve drivers’ working conditions. On relaxation of confinement measures, safety and proper personal protection has to remain our priority. Passengers should wear masks on buses, trains, planes and boats to reduce the spread of virus. When it comes to planes, it would be prudent to consider taking passengers’ temperature before allowing them to board.
In our resolution on EU coordinated action to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences, we call for action to ensure the health, safety and working conditions of transport workers and help transport companies to survive the crisis. It is of utmost importance that we protect our workers, help our companies and ensure passenger safety.”

Blockchain-based Checksome™ to Accelerate Credentialing and Advance Patient Safety

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 22 ottobre 2019

Applied Statistics & Management, Inc. (ASM) introduces Checksome™, a blockchain-based technology, that contains nearly two million primary source verifications that are encrypted and secured by the blockchain. Tildrakizumab confirms its long-term efficacy and safety with the longest

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 13 ottobre 2019

Almirall, S.A. (ALM) announces the presentation of the results of 14 abstracts about efficacy and safety of long-term tildrakizumab treatment at the 28th EADV Congress by Almirall and SUN Pharma to bring the newest data about psoriasis biological therapies. One of the studies, an open-label extension from baseline reSURFACE 1 a phase III clinical trial and shows that, following up to 4 years of treatment with tildrakizumab 100 mg, PASI and PGA response rates are high and durable.1 An extension study from reSURFACE 1 and reSURFACE 2 phase III clinical trials has also been presented showing that there is no dose-dependent tildrakizumab effect on the incidence of malignancy.2 This is the longest data available on an IL23p19 inhibitor, the most innovative class of drugs for the treatment of moderate-to-severe psoriasis. The third study is a pooled analysis through 3 years also from reSURFACE 1 and 2 phase III clinical trials showing that tildrakizumab was well tolerated with low SAEs and adverse effects of a subpopulation of patients 65 years of age or older. Tildrakizumab is a humanized high-affinity anti-IL23p19 monoclonal antibody approved in Europe under the brand name ILUMETRI® for the treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis.3 Due to its specific mechanism of action, it selectively blocks interleukin-23 (IL-23), a key regulatory cytokine, essential in T-helper 17 cell differentiation and survival, which are the cells instrumental in the pathogenesis of psoriasis.

Fraunhofer development for more safety “EUWARN” launched

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 17 settembre 2019

“The safety of our staff and visitors is my top priority. The terrorist attacks in Brussels are but one incident that showed us how vulnerable we are. The EUWARN app is a new internal warning system that enables us to reach our employees in Brussels and Luxembourg, with other locations to follow. It is designed so as to allow other EU institutions to use it in the future,” says Oettinger. The EU Commission’s Security Directorate drafts these warning messages in German, English and French. Unlike the alerts issued via public warning apps, these warnings pertain exclusively to EU Commission venues and will, for the time being, address just EC employees. The system is later to be connected to the public warning system KATWARN, which features a free app now available or slated for rollout in various European countries. “All visitors to EU Commission premises will then receive alerts and notifications via the KATWARN system,” says TURM solutions CEO Neuschwander. From Fraunhofer President Prof. Neugebauer’s vantage point, EUWARN is both a success story and a calling. He believes all research in sunrise industries – security/safety, mobility, energy and environmental protection – has to be persistently European-minded. This is why talks about connecting the Fraunhofer European warning system to many other countries are already underway. According to Neugebauer, “The fact that EUWARN is to launch on a day as rife with symbolism as September 11 is an admonishment for us to pull together to form an even more united international front on security issues. Fraunhofer stands firm beside the EU Commission and the entire European Union as a research partner.” The contracting parties TURM solutions and the EU Commission also see themselves as partners in service of public security in the EU.
The KATWARN system has been available to German security authorities as an SMS since 2011, and since 2012 as a more advanced service delivered via smartphone app. What sets KATWARN technology apart is the precision of its location-based service. It delivers alerts only to affected areas or buildings. Launched in 2017, the KATWARN/Austria warning system is connected to the German KATWARN system. Fraunhofer will continue to upgrade the KATWARN system on behalf of TURM solutions, for example, to disseminate alerts via public ad screens, transportation services’ digital signage and passenger cars’ on-board computers, and adapt these warnings to the new 5G mobile radio standard. TURM solutions GmbH markets KATWARN across Europe and beyond.

