Switzerland Tops World Ranking of Business Talent

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 23 novembre 2015

losannaLAUSANNE, Switzerland, The country which often gets its reputation through the commercial successes of watches, cheese and chocolate has been named the best in the world for business talent, a position that shows there’s a lot more going on throughout its industries. Switzerland leads the way in developing, attracting and retaining talent to satisfy corporate needs, according to a study by leading global business school IMD.The research ranks Denmark second and Luxembourg third, with Norway, the Netherlands, Finland, Germany, Canada, Belgium and Singapore completing the top 10.A host of major economies fare less impressively, with the US languishing in 14th place, the UK 21st, France 27th and mainland China way down the list in 40th position.Professor Arturo Bris, Director of IMD’s World Competitiveness Center, which carried out the study, said: “Pure economic power and talent don’t always go hand-in-hand.”The key attribute among all the countries that rank highly in our standings is agility, as shown in their capacity to shape policies that preserve their talent pipeline.”In this regard none is more agile than Switzerland, which has shown itself to be the most talent-competitive country in the world for nine of the past 10 years.”Other countries, many of the world’s leading economic powers among them, could learn valuable lessons from understanding how the Swiss manage their talent pool.”The findings are contained in IMD’s World Talent Report, an annual assessment of how countries sustain talent for the businesses operating within their economies.Rankings are based on 20 years’ worth of competitiveness-related data, including an in-depth survey of more than 4,000 executives in the 61 countries covered by the study. The research focuses on three main categories – investment/development, appeal and readiness – which in turn are derived from a much broader range of factors. These include education, apprenticeship, employee training, brain-drain, cost of living, worker motivation, quality of life, language skills, remuneration and tax rates. The main categories are aggregated into a yearly overall ranking. In addition, each country’s evolution in the various aspects is assessed over the course of a decade – in this instance from 2005 to 2015 – to identify the most talent-competitive countries.
Other than in 2006, when Austria took top spot before slipping back into the chasing pack, Switzerland came first overall in every year of the period examined. Its pre-eminence conclusively overturns long-held popular notions that the country’s business acumen is limited to just a handful of specialist niche markets.Professor Bris, an expert in finance and in the field of global competitiveness, said: “Switzerland has shown itself to be a leading performer right across our range of factors.”The fact is that it has consistently achieved a positive balance between encouraging local talent and tapping into top talent from other countries.”This is a quality all the high-ranking economies have to some extent, but only the best constantly update and refine the required competencies to truly sustain their talent pipeline.”Overall, the research suggests Northern Europe boasts the greatest concentration of business talent hotspots in the world.Singapore supplanted Malaysia as the Southeast Asian economy best equipped to develop, attract and retain talent, with Hong Kong also performing well.
But in Latin America even Brazil, the region’s most powerful economy, was found to have suffered deterioration across a range of relevant performance indicators.Other Latin American economies also struggled, with Chile 43rd, Mexico 49th, Colombia 50th, Argentina 53rd, Peru 59th and Venezuela 60th. Although Mexico, Chile, Argentina and Colombia have slightly improved their positions this year, all Latin American countries in the study place in the bottom third of the ranking.

Plan for universities developing talent in Europe

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 14 Mag 2011

The European University Association (EUA) has today published a political declaration underlining the outcomes of its recent Annual conference held at Aarhus University (Denmark) which focused on the role of universities in developing talent in Europe. As political leaders in Europe begin important negotiations to determine the next EU budget (after 2013) the Aarhus Declaration begins by underlining the importance of investing in education, research and innovation to enable universities to play their full role in nurturing talented individuals and in contributing to the EU 2020 strategy for ‘smart sustainable and inclusive growth’. The Declaration is, however, not only addressed at political leaders as it also contains an action agenda for universities to develop talent. Nurturing talented individuals has always been central to the mission of Europe’s universities and becomes increasingly vital as knowledge becomes central to social and economic development and as global competition for talent increases. The Aarhus Declaration calls on universities to strengthen this role and outlines an agenda for action. It encourages universities to:
Widen access and increase capacity to respond to the needs of more diverse student populations
Develop distinctive research portfolios
Ensure that university staff and students identify with the university and its specific mission as a basis for generating and maintaining a vibrant university environment.
The statement then calls for clear university “strategies that promote talent from an early stage”, in particular:
Strengthening the links between teaching and research from an early stage and building research capacity from the undergraduate level
Building attractive and transparent career structures, tracks and opportunities for all staff
Placing a special focus on doctoral education and training and prioritising the development of career opportunities for early stage researchers
And developing and promoting the circulation of talent in order to enhance research capacity and bring new knowledge.
Finally, the statement underlines the need for:
Strong university leadership to promote talent development in all its dimensions
Ensuring a clear internationalisation strategy within universities
Ensuring an overall commitment to a quality culture and to transparency within universities
Understanding the importance of partnerships. Promoting dialogue with, and engaging a variety of stakeholders at different levels, ensures impact on society, and the development and dissemination of local knowledge in an international context.
The European University Association, as the representative organisation of both the European universities and the national rectors’ conferences, is the main voice of the higher education community in Europe. EUA’s mission is to promote the development of a coherent system of European higher education and research

Investing today in talent for tomorrow

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 19 gennaio 2011

Aarhus, Denmark 13-15 April 2011The European University Association (EUA) conference to be held at Aarhus University in Denmark where the organisation will also celebrate its 10th Anniversary and its members will elect the next EUA President (who will take office in March 2012). The theme of the conference is talent development – a topic of high relevance for the future competitiveness of Europe. Universities face the challenge of making Europe an attractive destination for the best researchers and students in the world without, however, compromising the provision of mass education. With the Bologna Process a united Europe has already demonstrated that the European model is extremely competitive and durable. Now it is time to identify ways of using this position to attract and develop the bright minds of tomorrow.
Participants will:
•    Discuss ways for Europe to increase its attractiveness for research talent
•    Debate best practices with regard to developing career development paths for young researchers
•    Exchange ideas on how to strengthen cross border collaboration on the management of quality and doctoral education
•    Debate state-of-the-art approaches to attracting and retaining talent internationally.
This conference will also be an opportunity to take stock of what EUA has achieved so far and will launch discussions with its member universities on future priorities and the most important milestones for the next decade. EUA members will also vote in the election of four new Board Members and for the next EUA President-elect who will officially take over from the current President, Professor Jean-Marc Rapp, in March 2012.  For more information about the conference, please visit:
