ABB to Exit Solar Inverter Business

ABB and the Italian company FIMER S.p.A announced today that they have signed an agreement for FIMER to acquire ABB’s solar inverter business. The transaction will enhance the future prospects of the solar inverter business and will enable ABB to focus its business portfolio on other growth markets.ABB’s solar inverter business has approximately 800 employees in more than 30 countries, with manufacturing and R&D sites located in Italy, India and Finland. It includes the solar inverter business from Power-One which was acquired by ABB’s Discrete Automation and Motion division in 2013. The business offers a comprehensive portfolio of products, systems, and services for different types of solar installations. It is currently within ABB’s Electrification business and achieved revenues of approximately $290 million in 2018.Both companies will ensure a smooth transition for customers and employees. FIMER will honor all existing warranties and ABB will compensate FIMER for taking the business and its liabilities over.As a result, ABB expects to take an after-tax non-operational charge of approximately $430 million in the second quarter of 2019 with the half-year results of 2019 being impacted accordingly. Around 75 percent of this charge is represented by cash outflows ABB will pay to FIMER from the deal closing date through 2025. In addition, ABB expects up to $40 million of carve-out related separation costs starting in the second half of 2019.After closing of the transaction, ABB expects the operational EBITA margin for the Electrification business to be impacted positively by slightly more than 50 basis points, supporting the business’ progress towards its target margin corridor of 15-19 percent.Completion is expected in the first quarter of 2020 and will be subject to certain conditions, including the completion of the carve-out and prior consultation with employee representative bodies.

17th Annual Solar Cup

As students from 40 high schools gear up for the 17th annual Solar Cup™, preliminary scores heading into this weekend’s contest show Costa Mesa High leading the pack, with La Puente’s Nogales High and Oxford Academy in Cypress trailing closely behind.Hosted by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, the nation’s largest solar-powered boat competition officially launches Friday (May 17) with boat inspections and qualifying for Saturday’s 90-minute endurance heats and Sunday’s 200-meter sprints at Lake Skinner in the Temecula Valley.While the head-to-head competition officially kicks off Friday, the contest started long before the students even set their boats on the lake. Over the past seven months, teams have been earning points for writing technical reports detailing how they built their boats’ electrical systems and drivetrains, producing a public service announcement promoting water conservation, and passing a technical inspection of their boats. These projects and other requirements represent roughly a third of the total possible points for the Solar Cup competition.In addition to earning high marks for both their technical reports, Costa Mesa High students garnered the most points for their public service announcement. The team’s creative video, developed in partnership with their co-sponsoring agency Mesa Water District, focused on the district’s water conservation efforts and shared effective tips for local residents to reduce their water use.Both Nogales and Oxford high schools also showed strong performances in all preliminary categories, earning second and third place for their PSAs, respectively. Using an effective and energetic narrator, Nogales High shared the benefits of planting California native landscapes, using their own high school campus as a backdrop. Oxford Academy presented information about Orange County’s water sources and California’s recent historic drought conditions to push the public to conserve more water. Metropolitan posted the top five student-produced conservation PSAs on the district’s Twitter account throughout this week.Prior to making qualifying runs Friday, the boats will be inspected and tested by Metropolitan and a technical advisory team from Occidental College to ensure they meet the program’s requirements and are safe and seaworthy. Saturday features two 90-minute endurance heats around a 1.6-kilometer course. The contest continues Sunday with the sprint races, closing with an awards ceremony in the afternoon. The single-seat boats, 16-feet-long, are built from kits of marine-grade plywood provided by Metropolitan. Teams equip them with steering, solar panels, batteries and motors producing up to 320 watts. The maximum weight, including the skipper, is 450 pounds.

Similarly, many other government buildings in the state have decided to go ahead with solar rooftop systems with the per unit electricity cost to be INR 1.67. This has been achievable with the deployment of RESCO programme in the state. The RESCO model facilitates the beneficiary consumer to buy solar power with zero upfront investment and at a tariff much below the prevailing DISCOM rates. Likewise, the government has been coming out with various other schemes, policies and incentives for increasing capacity additions from solar rooftop systems in order to achieve the target of 40 GW by 2022.