IN.PACT AV Access Trial Meets Primary Safety and Effectiveness Endpoints

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 11 settembre 2019

DUBLIN and BARCELONA, Spain, (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) Medtronic plc (NYSE:MDT) announced the first-ever results from the IN.PACT AV Access clinical study comparing the investigational IN.PACT™ AV™ drug-coated balloon (DCB) to percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) in patients with de novo or non-stented restenotic arteriovenous (AV) fistulae lesions. The study met primary safety and effectiveness endpoints and data were presented today at the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe (CIRSE) annual meeting in Barcelona, Spain.“Maintaining patency and limiting the frequency of reinterventions needed to keep AV access sites functioning properly remain significant treatment challenges for physicians treating AV fistulae lesions,” said Andrew Holden, M.D., director of interventional radiology at Auckland Hospital and associate professor of radiology at Auckland University. “These results demonstrate the promise of IN.PACT AV DCB to not only address these critical issues, but to potentially improve the quality of life of patients undergoing dialysis.” AV fistulae, otherwise known as AV access sites, are created and used to deliver hemodialysis to patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Over time, vessel restenosis limits the ability to use AV fistulae effectively. In order to restore function, patients often undergo one to three AV fistula maintenance procedures per year.1 The need for frequent reinterventions can result in significant disruptions to critical hemodialysis care and increased costs to the healthcare system. Drug-coated balloons have the potential to extend the time between reinterventions by maintaining AV access site patency, therefore maximizing a patient’s uninterrupted access to lifesaving dialysis care. The IN.PACT AV Access study is a randomized controlled trial (RCT), which has enrolled 330 subjects at 29 sites in United States, Japan, and New Zealand. The primary effectiveness endpoint was defined as freedom from clinically-driven target lesion revascularization (CD-TLR) or access circuit thrombosis measured through six months post-procedure and the primary safety endpoint was defined as the serious adverse event rate involving the AV Access circuit through 30 days post-procedure. Additional endpoints include but are not limited to: access circuit primary patency, cumulative target lesion revascularizations, and number of interventions required to maintain target lesion patency.

Someone’s Calling You

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 26 agosto 2019

In an age when many people own a phone, many prefer to communicate via text, with Americans sending roughly 26 billion text messages each day.Texting isn’t, however, always the most convenient means of communication. Whether you are jogging, cooking, or driving, dealing with text messages can range between a simple nuisance to a safety hazard.Hands-free technology such as Apple’s AirPods and Google Assistant have offered users great solutions. Users can now send and receive text messages audibly through a headset. Whether in the car or on the run, users can listen to a text read back to them and respond verbally. But too much access to texting can also be a problem. A recent study has found that students, for example, have a much more difficult time focusing in school when their phone is present, even when silenced. In the upcoming iOS 13, Apple has announced solutions with its personalization technologies, which screens contacts and considers whether you are using the headset, such as on a call, to intelligently decide what messages are read aloud. IpVenture is thrilled that the market is adopting their technologies in hands-free texting with headsets and personalization. In addition to considering who is calling or texting, and whether the receiver is busy, our technologies can also consider other factors, such as how urgent the message is. Such comprehensive customization ensures that users never miss out on messages they prioritize while also safeguarding their time from unwanted distractions. With these patented technologies and more, IpVenture is a pioneer in market-driven ideas and user-friendly technologies.

Almirall revalidates its excellence in occupational health and safety, environment and energy management

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 4 luglio 2019

Almirall, S.A. (ALM) has achieved several important international accreditations after an external audit of its integrated corporate management system for occupational health and safety, environment and energy, developed by up to seven auditors from TÜV Rheinland, which carried out field inspections during twelve days at the company’s headquarters in Barcelona, its R&D Centre in Sant Feliu de Llobregat and its chemical and pharmaceutical plants in Sant Andreu de la Barca (Barcelona, Spain).
As a consequence of the audit results, the leading global pharmaceutical company has become one of the first in achieving two of the latest standardized international accreditations, both in its sector and in the whole business network: ISO 45001:2018, for occupational health and safety, and ISO 50001:2018, for energy management.
On the other hand, after obtaining the ISO 14001:2015 adaptation’s certificate in 2018, TÜV Rheinland’s auditors have revalidated the company’s environmental management effectivity. ISO 14001:2015 is the latest actualization of the standard ISO 140001, that Almirall reached in 2004 and is renewed periodically since then.
The process of continuous improvement is consubstantial to quality and excellence, so that the accreditations given by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) collect a broad set of cross-cutting policies, processes and activities that must be implemented in its entirety as part of an integrated management system, and when all this set of initiatives is properly applied, it is possible to quantify significant improvements in a series of predetermined indicators. In the case of occupational health and safety management, Almirall has implemented an occupational risk prevention system that has allowed to achieve a low accident rate, significantly lower than the average for the pharmaceutical sector, both in Almirall headquarters and in its subsidiary Spanish centers. In addition, 16% of the hours of training that the company offers its employees are dedicated to the promotion of occupational health and safety, and wellbeing. On the other hand, the environmental management system has allowed the company to achieve a reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases by 38% between 2014 and 2018, considering the purchase of renewable energies; to reduce the waste by 7% in its chemical plants in 2018, and to reduce the use of methylene chloride by 61% since 2013.

