Newmont’s Tanami Power Project in Australia Completed Safely and on Schedule

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 19 marzo 2019

Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE: NEM) (Newmont or the Company) today announced that the Tanami Power Project in Australia was completed safely and on schedule. The project included the installation of two power stations, a 66kV interconnected power line, and a 275 mile (450km) natural gas pipeline. The pipeline was built and will be maintained by Australian Gas Infrastructure Group, while the power stations were constructed and will be operated by Zenith Energy. Capital costs are estimated at approximately $245 million with annual cash lease payments over a 10-year term beginning in 2019.The successfully completed project is expected to provide the Tanami gold mine a safe and reliable energy source while lowering power costs and carbon emission by 20 percent. The project is expected to generate net cash savings of $34 per ounce from 2019 to 2023, delivering an Internal Rate of Return of greater than 50 percent.“In addition to lowering costs and carbon emissions, the completed Tanami Power Project will pave the way to further extend the life of the operation,” said Gary Goldberg, Chief Executive Officer. “Consistent execution and delivery remain the hallmark of our ability to generate free cash flow and create long-term value for our shareholders and other stakeholders. Completion of the project coincides with Tanami pouring its 10 millionth ounce of gold on the back of record production of 500,000 ounces last year. This achievement is a testament to the skill of our team as well as our valued partnership with the Warlpiri people, the Traditional Owners of the land.”Tanami is Australia’s second largest underground gold mine and one of the most cost competitive gold producers in the world. Newmont’s continued exploration success at Tanami has created the potential to extend mine life beyond 2028, with additional upside through a possible second expansion project that the Company expects to make a full funding decision on in the second half of 2019. Last year, more than 800,000 ounces of gold Resources were converted into Reserves from Tanami’s Auron ore body.Over the last six years, Newmont has successfully built 11 new mines, expansions and projects on four continents – on or ahead of schedule and at or below budget. These projects include Akyem and the Phoenix Copper Leach in 2013, the Turf Vent Shaft in 2015, Merian and Long Canyon in 2016, the Tanami Expansion in 2017, and Twin Underground, Northwest Exodus and Subika Underground in 2018. The Company also completed a value-accretive acquisition of Cripple Creek and Victor in 2015 and delivered a profitable expansion at the mine in 2016.

Security at sports events: EP endorses new Council of Europe convention

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 17 marzo 2019

Safety, security and service independent pillarsof the Convention Sports events need to remain peaceful and enjoyable for everyone Clear measures on crowd management and against any discrimination MEPs recommend authorising member states to ratify the Council of Europe convention on safety and security at football matches and other sports events.
The new convention aims at addressing the challenges caused by the great increase in the number of European citizens attending football matches and other sports events in the last decades. The EP recommendation was adopted on Tuesday with 633 votes to 22 and 14 abstentions.MEPs welcome the convention’s “balanced approach” between the three independent pillars in which it is divided, namely safety, security and service. Safety measures are aimed at protecting individuals both on their journey and in the venue of the sports event. Security measures will “deter, prevent and sanction” any violent behaviour related to football matches. Finally, service measures will ensure stadiums and other sports facilities are welcoming for everyone, including children, the elderly and people with disabilities.
All parties to the Convention are required to adopt clear and concrete measures on crowd management and associated safety and security risks. The text underlines the importance of tackling any discriminatory behaviour, including racist, sexist, homophobic and transphobic aggressions. It is necessary to improve diversity in sports and to encourage athletes and clubs to fight discriminations, MEPs say.The new convention updates the 1985 European Convention on Spectator Violence. The number of football matches and sports events has importantly increased since then. EU citizens now travel throughout Europe to support their teams. Public viewing and fan areas have also changed. The EU cannot become party to the Convention and, due to the content of some of its paragraphs, member states will only be able to adopt it if allowed by the EU.The Council can now give green light to EU countries to ratify the Convention on an Integrated Safety, Security and Service Approach at Football Matches and other Sports Events.

GEICO Reminds You Motorcycle Safety is More Than the Month of May

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 28 maggio 2018

GEICO is committed to reinforcing motorcycle safety for long enjoyable rides during Motorcycle Safety Month and all year long. If you are gearing up for the riding season or thinking about becoming a new rider, make sure you are on a properly sized bike for your ability. Controlling your bike with one foot on the ground or the tip of your toes is not the most confidence-inspiring approach. You should be able to comfortably put both feet on the ground when the bike is stopped, reach the control levers and foot controls for better handling of your bike. Motorcycle safety courses and clinics for on- and off-road riding are available for all experience levels. Before you ride, give the bike a quick once-over to ensure everything is working properly. Over- or under-inflated tires cause the bike to handle differently. Tire pressure, throttle operation, clutch and brake adjustment have the most influence on your control and safety. When purchasing riding gear, select proper fitting clothes for the riding position. Loose or poorly fitted clothing may feel better when you’re walking around, but in the event you go down, they will twist and not protect you as designed. Today’s protective clothing often features vents, waterproofing, reflective material and hidden pockets. Make sure your helmet is at least DOT-approved and includes a face shield.A motorcycles’ smaller size makes it harder to see, so always ride defensively, leave your headlight on at all times, signal in advance and always watch for turning vehicles. Pass only in the passing lane and give yourself enough time to brake. Avoid other vehicles’ blind spots. Be aware of road hazards such as potholes, train tracks, oil slicks, road debris and animals. Any of these can be a problem, even for the most experienced rider. For other motorcycle related articles, please visit GEICO More. Additional safety tips will ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable motorcycle season.GEICO (Government Employees Insurance Company) is a member of the Berkshire Hathaway family of companies and is the second-largest private passenger auto insurance company in the United States. Mexican doctors safely reuse donated pacemakers after sterilisation

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 3 novembre 2017

Guadalajara MéxicoGuadalajara. Mexican doctors have safely reused donated pacemakers after sterilisation, shows a study presented at the 30th Mexican Congress of Cardiology. The findings create the possibility for patients to receive a pacemaker who otherwise could not afford one.The annual congress of the Mexican Society of Cardiology is being held in Guadalajara, Jalisco from 2 to 5 November 2017. Experts from the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) will present a special programme. “There is no report of the number of pacemaker implants per year in Mexico, but we implant close to 150 new pacemakers per year in our hospital,” said first author Dr Carlos Gutiérrez, a cardiologist at the General Hospital of Mexico “Dr. Eduardo Liceaga” in Mexico City.“According to government reports, more than half of the population in Mexico does not have access to social security or private insurance that covers a pacemaker implant and 44% live in poverty,” he continued.2 “This suggests that many Mexicans cannot afford a pacemaker. Previous studies have shown the safety of reusing pacemakers after sterilisation.” 3–6The current study included 33 patients with a pacing indication who could not afford a new pacemaker or a battery change. Patients received a reused device at the General Hospital of Mexico in 2011 to 2017. Devices had been donated by relatives of deceased patients and had a minimum of six years of battery life. After confirming that the pacemakers were functioning correctly, they were washed with enzymatic soap and sterilised in an autoclave for 38 minutes. Pacemaker function was rechecked after sterilisationPatients were 72 years old on average (the age range was 20 to 106 years) and 52% were female. The indications for a pacemaker were sinus node dysfunction in ten patients (30%) and advanced atrioventricular block in 23 patients (70%).
Of the 33 patients, 25 received a reused pacemaker. Eight patients already had a pacemaker and received a reused generator (battery). During the implant procedure there was one haematoma which resolved without further complications. There were no complications during the six month follow-up period.Dr Gutiérrez said: “This was a small study but it shows that with a thorough and standardised sterilisation process, explanted pacemakers with a battery life of more than six years can be reused safely. This provides an effective option for patients who cannot afford a new device or a replacement battery.”“This practice could be implemented in many other centres that have equipment to sterilise and reprogramme pacemakers,” continued Dr Gutiérrez. “We also need to promote the donation of pacemakers with little use from deceased patients.”Dr Erick Alexanderson, President of the Mexican Society of Cardiology, said: “This study has encouraging results which open up the possibility of pacemaker treatment for many more Mexicans who need it.”Professor Jose Zamorano, course director of the ESC programme in Mexico, said: “Pacemakers are implanted in many patients across the globe every year. This study highlights a practical way to give access to this life-saving treatment to even more patients who need it.”

