Migration and asylum: time to find balance between solidarity and responsibility

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 20 novembre 2020

The EU must help member states at the external borders to manage migration flows and ensure that those seeking protection are welcomed in line with its core values. At the opening of the High-level Inter-parliamentary Conference on Migration and Asylum in Europe organised by the European Parliament, EP President David Sassoli stressed that “behind migration figures there are people , each one with their own story”, adding that “they need to be at the heart of any efficient European policy on migration and asylum”. President Sassoli referred to the recent tragedy off the coast of Libya in which a six-month-old baby from Guinea lost his life after a shipwreck. He also emphasised that Italian, Spanish, Greek, and Maltese borders are, in fact, European borders: i.e. a shared responsibility for the whole Union.EC President Ursula von der Leyen also acknowledged that “far too many people are risking their lives to come to Europe” and highlighted the great contribution that migrants often make to their hosting communities – citing the German-Turkish couple behind the Pzifer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine as an example. The new Pact on Asylum and Migration aims to balance the need to welcome refugees, fight smugglers, and ensure integration and appropriate treatment for everyone, including those who cannot remain in Europe, she explained.Wolfgang Schäuble, Chair of the German Bundestag, admitted that there are no easy nor optimal solutions to this conundrum. “We must fulfil our humanitarian obligations, and saving lives at sea is a legal obligation”, he said, but sometimes we also have to cooperate with dubious regimes. He warned that cynical smugglers use EU ideals to their benefit, so “we need to show we are capable of returning people in order to not create false incentives”.The Speakers of the Portuguese and Slovenian parliaments, Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues and Igor Zorčič, also took part in the opening of the conference, since these two countries form together with Germany the trio of EU presidencies of the Council. Ferro Rodrigues noted that migration is a global phenomenon to which the EU must respond based on its founding values. “There is a lot of work to be done in the years ahead” on the basis of a new European Pact, he added. Zorčič agreed that the current asylum system has shown too many weaknesses in recent years and hoped the EU will be able to create an efficient common framework, taking into account each member state’s situation.Find here the full programme of the event. Debates will focus on the relationship between solidarity and responsibility in migration and asylum management, the external dimension, shaping partnerships with third countries, and legal migration and integration.

Time to crack on with implementation of proposed tax rules

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 29 settembre 2020

Numerous MEPs on Thursday told Commissioner for taxation Paolo Gentiloni that it was high time to tackle member state reticence to progress on tax justice. Speaking during the first hearing of the newly created subcommittee on tax matters, MEPs taking the floor as the spokesperson for their respective groups highlighted the need to quickly translate the political messages from citizens and the proposals already tabled by the Commission into tangible instruments to fight ever-growing tax evasion and avoidance. Some others also pointed out that such progress would need to happen without creating a negative effect on the EU’s competitiveness or on the purchasing power of citizens. With the crisis we are in tax fraud and evasion is even less acceptable than ever before, Commissioner Gentiloni said in his opening statement. He underlined that up to EUR 140 billion EUR are lost each year to aggressive tax planning and the VAT gap has reached around EUR 180 billion per year.MEPs urged the Commissioner to continue the work the previous Commission had left off at, calling on him to pay more attention to addressing the reticence of some of the member states which has led to a backlog of proposals in the Council. One MEP suggested that the subcommittee could help in pressuring member states by using the forum as “a space for constructive embarrassment of those who do not cooperate”, an idea openly supported by the Commissioner and some other MEPs.Right balance.Consumers’ purchasing power and the competitiveness of the EU’s companies would also need to be kept in mind when devising new taxes, some MEPs said. An MEP also said that care should be taken with the rollout of any new tax to not compound the negative economic effects from the COVID-19. The subcommittee is expected to soon agree its work programme for the coming months. The next meeting is scheduled for 28 October.