Security at sports events: EP endorses new Council of Europe convention

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 17 marzo 2019

Safety, security and service independent pillarsof the Convention Sports events need to remain peaceful and enjoyable for everyone Clear measures on crowd management and against any discrimination MEPs recommend authorising member states to ratify the Council of Europe convention on safety and security at football matches and other sports events.
The new convention aims at addressing the challenges caused by the great increase in the number of European citizens attending football matches and other sports events in the last decades. The EP recommendation was adopted on Tuesday with 633 votes to 22 and 14 abstentions.MEPs welcome the convention’s “balanced approach” between the three independent pillars in which it is divided, namely safety, security and service. Safety measures are aimed at protecting individuals both on their journey and in the venue of the sports event. Security measures will “deter, prevent and sanction” any violent behaviour related to football matches. Finally, service measures will ensure stadiums and other sports facilities are welcoming for everyone, including children, the elderly and people with disabilities.
All parties to the Convention are required to adopt clear and concrete measures on crowd management and associated safety and security risks. The text underlines the importance of tackling any discriminatory behaviour, including racist, sexist, homophobic and transphobic aggressions. It is necessary to improve diversity in sports and to encourage athletes and clubs to fight discriminations, MEPs say.The new convention updates the 1985 European Convention on Spectator Violence. The number of football matches and sports events has importantly increased since then. EU citizens now travel throughout Europe to support their teams. Public viewing and fan areas have also changed. The EU cannot become party to the Convention and, due to the content of some of its paragraphs, member states will only be able to adopt it if allowed by the EU.The Council can now give green light to EU countries to ratify the Convention on an Integrated Safety, Security and Service Approach at Football Matches and other Sports Events.

GEICO Reminds You Motorcycle Safety is More Than the Month of May

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 28 maggio 2018

GEICO is committed to reinforcing motorcycle safety for long enjoyable rides during Motorcycle Safety Month and all year long. If you are gearing up for the riding season or thinking about becoming a new rider, make sure you are on a properly sized bike for your ability. Controlling your bike with one foot on the ground or the tip of your toes is not the most confidence-inspiring approach. You should be able to comfortably put both feet on the ground when the bike is stopped, reach the control levers and foot controls for better handling of your bike. Motorcycle safety courses and clinics for on- and off-road riding are available for all experience levels. Before you ride, give the bike a quick once-over to ensure everything is working properly. Over- or under-inflated tires cause the bike to handle differently. Tire pressure, throttle operation, clutch and brake adjustment have the most influence on your control and safety. When purchasing riding gear, select proper fitting clothes for the riding position. Loose or poorly fitted clothing may feel better when you’re walking around, but in the event you go down, they will twist and not protect you as designed. Today’s protective clothing often features vents, waterproofing, reflective material and hidden pockets. Make sure your helmet is at least DOT-approved and includes a face shield.A motorcycles’ smaller size makes it harder to see, so always ride defensively, leave your headlight on at all times, signal in advance and always watch for turning vehicles. Pass only in the passing lane and give yourself enough time to brake. Avoid other vehicles’ blind spots. Be aware of road hazards such as potholes, train tracks, oil slicks, road debris and animals. Any of these can be a problem, even for the most experienced rider. For other motorcycle related articles, please visit GEICO More. 6th Annual World Patient Safety, Science & Technology Summit Is SOLD OUT!

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 10 febbraio 2018

Joe KianiThanks to overwhelming demand to hear the latest advances in patient safety, registration for the 6th Annual World Patient Safety, Science and Technology Summit is now closed. In order to make sure that as many people as possible can attend, we have made the Summit available online via live streaming. The entire Patient Safety Movement Foundation team is committed to increasing awareness about the exciting and innovative patient safety developments emanating from the summit. There will be keynote addresses from leading political figures and patient safety experts, plenary sessions with healthcare luminaries, members of the press and patient advocates, as well as announcements from organizations who have made their own commitments to reach the Patient Safety Movement Foundation’s goal of ZERO preventable deaths by 2020.
More than 200,000 U.S. patients and three million worldwide die each year from preventable causes. The Patient Safety Movement Foundation (PSMF) was established through the support of the Masimo Foundation for Ethics, Innovation, and Competition in Healthcare to reduce that number of preventable deaths to zero by 2020 (0X2020). Improving patient safety requires a collaborative effort from all stakeholders, including patients, healthcare providers, medical technology companies, government, employers, and private payers. The PSMF works with all stakeholders to address problems with actionable solutions. The Foundation also convenes the World Patient Safety, Science and Technology Summit bringing together some of the world’s best minds for thought-provoking discussions and new ideas that challenge the status quo. By presenting specific, high-impact solutions to meet patient safety challenges, called Actionable Patient Safety Solutions, encouraging medical technology companies to share the data their products are purchased for, and asking hospitals to make commitments to implement Actionable Patient Safety Solutions, the Patient Safety Movement Foundation is working toward zero preventable deaths by 2020. Mexican doctors safely reuse donated pacemakers after sterilisation

