Operation Homefront and Dollar Tree to Make the Holiday Season Brighter for Military Children

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 5 novembre 2019

Operation Homefront, the national nonprofit that serves America’s military families, and Dollar Tree Inc. will once again join forces to make the holidays brighter for our military families with the nonprofit’s annual Holiday Toy Drive. For the 13th consecutive year, Dollar Tree customers can purchase toys for military children, easing the financial burdens that often accompany the holiday season for junior- and mid-grade (E1-E6) service members and their families.
Dollar Tree stores will have collection boxes available at checkout in which shoppers can place their purchased toys through December 5. The toys will be collected by Operation Homefront volunteers and distributed at the nonprofit’s holiday events across the country and through on-base Family Readiness Groups. Making the season brighter for military families is what this partnership is all about, and Dollar Tree and its generous customers have made that joy possible since 2006.

Hundreds of EU staff kick off beach clean season

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 29 marzo 2019

Hundreds of EU staff in Belgium have spent their lazy Sunday on the beach. “What’s new?” you might wonder. Well, they didn’t come for sunbathing, even if the weather was good for it. Nor for taking an early dip into the sea – though swimming in ice cold water is something of a national tradition here (“ijsberen”, or acting like an ice bear). Equipped with gloves, bags, litter picking sticks and a host of 12-starred paraphernalia, officials from the Commission and other institutions came to clean the beach, ahead of the tourist season. To increase the impact, this EU Beach Clean partnered with the Eneco Clean Beach Cup, Belgium’s largest annual beach clean event. And impactful it was. No less than 11.5 tonnes of litter was collected all along the Belgian coastline! Much of it were small items: pieces of fishing net, plastic bottle lids, cigarette butts… But also buoys, car tyres and even an old carpet ended up in the huge, transparent cylinders of the waste collection point, pilloried for all to see before going to the recycler’s at the end of the day.
Belgian Commissioner Marianne Thyssen encouraged the crowd to clean, but first of all to prevent. The EU’s new legislation on single use plastics and lost fishing gear, ready to be adopted by Parliament this week, will help with that. It discourages the production and use of the 10 single-use plastic items most commonly found on EU beaches. Already now, several Belgian beach clubs and bars have committed to ban single use plastic as of this season.
The event in De Haan also kicks off the EU’s beach clean season, which in 2018 covered 65 countries all over the world. Most of these events are planned for September around the World Cleanup Day. Stay tuned!