The Corona Chronicles: Space, Time, Gravity

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 27 aprile 2020

Not to worry – I will not attempt to explain Einstein’s theories in this week’s email. In fact, over the years, I have spent too much time trying to understand them and devoted too much bookshelf space to numerous volumes on the subject, from Einstein’s own book on Relativity to “Einstein for Dummies.” My inability to thoroughly comprehend, much less remember, the theories’ elucidations has exerted an overwhelming gravitational drag on my intellectual self-confidence. Imagining all those trains or elevators traveling at or near the speed of light, and failing to understand how time and space can become distorted and sag under gravity’s influence, deeply upsets my sense of relative equilibrium.Well, then, relatively speaking, how have these last weeks been going? Relative to what and to whom? Am I better off living in NYC than in the Grand Tetons? Is it better working to keep my business afloat or should I use this time for self-improvement (like finally trying to grasp General and Special Relativity, not to mention the elusive Unified Field Theory)? One thing is certain, I am not bored. Once upon a time, time was interrupted by brief, diverse intervals of activity in a variety of spaces. Now, events easily slide from one into the other and space is confined, essentially, to our apartment or the walk my wife and I take every day up and down First Avenue. Wake up, shower, dress, eat, walk, work, eat, work, cocktails, dinner, TV, sleep…wake up, shower, dress, eat, walk, work, eat, work, cocktails, dinner, TV, sleep. Sometimes we invite Governor Cuomo into our living room for drinks and an update. But even his press conferences have become, well, kind of routine. Oh, for some variety!A couple of weeks ago, I got into my car, dropped the top, drove up First Avenue and back home down Fifth. Along the way, I finally did something I’ve been wanting to do for years: I put on Beethoven’s Fifth, turned up the volume, and took revenge on all those thoughtless people blasting noise out of their boom-box cars next to me in heavy traffic. It felt liberating (and a bit selfish), but wearing my black face mask and white latex gloves was, well, kind of cool! And the best part was that time flew by in my car’s safe and relaxing space. As I was driving something less than 186,000 miles per second, there was no danger of entering a time or space warp.
Please don’t misunderstand or judge me. I am fully aware of the pleasure of work, even if business is a struggle; the reliability of a schedule, even if it is lackluster; the good fortune still to have some money in the bank, although it is dwindling; happy not to be sick, though sickened by those who are suffering, having groceries delivered instead of going out food shopping — all these, and many more, are blessings. I take nothing for granted. I am lucky to love and be loved. I am lucky to be alive. And I remain hopeful that when all this is over, the world will have shrunk into a smaller space; that time will no longer feel as if the pandemic had stopped it, and that the gravitational force that binds us together, will invisibly, yet inexorably, draw us even closer together. The “dark” evil of our time

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 11 agosto 2019

From the sixteenth century to this part, a particular evolutionary period expressed in a civilization that has tried to bring out a new cultural, economic and social identity has manifested itself, albeit with unsteady steps and some resounding retreat. To drive the push there have been more socially evolved peoples as it happened in the past with the Egyptians, the Assyrians-Babylonians, the ancient Romans and the Slavs. But it is also true, as Spengler observes: “civilizations are born, thrive briefly, decay and die “. Should we perhaps agree that our civilization is in decline and that a new one is emerging on the horizon? But what could be the warning signs? In the twentieth century, we accepted and even immediately the evolution of capitalist logics and its counterpart in Soviet-Chinese communism. Two sides of the same coin that would have intended to give an evolutionary turn to their respective systems if there had not been the collapse of the Soviet bloc that has caused a new shuffling of the cards and from which capitalism has benefited with its consumerist and hedonistic logic who have identified moral good with pleasure. Probably capitalism has managed better than Marxism to stay afloat for its transformational capacity combined with human exploitation, catching up its weaknesses: possibility of easy enrichment, use and abuse of new technologies and so on. Now the limit is glimpsed in all its different contradictions. The industry to thrive and make more profits must broaden its consumer base but can no longer do so because the poverty line has grown and with it the world population is having to deal with the logic of a job, and not for everyone, which produces for the most part low average incomes and such as to make troubled the new generations who want everything immediately and no longer tolerate an expectation from long time with poorly paid and precarious jobs. It means, wanting to grasp the essence of the problem, that the exponential growth of birth rate, the progress of medicine that lengthen life expectancy even if they do not guarantee healthy old age, have made clear that capitalism as we conceive it today and the same damage that created the ecosystem, mostly irreversible, requires a radical revision of the guiding spirit that has brought us to this day. Hence the conviction that our civilization has exhausted its cycle and that a new one is necessarily emerging. It remains to be questioned how much conflictual and dramatic it may be in its passage before it can reach the goal of a new civilization. (Riccardo Alfonso)

Time to eradicate energy poverty in Europe

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 2 luglio 2019

Around 11% of the EU population – 54 million Europeans, is affected by energy poverty. Yet, most EU countries still do not identify or quantify vulnerable energy consumers, and do not adequately target energy poverty measures.Highly concerned by energy poverty, the European Committee of the Regions has unanimously adopted the opinion ‘Multilevel governance and cross-sectoral cooperation to fight energy poverty’. It includes a series of proposals amongst which to develop further the European definition of energy poverty, targeted investments in energy efficiency, a revision of the single market that delivers low energy prices for households and time framed targets to end energy poverty.Rapporteur Kata Tüttő (HU/PES), Representative of Local Government of District 12 of Budapest, said: “Today over 50 million Europeans are forced to choose between heating and eating, living their lives in energy poverty. This has serious effects on the health and wellbeing of people and we know that women are more severely affected by it. The right to clean and affordable energy, which is also part of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, should be guaranteed to every European citizen. By leveraging investments in energy efficiency to renovate Europe’s building stock and by setting up specific social protection schemes and a properly functioning and competitive single market that delivers low energy prices for consumers, the EU will bring direct benefits and show its added value to citizens. A just energy and climate transition that does not leave anyone behind must start by eradicating energy poverty.” Basic energy prices for household consumers cannot be left to market self-regulation, Members agree. In order to limit excessive energy costs, cities and regions urge the EU to put into place legal frameworks providing Member States and local and regional authorities with the right tools to ensure affordable energy for all. In this sense, the CoR also echoes a call from the European Parliament on the European Commission to provide further guidance on when Member States are allowed to intervene in the market to avoid a ‘significant number of households’ being affected by energy poverty.Local leaders propose a moratorium on the termination or suspension of basic energy services for those citizens’ failing to pay.Cities and regions urge Member States to transpose into national laws the updated Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) by March 2020 at the latest. The new EPBD entered into force on 9 July 2018. It includes measures that will accelerate the rate of building renovation towards more energy efficient systems and strengthen the energy performance of new buildings.Yet, members recall that the renewed EPBD should be complemented with additional targets and investments to renovate Europe’s building stock without which efforts to eradicate energy poverty will be insufficient.Adequate warmth, cooling, lighting and the energy to power appliances are essential services needed to guarantee a decent standard of living and citizens’ health. Energy poverty occurs when a household suffers from a lack of adequate energy services in the home (EC).Local leaders want to see the Energy Poverty Observatory lifespan extended so to continue collecting and evaluating data as a key input for improving policies to eradicate energy poverty. Two thirds of Member States are not yet monitoring the development of energy poverty using quantitative metrics, members recall.