GSSG Solar Announces METI Approval for Yamanashi Solar Plant

GSSG Solar, LLC (“GSSG”) announced the METI approval for its 14.7 MW Yamanashi solar plant (the “Project”). This important milestone marks the final approval of the Project’s 20-year feed-in-tariff (“FIT) under which it will sell power to Tokyo EPCO. The Project is the second project developed by GSSG Solar to achieve this important milestone.The Yamanashi Project was developed and built in coordination with the local government and includes a long-term commitment to maintain a dedicated community agricultural farm adjacent to the plant. It is expected that the project will provide clean, renewable solar power to offset the needs of approximately 2,800 local residents.The project was financed by a leading Japanese renewables finance bank and funded using GSSG’s committed pool of capital for Japanese FIT projects. The company has acquired over 350 MWs of projects since it entered the Japanese market in 2014 and continues to actively invest in high-quality projects in Japan. GSSG expects to have 200 MWs of projects under construction by the end of 2019. A subsidiary of GSSG will provide asset management services over the life of the Project.

First Solar to Power Zorlu Enerji’s 100MW Solar Power Plant in Pakistan

(Nasdaq: FSLR) today announced that it is supplying over 860,000 high-performance thin film modules to power a 100 megawatt (MW)AC utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) solar power plant developed by Zorlu Enerji in Pakistan. The Independent Power Producer (IPP) facility, part of the Quaid-e-Azam Solar Park in the country’s Punjab province, is expected to be completed and connected to the electricity grid by the first half of 2018.
When completed, the plant will increase Zorlu Enerji’s installed capacity in the country to 156.4MW, a portfolio that includes a 56.4MW wind farm completed in 2013. The facility will generate an estimated 180 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year – sufficient to power approximately 140,000 average homes – for Pakistan’s Central Power Purchasing Agency, under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).“We are confident that First Solar’s advanced PV modules will thrive in Bahawalpur’s desert conditions, delivering over eight percent more energy than conventional crystalline-silicon panels, and enabling our successful bid for a PPA,” said Sinan Ak, Chief Executive Officer of Zorlu Enerji. “We are also confident that we will set a new benchmark for solar energy in Pakistan, replicating the standards we set with our award-winning Jhimpir wind power plant. There is no doubt in my mind that this project will be a new milestone for the development of utility-scale solar in the country.”

In addition to selling PV modules in these markets, Zorlu Solar is undertaking its own project development activity, powering its successful projects with First Solar technology.“This deal demonstrates Zorlu Group’s ability to enable our sales strategy by expanding First Solar’s installed capacity well beyond our existing markets. It also proves that our high-performance technology and Zorlu Group’s commercial expertise makes for a winning combination in any of the 26 markets covered by our agreement,” Degener added.

First run of AEE-programme with Ethiopian solar enterprises successfully operated

