Mogherini: UAE is Strong Ally of European Union

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 10 gennaio 2019

Dr Amal Al Qubaisi, Speaker of the UAE Parliament, led a high-level delegation to the European Parliament in Brussels, met with Federica Mogherini, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, and discussed UAE-EU relations. Dr Al Qubaisi highlighted the issue of the three UAE islands occupied by Iran and called to resolve the issue through direct negotiations or international arbitration. She presented an overview of the UAE’s role in international counter-terrorism efforts, establishing the Sawab Center and hosting Hedayah Center, and noted that 2019 is the UAE Year of Tolerance. She commended the decision of the UAE President in raising the representation of women in parliament to 50 percent.
Mogherini stressed the importance and depth of the cooperation and partnership and noted that the EU is keen to strengthen cooperation with the UAE, a valuable ally in the fight against terrorism and in achieving security and stability. She welcomed the approach adopted by the UAE and its progressive mindset, in terms of women empowerment, gender equality, tolerance and coexistence.Mogherini expressed the EU’s appreciation for the UAE’s efforts for stability in Yemen, noting that the UAE is instrumental in securing political settlement in line with its interest in finding a peaceful solution: “We appreciate the UAE’s role in this regard as well as the aid offered to refugees in different countries.” She reiterated the importance of stability for returning refugees.Mogherini further acknowledged Libya’s role in ensuring regional stability, as well as its efforts to achieve peace among various parties.Mogherini noted that there is significant cooperation between the EU and GCC countries. Regarding security, the nuclear deal with Iran is the best means available to ensure its disarmament. She added that the EU would like to see Iran change its foreign policy and adopt a policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of its neighbors.
Dr Al Qubaisi added: “The UAE’s stance of non-interference in the internal affairs of countries is diametrically opposed to Iran’s supporting the Houthi militias in Yemen with arms and missiles. We condemn the move of the Houthis to stop humanitarian aid from reaching Yemenis in need. The UAE has contributed US$4.9 billion in humanitarian aid to Yemen from April 2015 until December 2018.”

Class action against UK Government for failing in ‘duty of care’ to British citizens in countries like the UAE

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 18 ottobre 2017

CozyA landmark class action against the UK government is being prepared by clients of Radha Stirling, David Haigh and a UK Queen’s Counsel. The action is based on the UK government’s failure in its duty of care towards citizens about the dangers of places like Dubai and the UAE. The Government has failed to give sufficient warning to UK nationals travelling to the Sharia governed desert state, it has failed to respond to requests for help for British citizens who fall foul of the strict laws, and when it does respond, it takes almost no action on behalf of its citizens. The Treaty between the UK and UAE on judicial assistance in civil and commercial matters. (2009) states in Article 1 that, “Nationals of one Party shall, in the territory of the other Party, enjoy the same judicial protection as nationals of the other Party and shall have the right of access to courts of the other Party under the same conditions as those for the nationals of the other Party.” This is clearly not the normal experience of UK Nationals in countries like the UAE.Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai and Managing Partner at Stirling Haigh, a UK based legal advisory firm, along with Queen’s Counsel, have reviewed a number of cases of British nationals who have suffered legal abuse abroad. They are fielding calls from citizens seeking to join the action and expect the total number of complainants to be in the vicinity of 50-100.Statements taken so far have included everything from small debt cases, wrongful arrest, false imprisonment and detention without charges, to large commercial cases where the UK hasn’t enforced the Treaty and large amounts of money have been lost. The breaches have left UK businessmen and private individuals flailing as Emirati companies are allowed to steal from UK businessmen with impunity. In the UK, they are protected by the lack of enforcement of the treaty and in the UAE, they are protected by the courts and the law, while UK nationals remain fully exposed, imprisoned and in many cases left penniless. The recent case of Dr. Haddad who has lost millions of pounds of profits and investments in KMG holdings will feature prominently in the lawsuit. Dr. Haddad was a successful businessman in the UAE, and a partner in the highly profitable KM Holdings when he was illegally deprived of his corporate assets by his local business partner, who then employed Habib Al Mulla to file a series of frivolous civil cases against him.Mr Haddad stated “The aim of this was to lock me out of my own business and to appropriate my shares in the company. In order to achieve this, Habib Al Mulla illegally represented both partners in the same civil case, without having obtained Power of Attorney. During this farcical court case, Al Mulla “confessed” on my behalf (with no legal authority to do so) to the crime of embezzlement, which ultimately led to my being criminally charged, and to the theft of my GBP 250,000 pound share in my own company.”
Radha Stirling has issued a statement on the recent developments within the action, she says that, “repeated warnings have been issued to the UK FCO, by myself and other individuals concerning the inadequacy of their protection and the inaccuracy of their advice. Dr Haddad has spoken to them personally about his case, they admitted that the treaty has been breached but still refused to enforce it. The UK FCO have refused to make themselves publicly accountable, instead giving preference to diplomatic relations and protecting trade agreements; even to the detriment of UK citizens.”Ms. Stirling continues, “Because Emiratis are the largest investors in the UK, they are being protected over the interests of UK nationals when it comes to business. Emirati companies are overtly favoured and using assets stolen from UK businessmen in the UAE to make their investments. It’s time for the treaty to be enforced thoroughly to stop all breaches, the UK government needs to make it known that it is on the side of its citizens, rather than foreign business investors. ” Radha Stirling said “The FCO, while giving some travel advice, have not provided remotely sufficient information to the British public to help them avoid arrest. The majority of British nationals travelling to the UAE are committing ‘crimes’ without knowing it, such as sharing certain posts on Facebook and Twitter, drinking alcohol on the flight, sharing a room with their partner, holding hands in public and so on. The government does not advise citizens of the serious flaws in the judicial system that could leave people locked up for years merely on one person’s hearsay accusation. The UK Courts will not even extradite people to the UAE and in their high court ruling stated this is because of the “real risk of human rights violations and unfair trials”. If the UK courts are aware of the risks, the government needs to follow suit and advise their citizens.”

