Sweden commits funds to IFAD to help avert COVID-19 food crisis

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 13 settembre 2020

Sweden, through the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), has pledged funds to help avert a potential food crisis in some of the world’s most vulnerable rural communities in the wake of COVID-19, the UN’s International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) announced. SEK 50 million (approximately US$5.7 million) will be committed to IFAD’s Rural Poor Stimulus Facility which was launched in April by IFAD’s Goodwill Ambassadors, Idris and Sabrina Elba. The Facility is supporting small-scale farmers and rural producers to continue to grow and sell food despite COVID-19 restrictions in movement and trade, by providing timely access to agricultural inputs, information, markets and liquidity. Sweden also committed SEK 40 million (approximately $4.6 million) to IFAD’s Financing Facility for Remittances. This will help maximize the impact of remittances and diaspora investment on rural development, accelerate the transformation of remittance markets through new technologies, and promote financial inclusion so that families receiving remittances use their funds productively.Remittance flows, often a lifeline for rural families in the developing world, are projected to decline by about 20 percent this year due to migrant workers’ loss of employment worldwide, and reduced access to transfer operators caused by the COVID-19 restrictions. About 80 percent of the world’s poorest and most food-insecure people live in rural areas. Around 135 million people were recently categorised as facing acute food insecurity and malnutrition. It is estimated that this number could nearly double before the end of the year due to the impacts of COVID-19. Movement restrictions to prevent the spread of the virus left many small-scale producers without access markets to sell produce or to buy seeds or fertilizer. Transport and border closures adversely affected rural areas and disrupted food systems. The most vulnerable include daily labourers, small businesses and informal workers, mostly women and young people. Sweden is a founding member of IFAD and is one of the 36 members of IFAD’s Executive Board. It has committed more than $471 million to the Fund. With a specific focus on helping small-scale farmers adapt to climate change, Sweden has contributed substantially to building the resilience of more 30 million rural people.

Amazon Web Services Launches New Region in Sweden

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 14 dicembre 2018

Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), an Amazon.com company (NASDAQ:AMZN), today announced the opening of the AWS Europe (Stockholm) Region. With this launch, AWS now provides 60 Availability Zones across 20 infrastructure regions globally, with another 12 Availability Zones and four regions in Bahrain, Hong Kong SAR, Italy, and South Africa all coming online by the first half of 2020. The AWS Europe (Stockholm) Region is AWS’s fifth in Europe, joining existing regions in France, Germany, Ireland, and the UK. Tens of thousands of customers across the Nordics – Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden – already use AWS. Starting today, developers, startups, and enterprises, as well as government, education, and non-profit organizations can leverage the new AWS Europe (Stockholm) Region to run their applications in Sweden, serve end-users across the Nordics with lower latency, and leverage advanced technologies such as analytics, database, mobile services, serverless, and more, to drive innovation. Customers can get started today at: https://aws.amazon.com/local/nordics/“Since the early days of AWS, Nordic organizations have been using AWS’s cloud technologies to help reinvent entire industries, such as Supercell and Rovio in gaming, Scania and Volvo in automotive, and Nokia and Telenor in telecommunications,” said Andy Jassy, Chief Executive Officer, Amazon Web Services. “Tens of thousands of Nordic customers have been using AWS from regions around the world, but many have shared that they also wanted an AWS Region in the Nordics so they can easily operate their most latency-sensitive workloads for end-users in the Nordics while meeting any data sovereignty requirements. We’re excited to deliver our AWS Stockholm Region today to meet these customer requests.”The AWS Europe (Stockholm) Region offers three Availability Zones at launch. AWS Regions are comprised of Availability Zones, which are technology infrastructure in separate and distinct geographic locations with enough distance to significantly reduce the risk of a single event impacting business continuity, yet near enough to provide low latency for high availability applications. Each Availability Zone has independent power, cooling, and physical security and are connected via redundant, ultra-low-latency networks. AWS customers focused on high availability can design their applications to run in multiple Availability Zones to achieve even greater fault-tolerance. Additionally, local AWS customers with data residency requirements can now store their content in Sweden with the assurance that their content will not move without consent, while customers building applications that comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) now have access to another secure AWS infrastructure region in the European Union (EU) that meets the highest levels of security, compliance, and data protection.