Together with the University of Arba Minch/Ethiopia and the University of Applied Sciences of Neu-Ulm/Germany, the solar enterprise Phaesun which is located in Memmingen/Germany has completed the first run-through of the AEE programme (Applied Education and Entrepreneurship Programme) in December 2014. In the framework of this programme, a new study course has been introduced at the Southern Ethiopian university where students develop solar systems and establish business models in the rural regions together with small local enterprises. Among others, the solar equipment for a hair salon, a mobile phone and lamp charging station, a mobile solar ice cream shop and the equipment for a solar party photographer have been developed. Students of the University of Arba Minch have collected ideas for these systems during a field trip to the remote mountain village of Laka which has no power supply. Subsequently they sized and constructed the systems directed by the German and Ethiopian university lecturers. At the same time, they identified local solar entrepreneurs in cooperation with the local government of Laka and developed business plans. Engidaw Abdel Haile, leader of the solar competence centre at the University of Arba Minch reports: “It is a unique cooperation between international experts, Ethiopian university students and small local enterprises who developed systems perfectly tailored for the users’ requirements. So the mobile solar hair salon e.g. offers its services mainly on market days. The students therefore assembled the solar system and the hairdresser’s equipment on a robust carriage, so the hairdresser is able to push his equipment on a carriage to the market in Laka and the surrounding villages without problems.”The solar enterprise Phaesun, supports this project as an industrial partner with solar components and training courses on the sizing and marketing of solar systems. One reason to participate in this project is the development of BOSS solutions together with the different stakeholders and test them in practice. BOSS in this case, stands for Business Opportunities with Solar Systems and is the name for solar systems that are used for income generation.Tobias Zwirner, Managing Director of Phaesun knows that the existing solar kits are prototypes with room for improvement, however, this is a perfect training ground for all participating parties, as he puts it. „The local entrepreneurs remain in contact with the university for 2 years which corresponds with the amortisation period for the investments made for the solar systems, but also with the term they are supported in case of occurring problems.
So, e.g. the wheels of the carriages had to be changed already since they were not robust enough to carry the weight of the solar batteries. Moreover, the operators in Laka were surprised about problems occurring with the solar system during a long period of rain. So the students realise how important it is to use high quality components and to raise awareness about the chances and limitations of solar energy.” The project already started in December 2013 with an introduction workshop of the participating responsible parties of all partner organisations in Ulm and a first trip to Ethiopia of the German university team to prepare the project.
This was followed by an intensive 8-weeks training phase in Neu-Ulm for eight Ethiopian lecturers. The focus was laid on the conveyance of the physical basics of solar energy, technical training courses of system sizing, development of business plans and the marketing of services. During the summer semester holidays, the Ethiopian students of engineering science, agricultural economics, and business economics could then apply for the interdisciplinary additional study course.
55 students were selected for the first run of the programme. The lectures first took place as intensive block courses in the semester holidays from July 2014 on and later at the weekends during the ongoing semester from October on.In the second part of the course, the students engross what they have started already in the first weeks together with the small local businesses „scaling up“ the business models. The challenge now is „entrepreneurial activity on a larger scale“. One group of students e.g. is planning a workshop for thesolar system manufacture of “solar carriages”. The necessary components can be bought from wholesalers in the capital. Based on the knowledge acquired, the students configure various complete systems such as mobile phone charging stations and offer these to entrepreneurs in regions without connection to the grid. Other students are rather aiming at the solar power supply of private households and do the planning with local service teams. In February 2015 the students get the chance to present their business plans to potential investors at a conference at Arba Minch University.The AEEP Applied Entrepreneurship and Education Programme is a training project supported by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), co-financed with funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). It was initiated by the University of Neu-Ulm, the University of Arba Minch, Sahay Solarverein Afrika e.V., the company Phaesun and further industrial partners in 2013. The project will be lasting for three years until the end of 2016. The study course will take place three times during the project run time with the target to anchor the study course in the curriculum of the University Arba Minch and carry it out independently in the future.

Greenpeace Activists Take Pro-Solar Message to the Temple of the Sun in Machu Picchu as Climate Summit in Lima Begins

Go solar!” onto the hill of Wayna Picchu to mark the beginning of the end of coal- and oil-driven economies. As the UN climate summit gets underway in Lima, Greenpeace is asking decision-makers attending the 20th session of Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to adopt a new course and lead us to 100% renewable energy for all by 2050. The activists, from Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Spain, Austria and Germany, climbed 3000 steep steps along the trail to Machu Picchu in the early hours of the morning under foggy weather conditions. The message was projected in the following six languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, French and Hindi. Greenpeace Head of Climate Politics Martin Kaiser said: The Temple of the Sun in Machu Picchu is where we are announcing to the world that, as the power of the sun is our past, it is also our future. We urge summit attendees to commit to the world’s largest source of energy — the sun — to solve our global climate crisis. The US and China’s recent announcement is a turning point and must spur a global commitment to the ambitious goal of 100% renewable energy for everyone. At COP 20, we call on major emitter countries in particular to table bold commitments for 2025. The whole world is watching – now is the time to act.” The climate summit convenes ministers of 194summit clima countries for the annual Conference of the Parties to negotiate for the next 12 days the legally binding text that will become next year’s Paris Protocol. It will provide an early insight into what we may expect from the agreement with regard to the long-term phase-out of coal-fired power plants, the rate of deployment of renewable energies, and the financial and technological support for the vulnerable and least developed countries. By March 2015, each country must have tabled their national climate targets. Greenpeace believes all countries should present concrete commitments for 2025 to accelerate the transformation towards 100% renewable energy by 2050. These commitments need to be improved every five years to ensure both political accountability and technological development. Greenpeace Climate and Energy campaigner Mauro Fernandez said: “As the hosts of this year’s climate summit, Latin Americans want to share with the world our first-hand experience with the severe impacts of climate change. The global community is awakening and bold action is needed to solve the root cause of our climate crisis. We can no longer delay the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy systems. In particular, it’s essential that Brazil – as the largest economy in the region – commits to ending deforestation by 2020 and significantly reducing its emissions towards 2025. It’s essential that the negotiations in Lima propel us toward a major international agreement in Paris next year.”

