The Corona Chronicles: Space, Time, Gravity

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 27 aprile 2020

Not to worry – I will not attempt to explain Einstein’s theories in this week’s email. In fact, over the years, I have spent too much time trying to understand them and devoted too much bookshelf space to numerous volumes on the subject, from Einstein’s own book on Relativity to “Einstein for Dummies.” My inability to thoroughly comprehend, much less remember, the theories’ elucidations has exerted an overwhelming gravitational drag on my intellectual self-confidence. Imagining all those trains or elevators traveling at or near the speed of light, and failing to understand how time and space can become distorted and sag under gravity’s influence, deeply upsets my sense of relative equilibrium.Well, then, relatively speaking, how have these last weeks been going? Relative to what and to whom? Am I better off living in NYC than in the Grand Tetons? Is it better working to keep my business afloat or should I use this time for self-improvement (like finally trying to grasp General and Special Relativity, not to mention the elusive Unified Field Theory)? One thing is certain, I am not bored. Once upon a time, time was interrupted by brief, diverse intervals of activity in a variety of spaces. Now, events easily slide from one into the other and space is confined, essentially, to our apartment or the walk my wife and I take every day up and down First Avenue. Wake up, shower, dress, eat, walk, work, eat, work, cocktails, dinner, TV, sleep…wake up, shower, dress, eat, walk, work, eat, work, cocktails, dinner, TV, sleep. Sometimes we invite Governor Cuomo into our living room for drinks and an update. But even his press conferences have become, well, kind of routine. Oh, for some variety!A couple of weeks ago, I got into my car, dropped the top, drove up First Avenue and back home down Fifth. Along the way, I finally did something I’ve been wanting to do for years: I put on Beethoven’s Fifth, turned up the volume, and took revenge on all those thoughtless people blasting noise out of their boom-box cars next to me in heavy traffic. It felt liberating (and a bit selfish), but wearing my black face mask and white latex gloves was, well, kind of cool! And the best part was that time flew by in my car’s safe and relaxing space. As I was driving something less than 186,000 miles per second, there was no danger of entering a time or space warp.
Please don’t misunderstand or judge me. I am fully aware of the pleasure of work, even if business is a struggle; the reliability of a schedule, even if it is lackluster; the good fortune still to have some money in the bank, although it is dwindling; happy not to be sick, though sickened by those who are suffering, having groceries delivered instead of going out food shopping — all these, and many more, are blessings. I take nothing for granted. I am lucky to love and be loved. I am lucky to be alive. And I remain hopeful that when all this is over, the world will have shrunk into a smaller space; that time will no longer feel as if the pandemic had stopped it, and that the gravitational force that binds us together, will invisibly, yet inexorably, draw us even closer together. Big Ideas for Small Kitchens by Kutchenhaus