Red Cross alarm over deteriorating situation as thousands are stranded in Greece

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 2 marzo 2016

red crossAthens Thousands of people are stranded in Greece without food, running water and basic supplies as the situation at the country’s northern border spirals into a struggle for survival for migrants desperate to find safety.Up to 8,000 people are stranded in Idomeni on Greece’s northern border with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Almost all are Syrian or Iraqi, and 40 per cent are children. Two overflow camps have been set up to cope with the increasing numbers of people, but they are without running water, sufficient food, baby food, toilets or hygiene items. Violence has also flared at the border crossing as desperation among migrants mounts.“Greece cannot cope with this alone – food supplies have run out at the northern border and the situation is one of despair,” said Simon Missiri, director of Europe for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).At least 30,000 people have been stranded across Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Athens and Idomeni after Austria and countries along the Western Balkan route significantly reduced the number of people allowed to cross their borders last week. Afghans, who were previously able to move onward in search of asylum, are no longer permitted to travel beyond Greece.Mr Missiri said: “The rest of Europe should not pull down the shutters and pretend this isn’t happening. At least 40 per cent of those trapped in Greece are children. For families who have already experienced more trauma and distress than most of us could ever imagine to be put in this position is appalling.”The Greek authorities are working hard to meet basic needs but with no sign the situation will improve and numbers continuing to increase, the IFRC is gravely concerned about the welfare of those stranded. The Hellenic Red Cross is providing emergency supplies and medical care but more support is urgently needed as families travelling with elderly and disabled relatives, babies and young children are spending their tenth day without proper shelter. Missiri said: “Our teams are on the shores of Lesvos, the streets of Athens and the border camps of the north and support thousands of people every day but the erratic policies of countries along the route are making it almost impossible for people to get what they need most – safety, and to be treated with dignity.”The IFRC is running an emergency appeal for 13.1 million Swiss francs to support 200,000 people across Greece and is preparing to mobilize extra staff and stocks to support the Hellenic Red Cross as it responds across the country, as well as in the north. Latvia: Speak up to guarantee safety of EuroPride rally

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 18 giugno 2015

latvia_pol98The Latvian government should break its silence and give a firm commitment to do all within its power to ensure the safety and protection of those participating in this year’s EuroPride in Riga, said Amnesty International today.EuroPride, which celebrates the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people in a different European city every year, will be held in the Latvian capital on Saturday 20 June, at the end of a week-long festival that began on 15 June.
While EuroPride organizers say law enforcement authorities have been very cooperative, the Latvian government has failed to welcome the event. When asked about it last December, Latvian President Andris Berzins stated that “homosexuality should not be advertised and imposed”.“It is disturbing to see the Latvian government’s evident discomfort at hosting EuroPride. Instead of welcoming an event meant to champion openness and tolerance, Latvia’s leaders seem to be turning their backs on it. As the country holding the presidency of the European Union, Latvia should be leading by example in the fight against homophobic discrimination,” said Lucy Freeman, Director of Amnesty International’s Gender, Sexual and Identity Programme.”The sad fact is the majority of Latvian society is against EuroPride and advancing LGBTI rights remains a struggle: same-sex couples are invisible for the government, homophobic hate crimes are not recognised and high-level politicians employ vicious homophobic rhetoric,” said Kaspars Zalitis, a board member of Mozaika, the Latvian group organizing EuroPride 2015.
This year’s EuroPride is the first held in a former Soviet country, a sign of how far LGBTI rights have come in Latvia. In 2005 a national pride march in Riga was marred by violence and hostility, as 70 activists marched for their rights in spite of more than a thousand counter-protesters who tried to block the march, used teargas and threw eggs at the pride marchers.Despite progress on LGBTI rights in the Baltic states and across Europe, the safety and security of pride marches and freedom of expression in general remains under threat in several other former Soviet countries, where homophobic attacks remain a constant threat. On 6 June, the Kyiv Pride was marred by homophobic violence which saw 10 protesters and 11 police officers injured. Amnesty International said the police did not adequately protect the march.Only five former Soviet states have passed legislation prohibiting discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation in employment and only three of them – Georgia, Lithuania and Estonia – have laws on hate crime or incitement to hatred that explicitly include either sexual orientation or gender identity.
Worryingly, Lithuania and Russia have passed laws that restrict the right to freedom of expression of LGBTI activists, when disseminating information and advocating for issues such as equal marriage for same-sex couples. Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan retain laws criminalizing sex between adult men.Amnesty International activists from around the world will join Latvian LGBTI activists at EuroPride.“With homophobic violence a clear and present danger for activists in post-Soviet states, this week’s EuroPride will hopefully send a message that progress is possible and deep-seated discrimination can be uprooted and replaced with tolerance,” said Lucy Freeman.