High-tech “Made in Berlin” chosen to monitor UK solar farm

solar farmBerlin, Germany, skytron® energy has successfully commissioned its monitoring, control and supervision system installed in one of UK’s largest ground-mounted photovoltaic power plants, the Kencot Hill Solar Farm. The monitoring technology of the Berlin-based company ensures trouble-free operation and enhanced performance of the solar power plant in Oxfordshire. With a total capacity of 37 MWp and an annual power generation of 36 Mio. kWh, the Kencot Hill Solar Farm will provide clean energy for more than 10.000 UK households.
Conergy UK Ltd was responsible for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the plant and is responsible for its ongoing operation and maintenance (O&M). For this Conergy relies on the complete and proven monitoring, control and supervision system of skytron energy. With its modular design, including intelligent combiner boxes for DC distribution, weather condition monitoring and a special on-site server, the system is able to monitor and record all performance characteristics of the plant and store the data in local data loggers.
“Conergy will be handling the management of the Kencot plant as part of our international O&M business, and we were looking for a high-performance monitoring technology. We were attracted both by skytron energy’s precision string current measurement system, and the quality of their components which are built to last”, says Robert Goss, Managing Director of Conergy UK.
Kencot Hill Solar Farm was constructed on a former RAF airfield in only five months. Pre-commissioning and on-site commissioning of the complete monitoring system was carried out by skytron energy’s own commissioning engineers and successfully completed recently.
“At skytron energy we are committed to provide customers with best possible O&M solutions because we know plant owners value high-quality data”, says Stefan Degener, Managing Director of skytron energy. “We are constantly working on improving our technology, so our customers can be ahead of coming changes and developments. First Solar, BELECTRIC to Add 45 Million kWh of Clean Electricity to UK Generation Portfolio

When completed, the facility will produce 45 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean, solar electricity per year; sufficient to power approximately 14,000 average homes or approximately 25% of the estimated 55,400 households in the city of Oxford.
The project is the fourth to be executed in the United Kingdom (UK) under a First Solar and BELECTRIC Joint Venture, announced in 2013. With its recently built solar farms in Wiltshire and East Anglia, the JV is expecting to reach a total capacity of 80MW in the UK. Together, the farms generate almost 80 million kWh of clean energy per year, while displacing an estimated 35,000 tons of greenhouse gasses, each year.“This latest project is a clear indication of the fact that dramatic efficiency gains and increased cost competitiveness have created an undeniable tipping point for solar power, not only in the UK but around the world. Solar electricity for Italy: GP JOULE opens solar park in the Friaul region

san_besso_colle_borra (1)Udine Solar energy made in Reußenköge – the power plant project planners GP JOULE have connected a solar park with a total performance of 26.5 Megawatt up to the grid in the Friaul region in the north of Italy. The park consists of 6 sections which are located near Udine, the capital of the region Friuli Venezia Giulia. The eco-electricity generated in the solar parks secures the supply of 7,300 households.This park is one of three parks which GP JOULE has already built in Italy. GP JOULE intends to expand especially in the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) business all over the South-European area. For this purpose PV systems are installed for industrial, commercial and private customers. The consumer concludes a direct agreement with the producer. Usually, this energy price is much more favorable than that one of the communal energy supplier. Energy prices in Italy rank among the highest ones in Europe. The suppliers increasingly introduce electricity tariffs depending on the time of the day: Thus, during the day, when there is a high demand, the electricity is particularly expensive. Especially in a sunny country like Italy, the installation of PV systems producing electricity at constantly decreasing prices gets more and more attractive.“The expansion of the PPA business helps to put our business on a better, less volatile basis,” explains GP JOULE managing director Ove Petersen. “The objective is to extend our service portfolio by a further important pillar and to make us more independent of the further development in Germany.” The concept of direct marketing is becoming more important in particular in Italy. In the middle of 2012, the new promotion act “Conto Energia V” entered into force, which reduces the energy feed-in tariffs for solar systems significantly. The total amount of aid for photovoltaic is now limited to 6.7 billion Euros. Roof systems receive preferential treatment, ground-mounted systems will get feed-in tariffs only in conversion areas. If the amount of subsidy is used up, the promotion of solar energy production will end for new parks in Italy. Similar to Germany, the feed-in tariff for existing parks is paid for 20 years.