So the recession was not so bad after all

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 18 ottobre 2014

European CommissionAs the world economy hovers close to another growth crisis, European statisticians have quietly admitted that the last recession was not quite as bad as they made us believe. The European Commission’s statistical agency has just released revised economic growth figures for the period 1997-2013  Whilst they try to play down the overall impact of the changes, the detailed country data for recent years makes much more dramatic reading. Due to new ways that the capitalization of research and development is treated in the figures and various “statistical improvements”, the collapse of the economies of Cyprus and Netherlands in 2010 now appear to have been severely overblown. The new figures raise the 2010 GDP figures by 9.5% for Cyprus and 7.6% for the Netherlands.
Other countries affected by these changes are Sweden (+5.5%), Finland (+4.7%) and the Czech Republic (+4.3%). In all other EU countries except Latvia the changes had a positive effect upon GDP. Commenting on these revisions today, Robin Chater – Secretary-General of The Federation of International Employers (who is himself a professional statistician) – said:“ We have always known that GDP figures have been vulnerable to such substantial revisions. That is why it is so dangerous to look at current statistics and draw too many conclusions from them. This is, however, a significant embarrassment for the European Commission as it will be fully aware that all players in the EU economy have relied so much upon their data as a basis for purchasing and investment decisions. Now to be told that the recession was not quite so dramatic after all will make many companies very angry – especially in the finance sector. “The Federation is currently compiling new figures to create improved estimates for the global economy, prices and remuneration. These will make it much easier to assess the overall movement of economic cycles as they occur. ends/

The extreme right has hijacked Finland’s national symbols

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 26 settembre 2014

The same is also happening elsewhere in Europe. Now a new national identity is being designed for Finland by the neighbouring country Sweden. This goodwill initiative for a more open and positive Finland is called “Finland Redesign”. One of Sweden’s most influential designers Henrik Nygren is working on a new identity, which will be revealed in December at Eurobest, Europe’s biggest festival of creativity. Though Finland is just a small nation in the Nordics, good news are written about it every day. The Finnish education system is one of the best in the world, Finland is one of the world’s least corruptedcountries and the best place to become a mother. New innovations and scientific
discoveries are continuously created there – not to mention that Finland is home to some of the world’s most interesting new startups such as Rovio and Supercell. But Finland is facing the same problems as many other countries in Europe. It is hard for a normal citizen to show national pride as the right wing has hijacked the national symbols. This is the reason for the goodwill initiative “Finland Redesign”, started by Finnish creative agency Bob the Robot.“We wanted to create something concrete using creativity and design. So we decided to create a completely new identity for our nation – symbolizing a more open and positive Finland. That is why we needed a completely new perspective. So we turned to Sweden, our neighbours, who we strongly love and hate”, says Miska Rajasuo, CEO of Bob the Robot. How would you feel if your country’s new national identity was designed by your neighbours? What would happen in Germany if France would design their new
national identity? Or what about Canada designing a new one for USA? This has finlandnever been done before, so the whole project is way out of the box. After a long search, a perfect designer was found. Henrik Nygren, who is undertaking
the feat of redesigning the identity of Finland, is one of the most influential designers in Sweden. During the course of his career of over 30 years, he has designed stamps for a king, won the most prestigious design prize in Sweden, the Platinum Egg, and influenced the Swedish graphic design scene as an educator. His work has also been exhibited around the world from Stockholm to Tokyo. But this is the first time for Nygren to design an identity for a whole nation: “It is interesting in this profession how all projects are in a way the same. Big or small, close or far, they all need the same focus and hard work to be believable, stand out and tell a story. This project for Finland is no exception”, Nygren comments. The new national identity of Finland, designed in Sweden, will be presented during Europe’s biggest festival of creativity, Eurobest, in Helsinki in the beginning of December. The new identity will be freely available to use for any Finnish person or organization.

Stenkullen, Sweden, (PRNewswire) In order to make it easier for a driver seated in a wheelchair, the Turny Evo swivels the car seat out of the car and lowers it to the height of the wheelchair. The user transfers to the car seat by sliding over and is comfortably lifted into the car by the Turny Evo. After a successful year with the passenger side solution a driver side version of the Turny Evo is now shown during the 82nd International Motor Show in Geneva. The streamline design of cars today have made more harm than good for those who have trouble getting in and out of the car. The tight design leaves very little room to swivel a seat out of the car, an issue the design engineers at Autoadapt solved with a unique customizable path of movement. This makes it possible to make optimum use of the space in the doorway and creates more room for the user. Furthermore it means that every installation is tailored to user and vehicle, which gives the user the positive effect to be able to choose from more car models than previously possible. The Turny Evo solution is universal and crash tested and approved for installation between the floor and seat of the car. A Range Rover Evoque with a driver side installation of the Turny Evo will be available for viewing at the International Motor Show in Geneva 8-18 of March 2012, at Autoadapt’s Swiss dealer Haueter, hall 6 stand 6258. Turny Evo is developed and produced by the Swedish company Autoadapt. All Autoadapt products are distributed via the company’s worldwide network of trained and authorised dealers.
Autoadapt was founded in 1996 and has since grown to one of the world’s leading manufacturers of car adaptation solutions for people with reduced or limited mobility. The company offers a wide range of award-winning and safety tested solutions for adapting vehicles for increased accessibility. The Turny seat lift and Carony wheelchair system are innovative products that eliminate the need for lifting a person into or out of the vehicle, making the disabled and elderly user more independent.