Canalicchio is time of new oil

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 22 novembre 2018

Limpid of an emerald green color, intense aroma and strong flavor … is the green gold of the Montalcino’s company, the new Extra virgin olive oil!“Our oil is the result of a careful selection of olives harvested at the right degree of ripeness – explains Franco Pacenti. Good quality while we have collected less olives than in the past as the result to a climate not really favorable. The low temperatures, which at the end of February were lowered by more than -9 degrees, have in fact compromised the foliage of the plants and hindered the normal growth of the olives. That 2018 will therefore be an even more precious green gold! “.In the small olive grove of only one hectare cultivate, at 320 meters on sea level, the three varieties of typical Tuscan cultivars: Frantoio, Leccino and Moraiolo. The characteristics of the fruit, the correct harvesting procedures and the milling are decisive factors for the final quality of the product. From the first cold pressing you get the ingredient at the base of the Mediterranean diet, an evo intense, fruity and spicy oil, ready to cheer the autumn evenings with an excellent bruschetta and a good glass of Franco Pacenti Red wine of Montalcino – Canalicchio. This year, with a new look, after the restyling of the company brand, the oil is available in 500ml bottles or 3 and 5 liter tins.

Why Real Time Marketing Automation? Drivers, Potentials, Challenges

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 12 agosto 2015

digitalisationThe digitalisation has made the world for companies significantly more complex and more dynamic. For customers, digitalisation means maximum transparency and availability in the market. The barriers to switching between different providers are low, the competitive pressure is increasing. Traditional differentiation attributes such as price are losing significance when the most economical provider is only a click – or a line on the comparison portal – away. Even in the digital dialogue, the customer doesn’t lose sight of the best practice. “But Amazon makes individualised product recommendations, too?” Customers are becoming more emancipated, more self-determined and express higher demands on companies. Companies therefore have no choice but to orientate themselves on the best practice and focus radically on customer orientation. The large number of options do not only have a liberating effect on the customers, the information and offer density can also make decisions difficult and stressful. Companies should bear this in mind and simplify the customer’s life through individualised communication, adapted to his requirements, wishes and interactions.
The complexity of the customer journey is also increasing. The times when customers could be lead from A to B via fixed touchpoints, is over. Customers today use a continually growing number of company-own and third party touchpoints for contact via numerous terminal devices and in a variety of contexts. Website, newsletter, communities, blogs, transaction emails, apps, mobile messenger, SMS, twitter, facebook, POS terminals, geo-location services, service hotlines are only a small selection. Customers do not differentiate between these touchpoints but expect that the company is “available” everywhere and the required information and (digital) service is immediate, convenient and available in the right quality. They also expect that the company comes across with a consistent image at all these touchpoints. A company that approaches a female customer with individualised offers on ladies’ shoes via the e-commerce app, but tries to sell her the latest men’s collection in the newsletter, is likely to lose this customer. Which requirements must be met by companies in the digital dialogue in order to meet customer expectations? Companies need to offer the right content in the required quality, individualised for each customer, respond in real time, take into consideration every interaction of the user, analyse it and feed the results immediately back into the communication, consider all relevant touchpoints, consistently communicate at each of these touchpoints,
orientate ithemselves continuously on best practice. Real Time Marketing Automation as the Key to Customers
The key to meet the market requirements lies in the correct use of real time marketing automation technology. Real time marketing automation must be able to display four key features:
The automated running of granular communication measures, individually for each user, in real time, based on his response.
The dynamic adaptation to the relevant context at the time of use: individual content e.g. based on location, weather, position in the customer lifecycle or terminal device properties.
The integration of all relevant channels in a lifecycle, including – in addition to email – social media, WhatsApp or mobile push messages in geo-fencing contexts. The data protection-compliant collection, processing and storage of real-time response data.