Valentin Software is launching the first simulation programme that can simulate battery systems in grid-parallel operation realistically – PV*SOL advanced 6.0. The new version of the solar thermal programme T*SOL Pro, 5.5, will enable users to easily calculate yields for the use of solar thermal collectors. With the dynamic simulation programme PV*SOL advanced 6.0, users can precisely calculate their own consumption from solar power plants, since the system does not only design photovoltaic power plants, but simulates the storage of electricity in the battery system as well. Unlike the previous programme PV*SOL Pro, the new programme can now import load profiles into resolutions by the quarter hour or even the minute. Furthermore, the programme can calculate the string line losses and issue AC and DC wiring losses per inverter.

Solar Power Installer of the Year Sees Strong Future for Industry

Urgence pour une politique d’hospitalité. Depuis près de 40 ans, le dogme de la fermeture des frontières structure les politiques publiques en matière d’immigration. L’Europe s’est cadenassée face aux migrants, tout en délégitimant toute alternative fondée sur la solidarité et les droits, jugée coupable d’irréalisme et de naïveté. Pour nous, l’état des lieux est sans appel : incapable de répondre aux objectifs qu’elle s’est donnée, cette politique inefficace provoque de surcroit des dégâts humains considérables et met en péril nos libertés. En plaçant les migrants et leurs familles dans un dédale administratif et des conditions de plus en plus inatteignables pour l’obtention d’un titre de séjour stable, ce sont des dizaines de milliers de sans droits que la législation a créés, pour le plus grand profit de secteurs entiers de l’économie française qui peuvent ainsi utiliser une main d’œuvre docile et bon marché. Peu à peu, en matière de santé, de protection sociale, de logement ou de formation, l’exclusion est devenue la règle, le droit l’exception. Et pour ceux qui espéraient encore des conditions de vie différentes de celles qu’ils avaient fuies de leur pays d’origine, les objectifs chiffrés d’expulsion ont signifié un message clair : vivez cachés ou l’expulsion vous attend. Les étrangers auront ainsi, depuis près de 40 ans, subi le sort souhaité à tous par les tenants du dogme libéral : déconstruire les droits pour en revenir au « tous contre tous », baser les rapports humains sur la valeur marchande et la prédation, en finir avec les principes de solidarité, d’égalité, de justice. Construire une société de « sans droits ». Dans le même temps, le poison des vieux démons xénophobes et racistes n’en finit pas de prospérer sur le terreau de la désespérance sociale. La haine de l’étranger ou de l’autre continue plus que jamais à scander le rythme des discours politiques, détournant le regard des citoyens des enjeux autrement plus graves de sous-emploi, d’inégalités sociales et d’injustice fiscale. Dans ce contexte, l’intégration des immigrés est devenue une injonction généralisée, visant à discriminer les étrangers en s’appuyant sur l’argument de « l’assimilation » à de supposées « valeurs communes », qui ne sont que le masque d’un nationalisme d’exclusion.Nous affirmons que notre conception du « vivre ensemble » n’est pas construite sur ces valeurs et qu’elle en est même aux antipodes. À la désespérance et la haine, nous opposons l’urgence d’un nouveau pacte citoyen qui nous rassemble en termes de droits comme d’obligations, quel que soit l’endroit où nous sommes nés. C’est à la réalisation d’une politique d’hospitalité que nous appelons, en France comme en Europe. S’appuyant sur l’égalité des droits, la solidarité et l’ouverture au monde, cette politique doit promouvoir une véritable citoyenneté de résidence, afin d’en finir avec les discriminations légales et d’inventer un droit à la mobilité qui place, au même rang, l’intérêt des migrants et l’impératif des États de garantir la paix et la sécurité. Réalisable, s’appuyant sur des propositions concrètes, cette politique d’hospitalité posera en acte une vision ouverte de l’avenir, considérant les migrants, à l’égal de nous-mêmes, comme des êtres au parcours intelligible, acteurs du monde et parties prenantes de la solution aux défis de notre temps.