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 18 Maggio 2012

London,(PRNewswire)No room is too small for a fabulous kitchen all it needs is some cleverly thought through Kitchen ideas to ensure every corner of the room is used, whilst still looking great.Take a look at our top ten tips on how to make a big kitchen impression in your small space.
1. The most important thing in any small space that requires a kitchen is to ensure a top kitchen designer looks at the room dimensions first. They will then add in important things like window and door locations, plug sockets and water and boiler points. All these items will determine what space you have and how much needs changing. If you have a strict budget, then getting the design right is crucial if you want to avoid putting errors right later on.
2. Any good kitchen designer will also think through the different ways you will use your kitchen and how to avoid the usual kitchen blunders. We see the same problems time and again, like doors not opening properly, units which don’t fit, even drawers not fully opening simply due to bad kitchen design. -Get a good designer who you can trust and ensure you think about what you want.
3. Try to choose a kitchen which is light and bright and ideally has a reflection. With the combination of clever lighting, glass and mirrors, you can make the room seem much more spacious by choosing a pantone which works with the space. We always recommend gloss or high gloss in creams and ivory, as they work in small spaces and always create the wow factor.
4. Try to avoid clashing colours and too much pattern as these generally work best in larger rooms which can cope with bold design. You don’t want the room to have too many different colours or points of focus. Instead choose something practical and let the accessories do the talking.
5. Storage should be top of the list when it comes to making a small kitchen space work. Maxi height base units, which are available at Kutchenhaus Kitchens at no extra cost, increase storage by up to 20%. Combine this across all the units in the kitchen design and it can make quite a difference.
6. The general kitchen unit height in the UK today is 720mm; however you can get up to 900mm at some kitchen retailers, without having to pay out a fortune. Always ask about the heights of units and if they come at a standard height, if they do, then shop around. Remember that ‘standard’ isn’t always the cheapest option and it can in-fact suite a small space much better if you can customise your worktop heights accordingly.
7. Always opt to reduce the plinth in small kitchens to avoid wasted space. Again, any reputable retailer will offer you this, so shop around.
8. Appliances have come a long way over the last ten years and any small kitchen has more than its fair share of affordable, high quality appliances available which can really enhance the space. Look into options like the Neff oven with a slide away door, for those who don’t have the room for a conventional oven door for example. Speak to your designer for more options.
9. If you have always longed for an island in your kitchen but don’t have the space, right it down on your kitchen wish list and speak to your designer. You may be able to have a breakfast bar, or even a pull out table solution which means you can have a separate eating, working area, even in a small kitchen.
10. Lastly, list your priorities and those items you would like to have. Also think about your current kitchen, if you have one and what really annoys you about the space. That way when you get your new kitchen design, you can go through the lists and tick off everything step by step and make the right kitchen compromises if necessary.
To see how you can save space in your kitchen have a look at some real kitchen designs that we produced for Kutchenhaus customers – you may find some design inspiration too!

Military and space applications at SPIE DSS 2012

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 26 aprile 2012

Châtenay-Malabry (near Paris), France, Sofradir, the number one developer and manufacturer of a key class of infrared detectors for military, space and industrial applications, announces today that it will demonstrate a prototype of the first 10-micron pixel pitch infrared (IR) detector for tactical applications at SPIE DSS in Baltimore, April 23 – 27. The image quality of an infrared detector depends on its spatial resolution that is related to the size and number of pixels. This means the higher the number of pixels and the smaller the pixel size, the sharper the image. In regards to the 10-micron pixel pitch, the small pitch means that Sofradir can double the number of pixels on a standard size chip. With this significant increase in image resolution, fighter pilots and soldiers will be considerably more effective in distinguishing between small objects at long distances (up to ten km) during the day and night, and through fog and smoke. Targeted military applications of Sofradir’s 10-micron pixel pitch IR detector will include Infrared Search and Track Systems (IRST), targeting and reconnaissance pods, long-range surveillance and armored vehicles. The focal plane array prototype was developed with the support of DGA (Direction Générale de l’Armement) by CEA-Leti at DEFIR, the joint laboratory of Sofradir and CEA-Leti. CEA-Leti is a leading European microtechnology, IT and health technology research center. Sofradir credits its Mercury Cadmium Telluride (MCT/HgCdTe), a cooled IR technology using a silicon-like photodiode implantation process, for enabling the development of the 10-micron pixel pitch IR detector.
MCT is extremely effective at controlling pixel diodes. Moreover, Sofradir’s indium bump positioning process (the bumps are connection pads that join the detection circuit and the read out integrated circuit together) is very accurate. This level of control offers Sofradir two options: It can fit more pixels on the IR chips currently in use and therefore further enhance image resolution or develop smaller IR chips for overall IR system cost-savings.
Sofradir develops and manufactures advanced infrared (IR) detectors for military, space and commercial applications. It specializes in cooled IR detectors based on a sophisticated high performance technology, Mercury Cadmium Telluride (MCT), for which it has the market lead. Its vast product portfolio of scanning and staring arrays covers the entire infrared spectrum. Sofradir also offers QWIP detectors developed in cooperation with Thales.
CEA-Leti is a leading French research-and-technology organization with activities in energy, IT, healthcare, defense and security. CEA-Leti is focused on creating value and innovation through technology transfer to its industrial partners. It specializes in nanotechnologies and their applications, from wireless devices and systems to biology, healthcare and photonics. NEMS and MEMS are at the core of its activities. An anchor of the MINATEC campus, CEA-Leti operates 8,000 square metres of state-of-the-art clean room space on 200mm and 300mm wafer platforms. It employs 1,400 scientists and engineers and hosts more than 190 Ph.D. students and 200 associates from partner companies. CEA-Leti owns more than 1,700 patent families. For more information, visit