Passenger numbers increase by 6% on previous season

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 11 gennaio 2017

Abu Dhabi, UAE The cruise sector in Abu Dhabi is celebrating a year of achievement with record numbers of ship calls and passengers arriving in the emirate during the previous season and the successful launch of tAbu Dhabihe Arabian Gulf’s only dedicated cruise beach stopover.
During the season, which runs from October until June, Abu Dhabi received more than 100 ship calls for the first time ever, seven regional rotational callers, which is the highest ever recorded, and welcomed more than 228,000 passengers, making the emirate a firm fixture on the world cruise map.The previous season, Abu Dhabi reported 94 ship calls and 200,000 passengers. Ten years ago just 35,000 passengers and 29 ship arrivals visited the emirate. Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi), which is responsible for developing the industry in the emirate along with its partners, expects annual growth rate to exceed more than 10 per cent following a highly successful 2015-16 season and a strong start to the new season, which will be the longest Abu Dhabi has held.
The rise in projected passenger figures, currently estimated at 250,000 passengers this season, to reach 450,000 by 2020 and 808,000 by 2025, is due to a series of initiatives to encourage the emirate to develop its cruise sector as this has been identified as a primary niche product in the emirate’s economic diversification. Towards the end of 2016, Sir Bani Yas Cruise Beach was opened in the Western Region and is now the Gulf region’s only dedicated desert island cruise stopover, which will attract more than 60,000 passengers in its first season. The official launch coincided with the arrival of the MSC Fantasia, which has made Abu Dhabi Cruise terminal its winter sun home port.
HE Saif Saeed Ghobash, Director General, TCA Abu Dhabi, said: “Our strategic intervention is strengthening the cruise sector’s influence on the tourism economy and contributing to the emirate’s economic diversification. This is now Abu Dhabi’s longest ever cruise season where we will welcome 139 ship calls to Abu Dhabi and 39 to Sir Bani Yas Island.
“This season we welcome the home porting of Celebrity Constellation, MSC Fantasia and AIDA Cruises and have nine regional rotational callers confirmed – which is the highest ever – and expect 10 maiden callers. Together with Abu Dhabi Ports and Etihad Airways we have been actively pursuing opportunities to achieve greater levels of growth through developing long-term partnerships and cooperation which adds more value to the services and facilities we offer.”
In December, TCA Abu Dhabi hosted the Sea Trade Middle East Cruise Forum on Al Maryah Island where senior cruise line executives, tourism authorities, industry stakeholders and global tour operators heard that the Authority and its cruise stakeholders have worked together with leading cruise lines to develop infrastructure, streamline marketing efforts and create a first-class cruise destination.
Crucial to the ongoing success of the cruise sector has been the successful launches of the new Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal in 2015 and the Sir Bani Yas Cruise Beach destination.
Further increases in passenger numbers are expected in upcoming cruise seasons as Abu Dhabi is poised to become the regional hub for ‘Halal Cruising’. TCA Abu Dhabi is working on new initiatives to encourage cruise lines to cater for the needs of Muslim travellers and stimulate regional and home-grown demand.
TCA Abu Dhabi has already partnered with HalalBooking.com – the world’s leading online halal accommodation booking platform – and many local destination management companies are now supporting international operators with halal products.
By improving on shore excursions across the emirate and offering a diverse choice of activities and attractions, cruise partners are hopeful of making Abu Dhabi a not-to-miss destination in the Arabian Gulf for potential passengers choosing their itineraries and holidays while in their home countries.
Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority conserves and promotes the heritage and culture of Abu Dhabi emirate and leverages them in the development of a world-class, sustainable destination of distinction which enriches the lives of visitors and residents alike. The authority manages the emirate’s tourism sector and markets the destination internationally through a wide range of activities aimed at attracting visitors and investment. Its policies, plans and programmes relate to the preservation of heritage and culture, including protecting archaeological and historical sites and to developing museums, including the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. The authority supports intellectual and artistic activities and cultural events to nurture a rich cultural environment and honour the emirate’s heritage. A key authority role is to create synergy in the destination’s development through close co-ordination with its wide-ranging stakeholder base.

Ready, set, go! Eight ladies and 14 gentlemen are prepared to take to the water and determine the season’s best cliff divers