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 3 novembre 2017

Guadalajara MéxicoGuadalajara. Mexican doctors have safely reused donated pacemakers after sterilisation, shows a study presented at the 30th Mexican Congress of Cardiology. The findings create the possibility for patients to receive a pacemaker who otherwise could not afford one.The annual congress of the Mexican Society of Cardiology is being held in Guadalajara, Jalisco from 2 to 5 November 2017. Experts from the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) will present a special programme. “There is no report of the number of pacemaker implants per year in Mexico, but we implant close to 150 new pacemakers per year in our hospital,” said first author Dr Carlos Gutiérrez, a cardiologist at the General Hospital of Mexico “Dr. Eduardo Liceaga” in Mexico City.“According to government reports, more than half of the population in Mexico does not have access to social security or private insurance that covers a pacemaker implant and 44% live in poverty,” he continued.2 “This suggests that many Mexicans cannot afford a pacemaker. Previous studies have shown the safety of reusing pacemakers after sterilisation.” 3–6The current study included 33 patients with a pacing indication who could not afford a new pacemaker or a battery change. Patients received a reused device at the General Hospital of Mexico in 2011 to 2017. Devices had been donated by relatives of deceased patients and had a minimum of six years of battery life. After confirming that the pacemakers were functioning correctly, they were washed with enzymatic soap and sterilised in an autoclave for 38 minutes. Pacemaker function was rechecked after sterilisationPatients were 72 years old on average (the age range was 20 to 106 years) and 52% were female. The indications for a pacemaker were sinus node dysfunction in ten patients (30%) and advanced atrioventricular block in 23 patients (70%).
Of the 33 patients, 25 received a reused pacemaker. Eight patients already had a pacemaker and received a reused generator (battery). During the implant procedure there was one haematoma which resolved without further complications. There were no complications during the six month follow-up period.Dr Gutiérrez said: “This was a small study but it shows that with a thorough and standardised sterilisation process, explanted pacemakers with a battery life of more than six years can be reused safely. This provides an effective option for patients who cannot afford a new device or a replacement battery.”“This practice could be implemented in many other centres that have equipment to sterilise and reprogramme pacemakers,” continued Dr Gutiérrez. “We also need to promote the donation of pacemakers with little use from deceased patients.”Dr Erick Alexanderson, President of the Mexican Society of Cardiology, said: “This study has encouraging results which open up the possibility of pacemaker treatment for many more Mexicans who need it.”Professor Jose Zamorano, course director of the ESC programme in Mexico, said: “Pacemakers are implanted in many patients across the globe every year. This study highlights a practical way to give access to this life-saving treatment to even more patients who need it.”

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 26 ottobre 2017

Safety Vision, LLC, a market leader in mobile surveillance products for law enforcement, is proud to introduce new cameras and recorders that will enhance critical recorded evidence, at the 2017 International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Annual Conference and Exposition. The new ICOP® PRO HD digital video recorder brings high definition recording to the patrol car and other law enforcement vehicles, while integrating with the new Prima Elite body-worn camera. The ICOP PRO HD provides incredible flexibility to law enforcement agencies for their on-vehicle camera selection. Up to four analog high definition (AHD) cameras (and one network IP camera) with recording resolutions up to 1080p are now supported. The new AHD technology delivers high definition video using traditional and familiar analog cables for ease of installation and maintenance. Included with ICOP PRO HD systems is the new AHD low profile windshield camera with 32X optical zoom and automatic digital image stabilizing capabilities. The cabin camera is also enhanced with AHD, delivering sharp recording of subjects in the rear of the vehicle. This new recorder features seamless integration with Safety Vision’s upcoming new body camera, the Prima Elite. Agencies will soon be able to record video from both the vehicle and officer’s own perspective, forming a single visual narrative. The two systems work together with the powerful DVMS PRO video management software. The Prima Elite builds on the enormous success of Safety Vision’s popular Prima Facie® body camera.“We always listen to our customers and we’ve made sure to include their biggest requests in this new system,” says Joe McCleary, Manager of Law Enforcement Sales for Safety Vision. “The new AHD cameras and body camera integration are going to make the officer’s job much easier. License plates, road signs, subject’s faces, objects being thrown from vehicles will be easy to see in these crisp images. The body camera footage is now included and it will all be stored in the same place, making all of it very simple to manage. We implemented these features based on direct input from peace officers that depend on them every day.”Safety Vision is a proud sponsor of IACP and will be in Booth 2959 in the Exposition Hall.