Elina Brotherus: Films, videos & photographs

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 23 luglio 2010

London at 65a Hopton Street, SE1 9LR 16 September – 23 October 2010 and is open Tuesday – Saturday 10.00-18.00 hrs and on Monday by appointment only. Closed Sunday. Established by Jules Wright, the founder and creative director of the award-winning Wapping Project in East London, the Wapping Project – Bankside is a new commercial gallery space dedicated to championing photography and film. Artists represented include: Susan Meiselas, Deborah Turbeville, Lillian Bassman, Peter Marlow and Elina Brotherus.
Widely known in the UK as a photographer, the youngest to have been shortlisted for the former Citi Bank prize, Elina Brotherus has been a prolific film maker since her earliest work, Lesson (1998). Working on video, film and recently H.D. her film work has been collected internationally and is held by the Arken Museum of Modern Art, Ishoj, Denmark, Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki, the Koc Foundation Istanbul and in Stockholm, Barcelona and Alsace (full bibliography below). Two films have been seen in the UK, the triptychs Spring and Baigneurs, both at The Wapping Project in 2001 and 2003 respectively. Brotherus captures the Finnish and French landscapes and the landscape of the body in films which, almost without exception, eschew narrative. They capture instead a leisurely sense of the passage and movement of time, the seasons and the temporal quality of life. Framed with the same sense of repose and stillness reminiscent of her finest photographs, figures wander in and out of her landscapes, walking in and out of the frame. The camera is almost always held in a fixed position and in this sense her work owes something to the French nouvelle vague, in particular Alain Renais. The constrained camera movement lends the work a lightness of touch, an unhurried and restful quality as Brotherus measures and appraises life unfolding in front of her lens. The Wapping Project – Bankside will present ten works, including the triptychs Spring and Baigneurs. Curator for Sadlers Wells, Co-curator for Bloomberg Space and the Chair of New Contemporaries.
Elina Brotherus Born in 1972, Helsinki, Finland. Lives and works in Finland and France. (image 02)

Expo: A Momentary Fantasy

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 25 aprile 2009

fantasyNew York Scaramouche c/o Fruit and Flower Deli  53 Stanton St. Expanding on Daniel Defert’s observation that philosopher Michel Foucault -evoked the parent’s bed as the first figure of heterotopia, the place that children love to penetrate for the pleasure of transgression and the reverie of origins,- -A Momentary Fantasy- considers the home as a network of counter-sites: spaces for crises and transitions. Through site-specific installation, performance, and interdisciplinary work, the artists Natalie Beall, Jonathan Van Dyke, Carla Edwards, Jessica Segall, and Jeremy Wagner abstract the home-Beall industrializes domestic decoration by turning escutcheons into a ceiling trim of non-functioning vents; Van Dyke constructs a small closet with a translucent door dribbling paint from its absent doorknob; Edwards coils branches with pink string, and stacks them in a transparent wood grate as if in a fireplace, and she further plays with tropes of -home- by quilting a cross of American flags died black; Segall composes live and projected narrative songs, duets, and scenes enacted in the rooms of a house; with rust, Wagner etches the imagery of an elaborate chandelier into a metal sheet.  Described as an effective utopic space, a place reformatting social conventions, Foucault defined a heterotopia as -elsewhere- and -other–marginalized, peripheral, isolated yet also open. Adopting domestic crafts, objects, symbols, and spaces to orient them as mythological constructs, -A Momentary Fantasy- presents a psychological scenario, a liminal space between decoration and utility, real and surreal, placed and placeless. It considers the home a heterotopic fantasy-a momentary one, disillusioning. (image fantasy)