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 17 ottobre 2014

divingThe stages for the final showdown of the 2014 World Series have been set at 20m and 27m at the ‘Blue Cenote’ Ik Kil, a natural phenomenon which looks like an imaginary place with root-covered walls, crystal-clear waters, lush green vegetation and wildlife. The first-ever female World Series champion will be confirmed, as well as the ‘brilliant Brit’ Gary Hunt who will be crowned overall winner after securing the title at the penultimate stop. Competition among the men remains high, particularly for one of the coveted top-five places and a guaranteed spot for next season. After a long season of sensational diving, vital ranking points are still up for grabs and the final showdown on the Yucatán Peninsula will provide cliff diving at its most majestic.“It’s been a wicked year and it’ll be a pleasure to dive in Mexico knowing the title is already secured,” says Gary Hunt (910pts), with a hat-trick of wins to his name already in 2014. Besides the top spot, nothing has yet been determined. Defending champion Artem Silchenko (680pts), from Russia, moved up in the overall rankings from 5th to the position of runner-up by winning the competition in Bilbao, ahead of America’s Steven LoBue (660pts) who is in third place. The season of 85kph dives comes down to the wire and with only the top five of the overall standings qualifying automatically for next year, the fight is tight. England’s Blake Aldridge holds fifth, but Jonathan Paredes is nipping at his heels and is only 10 points behind (540pts), in sixth, before stop number 7 on home soil.In the Women’s World Series, it’s Texan Rachelle Simpson coming to Mexico as the leader of the standings. After two straight wins from 20m, she is 80 points ahead of six-time European cliff diving champion Anna Bader, from Germany. The third spot in the women’s standings is currently shared by Americans Ginger Leigh Huber and Tara Hyer-Tira, as well as Mexican Adriana Jimenez (200pts). As the top-four divers from the first Women’s World Series are automatically qualified for the 2015 series, Cesilie Carlton (180pts), the FINA high diving world champion, is still in the running for automatic qualification. The high diving elite returns to this awe-inspiring cenote close to the archaeological site of Chichen Itza in the heart of the Yucatán Peninsula, where the trophy for the best of the best will be awarded to both the male and female champions. On October 17, at 10am local time, the ladies will compete from 20m, a day later the men’s competition from 27m starts at 11.30am. Who will confirm their place in the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2015?
It’s pure, it’s fast and it takes your breath away. Cliff divers leap aesthetically from almost three times the Olympic height and hit the water at speeds of 85kph, protected only by their concentration, skill and physical control. Since 2009, the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series has featured the biggest talents, the most promising newcomers, and since 2013 has also provided a platform for women. Seven tough competitions for the men, three challenges for the women – in its sixth season this jaw-dropping sport will hit new as well as proven ground in the Caribbean, North and Latin America and Europe between May and October to determine a new champion for both men and women. Maurice Lacroix is the official watch partner of the 2014 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. (diving)

Twelve high divers in glorious isolation

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 8 marzo 2011

The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2011 kicks off 3,500km west of mainland Chile 887 moais spread over 163 square kilometres and 12 high divers on a 27-metre platform – the heavyweights of Rapa Nui will bear witness to the heavyweights of cliff diving at the 2011 World Series’ first competition on Chile’s most westerly point. One of the most remote and mystical places in the world has been chosen as the venue to kick off the third season. On Easter Island during the second weekend in March, Gary Hunt (GBR) will face competition from his hunters – the world’s best cliff divers – for the first time as reigning champion. He was crowned the 2010 winner on Hawaii’s Big Island last September and now Gary Hunt returns to Polynesia to start operation ‘defend your title’ in the first of seven competitions between March and September 2011. The ‘brilliant Brit’ from Southampton took four out of six victories in season II of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series and was already too far ahead in the overall standings when Orlando Duque (COL), the 2009 champion and foremost hunter, eventually picked up his trail. For 2011, the pressure is on the 26-year-old Englishman and not only from nine-time world champion Duque who has announced his intention to reclaim his title, but also Russia’s Artem Silchenko (3rdin 2010) and American Kent De Mond (4th in 2010) who are both in perfect shape. In the farthest reaches of the earth, in the remoteness of Chile’s Rapa Nui, the world’s high diving elite will begin the battle for places. Part of the Polynesian triangle, 3,510 kilometres west of mainland Chile and 4,085km east of Tahiti, the people of Rapa Nui have developed one of the most distinctive of all cultures but are perhaps best known for the legendary moais, monolithic statues measuring up to 10m in height and weighing up to 86 tonnes. The island was declared a National Park by Chile in 1935 and, in 1995, UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site. For its 4,000 inhabitants, it is ‘Te pito o Te Henua’ – the Navel of the World, for the many visitors Easter Island attracts, it is one of the world’s most isolated places. Five flying hours from Santiago de Chile, with only one plane per day arriving from the capital city pay testament to the island’s remoteness. Paying homage to the diverse ethnic culture and beliefs, history and environment, the first ever cliff diving competition to be held on Easter  (ra, easter)