Migrants: Parliament approves search and rescue rules to prevent deaths at sea

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 21 aprile 2014

african_migrants.jpg.crop_displayNew search and rescue rules to clarify how border guards serving in Frontex sea operations should deal with migrants and where they should disembark them were approved by Parliament on Wednesday. The regulation, already informally agreed by Parliament and Council negotiators, should enter into force before this summer.”These new rules will enable Frontex to respond more effectively and to prevent deaths at sea, thus reconciling our need to ensure security with our duty to protect human rights”, said rapporteur Carlos Coelho (EPP, PT). The draft regulation was approved by 528 votes to 46, with 88 abstentions. The regulation defines “emergency phases” for search and rescue operations and places a clear duty upon units participating in Frontex operations to engage and to save lives. The rules on search and rescue operations and the disembarkation of migrants will only cover operations that are coordinated by Frontex. This should help to dispel confusion created by EU member states’ differing interpretations of international law and practices. The “operational plan” governing Frontex-coordinated border surveillance operations must henceforth include procedures to ensure that persons needing international protection, victims of trafficking in human beings, unaccompanied minors and other vulnerable persons are identified and given appropriate help. Only after migrants are identified may possible coercive measures be taken (the identification rules are mandatory, whereas the enforcement ones are optional). Fundamental rights and non-refoulement principle. MEPs tightened up the text to ensure compliance with the “non-refoulement” principle, which says that individuals must not be returned to any country where there is a risk of persecution, torture or other serious harm. Border guards who consider landing intercepted or rescued people in a third country will have to follow certain procedures (e.g. identification, personal assessment, information on the place of disembarkation, etc).No “pushbacks” at sea or punishment of rescuers”Pushback” operations on the high seas will be forbidden. Border guards may only “warn and order” the vessel not to enter in the territorial waters of a member state. MEPs have also inserted a recital saying that “the shipmaster and crew should not face criminal sanctions for the sole reason of having rescued persons in distress at sea and brought them to a place of safety”.

Misano: secondo posto a Thomas Biagi

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 6 giugno 2011

(biagi)

A4 Mestre-Trieste più sicura grazie al tutor

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 26 aprile 2010

Summit of the Healthy Workplaces Campaign

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 12 novembre 2009

Bilbao, Spain, on 17 November 2009. The importance of risk assessment in the workplace, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises, will be the focus of a high-profile event organised by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) and the Swedish EU Presidency, the summit marks the close of the Healthy Workplaces Campaign on risk assessment, which for the last two years has been promoting practical ways in which workplace risks can be managed and reduced. The event will also include the award ceremony of a pan-European photo competition and presentations of some of our 43 EU campaign partners, giving insight to our first campaign partnership experience, and of the winners of the Good Practice Awards. This scheme recognises organisations that have found innovative ways of keeping European workers safe. Preliminary results will also be made available of the European Survey of Enterprises on New and Emerging Risks (ESENER), a €2.6 million study which provides a unique insight into European organisations, the action they are taking to anticipate and manage the new risks brought about by changing workplaces, and the support they might need in doing so. The Agency has also made a wide range of material freely available, to help organisations (and especially SMEs) carry out risk assessments in a systematic and thorough manner, and so identify the steps that they need to take to keep their employees safe. At the summit, EU-OSHA director, Dr Takala, presents a new Online Risk Assessment Tool with checklists and plans that help to demystify the risk assessment process. This free tool is being developed as a joint project with EU social partners.

To achieve this, between December 2008 and February 2009 over 500 participants from energy ministries, research institutions, companies and NGOs from South America, Africa and Asia were guested by RENAC. In September an on-line teaching platform will be launched and additional in-depth courses will be offered. This transfer of knowledge is already starting to bear fruit. Thus, for example, following his participation in the TREE course, an engineer from an Indian solar-energy company has held several workshops on photovoltaics himself at an engineering institute in his home town of Chennai. A professor at the ‘Universidad de Concepción’ in Chile is currently organizing the installation of several PV modules and solar-thermal collectors on the roof of his university. In the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, exemplary projects for innovative and effective implementation of sustainable education are being commended. The award is conferred by a jury consisting of 12 members of the National Committee, which is convened by the German UNESCO Commission. The UN Decade, instigated in 2002 by the United Nations (UN), has the aim of anchoring the principles of sustainable development in national education systems worldwide. http://www.renac.de, http://www.tree-project.de