Le Solar Impulse

Un avion entièrement propulsé par l’énergie solaire a pris son envol en Suisse la semaine dernière pour ses premiers essais avant un tour du monde sans escale l’année prochaine.  C’est donc ici un vrai symbole d’une solution au changement climatique qui prend son envol : on a utilisé des solutions existantes pour le faire décoller et on a dû inventer de nouveaux produits pour compenser l’inévitable absence de lumière lors de son futur grand périple exempt d’émissions de gaz à effet de serre.  Si l’on veut limiter ces émissions aux normes prévues par les climatologues, il conviendra de suivre cette approche : appliquer les bonnes solutions et en trouver d’autres car ça chauffe au quotidien. C’est un peu l’exemple de la Formule 1 qui développe de la très haute technologie, celle-ci étant après à la base d’innovations pour les voitures de tout un chacun. Pour cette raison, le Solar impulse, et avec lui l’énergie solaire, ont été choisis pour figurer en bonne place dans le livre de Robert Kandel, Faire Face au Changement climatique.

In Brazil, the chemical industry as well as most automobiles use ethanol derived from renewable sugar cane. In Europe and other industrialized countries, some of the electric power consumed by industry comes from nuclear or hydroelectric installations. With continuing investment in research, the chemical industry is expected to come up with important new contributions in the future, for example organic solar cells, especially if demand for renewable energy production is effectively encouraged without however leading to higher prices. Centrale elettrica fotovoltaica (PV)

Nanchino (Cina)  ET Solar Group Corp. (“ET Solar”), un fornitore di soluzioni chiavi in mano per sistemi fotovoltaici (“PV”), nonché produttore integrato di prodotti PV, con sede a Nanchino, ha annunciato il completamento ed il collegamento alla griglia di una centrale elettrica PV da 1.48MW montata a terra, dove la ET Solar ha operato come appaltatore EPC.  Il team di tecnici tedeschi della ET Solar ha approntato l’intero design del progetto, utilizzando moduli PV forniti dallo stabilimento cinese della ET Solar. Da una valutazione fatta da un’agenzia di consulenza indipendente tedesca, l’efficienza progettata dell’impianto è di quasi l’82%.  Il progetto si trova nella regione di Paehl, a circa 50 chilometri a sud di Monaco. II lavoro principale della costruzione è iniziato verso la fine di novembre 2009, e il collegamento alla griglia è stato fatto a metà dicembre dello stesso anno alla E. ON, il più grande operatore di griglia in Germania.  L’impianto ha una durata utile progettata di 30 anni, ed è prevista generare circa 32 milioni di kWh di elettricità nel periodo sovvenzionato di 20 anni per ridurre quasi 20.000 tonnellate di emissioni di carbonio.
Wattner AG (“Wattner”), un fondo comune d’investimento con sede a Colonia, specializzato in investimenti in energie rinnovabili, è l’unico investitore azionario del progetto, tramite il proprio fondo SunAsset con raccolta pubblica di capitale. Il finanziamento del progetto è stato fornito da un consorzio di due casse di risparmio regionali tedesche.
ET Solar è un produttore di attrezzature ad energia solare e fornitore di soluzioni chiavi in mano, con un’organizzazione ad integrazione verticale. Con le vendite locali, le succursali e le sedi in Asia, Europa e Nord America, ET Solar ha fornito moduli solari, sistemi di tracciabilità e servizi con soluzioni chiavi in mano ai suoi clienti in più di 40 paesi.
Wattner struttura progetti dal punto di vista finanziario, raccoglie capitali azionari e obbligazionari per progetti, prepara il finanziamento preliminare e si occupa del controllo del progetto durante le fasi di realizzazione e operatività del progetto. Le società completamente controllate dalla Wattner sono la Wattner Connect GmbH e la Wattner Projektentwicklungsgesellschaft mbH.
