TomTom Transforms Traffic Information Delivery Service

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 6 giugno 2019

Location technology specialist, TomTom (TOM2), today announced that its industry-leading traffic information service, TomTom Traffic, is now available to automakers with enhanced flexibility that can be used to further optimize traffic data consumption. TomTom Traffic’s new feature, Flexible Radius, allows automakers to dynamically change how traffic information is delivered based on the driver’s current route. Flexible Radius significantly reduces traffic data consumption, as well as the associated costs – without compromising quality. Moreover, it is fully configurable, and adaptable to the automaker’s requirements and local market needs.TomTom Traffic provides accurate information about traffic jams and expected delays on a planned route, helping drivers make better decisions that save time, reduce stress and make roads a safer place. It is an accurate, real-time service, driven by more than 600 million connected devices, that collects data on over 3.5 billion km of roadways per day.Ralf-Peter Schäfer, Head of TomTom Traffic: “TomTom used to deliver traffic data in a large radius around the vehicle, but many drives are shorter than 50 km. With the new Flexible Radius feature, we’re focusing data delivery on only the relevant traffic information, leading to lower data consumption, and significantly lower costs.”TomTom Traffic is currently available in more than 75 countries in Europe, the Americas, Africa, the Middle East and Asia.Schäfer continues: “Although car manufacturers globally will benefit, our customers in North America will find this change particularly attractive. That’s because traffic information is traditionally broadcasted in the US, rather than being delivered via a cellular data connection.”

New insights into European maritime traffic

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 29 marzo 2019

European seas are a hub of human activity. Maritime transport is so omnipresent that it inevitably affects anybody working in or with the ocean. For the first time those responsible for monitoring shipping emissions, identifying the best routes to lay pipelines and cables, assessing the impact of fishing on the seafloor or planning offshore wind farms can have maps of vessel activity on their desktops. The new EMODnet digital vessel density maps will help them visualise vessel movement patterns and distribution of maritime traffic in European waters. This allows users to access monthly composite maps by ship type for the year 2017 (with more to come). Maps are available free of charge for viewing, downloading, processing and use for commercial and non-commercial purposes alike from the EMODnet Human Activities portal. The EMODnet Human Activities team has developed a bespoke method for developing the vessel density maps, in close consultation with the Joint Research Centre (JRC).For the moment, the data available in the maps cover 2017, but 2018 data is due later this year. Regular updates will be released on the portal as soon as they become available.

Nato: warship forces pirates to release ship

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 19 marzo 2010

London. 19 crew members from a small Iranian cargo ship, SAAD 1 are now free from their pirate captors after being held for 5 months. Their release followed intervention by the Italian warship ITS Scirocco, one of five NATO warships operating in the region as part of NATO’s counter piracy mission, Operation Ocean Shield.  The Commanding Officer of ITS Scirocco, Cdr Massimiliano Giachino said:  “The success of this operation demonstrates the professionalism and determination of the crew of Scirocco in combating piracy. SAAD 1 is now free and we have provided assistance to the crew to ensure their safe return home.” Captured by Somali pirates 5 months ago the vessel has been prepared to act as a mothership to attack merchant traffic transiting the busy international waters in the Indian Ocean.  SAAD 1, with its crew under the control of pirates, sailed from Garacad on 14th March. ITS Scirocco who had been tasked to monitor pirate camps along the coast quickly took up the trail. On 16th March, once the presence of pirates had been established, ITS Scirocco forced the SAAD1 to return to the coast where it could no longer pose a threat to legitimate seafarers.  Late on 17th March as soon as the dhow arrived at the coast, the pirates fled with the NATO ship still close by. Seizing the opportunity, SAAD 1 then rapidly escaped with ITS Scirocco providing protection as the pirates fled on shore.  Both ships then proceeded into safe water where the crew of ITS Scirocco rendered assistance to the help prepare the vessel and her crew for their journey home. NATO Force Commander, Cdre Steve Chick, RN said:  “This is excellent news. Scirocco’s actions today send a very strong message to the pirates that NATO and other counter piracy forces are willing to do what is necessary to stop piracy – even if it means tackling the pirates in the vicinity of the pirate camps.”

A major effort to boost high speed rail lines

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 17 aprile 2009

Pool was escorted into Rm. 450 of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building at 8:55 a.m. POTUS was scheduled to make remarks about high speed rail at 9 a.m. but did not enter the briefing room until 9:27 a.m. POTUS entered the briefing room to applause and a standing ovation alongside the VP and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. LaHood spoke first, then the VP spoke, then POTUS spoke. About 100 people were in the audience for the remarks, including Rep. Robert Andrews of New Jersey, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter and John Horsley, head of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. POTUS wore a dark suit and red tie. He spoke for about 11 minutes, announcing a major effort to boost high speed rail lines across the country. He spoke from behind a podium on a stage. Behind him were three flags: the U.S. flag, the presidential flag and the DOT flag. To the right of the podium was a map of the U.S. showing possible high speed rail corridors. “Our highways are clogged with traffic,” he said. “We’re at the mercy of fluctuating gas prices all too often,” he said. POTUS joked that with high speed rail travelers would be able to easily get from the center of one city to another without the hassles of air travel and without having to take off their shoes. “We’ll move to cleaner energy and a cleaner environment,” he said. “I know this vision has its critics,” he said. But he said that the country can meet the goal and that his plan represented just a “first step.” POTUS wrapped up his remarks at 9:50 a.m., shook hands with a few people in the crowd and slipped out the room through a back door. He was on his way to Mexico. He had been scheduled to leave at 9:45 a.m.