David Rothkopf, CEO and Editor of the FP Group, said, “We are on the verge of a historical watershed, for the first time ever every person on the planet will be connected together thanks to new technology in a single global cultural ecosystem. That offers the promise of greater understanding and also is perceived as threatening our unique cultural heritages. How we grapple with those issues has profound consequences for the planet.”Carla Dirlikov Canales, CEO of TCP Ventures said, “Since our focus is culture, a vital part of the meeting will be using the arts to illustrate key points, creating new collaborations and seeking to identify ways to mobilize the talents of the artistic community to help address the biggest problems we face worldwide.”

Dubai, UAE, Dubai resident Scott Ragsdale is now within touching distance of successfully completing naseba seven – so named because it entails seven iron-distance triathlons across the seven Emirates of the UAE in seven consecutive days. Today he is in Dubai, where he has lived for the past five years. The penultimate day of the challenge started at 7.00am; with Scott swimming the required 3.8 km in the ocean adjacent to the Union House flagpole that commemorates the birthplace of the UAE. On December 2nd 1971 the rulers of all seven Emirates met inside this house to sign the declaration that brought into effect a temporary constitution – and established the independent state of the United Arab Emirates. During the course of today he’ll pass local landmarks the World Islands, Burj Khalifa and Safa Park, amongst others. He’ll finish today’s leg of naseba seven at the offices of his company in Dubai Media City.Having successfully swam across the English Channel last year, the UAE was selected as the venue of this year’s challenge due to Ragsdale’s affinity to the country, and in honour of the Emirates 40th anniversary – which coincides with the American’s 40th birthday. “I love every bit of the UAE and thought, why can’t we put something together here? That’s how naseba seven was born, out of personal ambition, the type of ambition I’m seeking to inspire into others by completing the seven iron-distance triathlons,” he explained. In fact, naseba seven has been officially incorporated in to the 40th UAE National Day celebrations programme – as well as being endorsed by the country’s leading body for all sporting and youth-related activities, the UAE General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare. It has also received support from many UAE bodies, including the Abu Dhabi Municipality and the Abu Dhabi Sports Council.Right from the start its theme has been “but I have to make it happen…” and its aim is to prove that anyone can achieve something exceptional, if the appropriate focus, preparation and determination are applied. Ragsdale continued: “There are lots of [so called] average people out there doing exceptional things. I am nobody special, trying to do something physically special. Ideally, people who hear about my challenge will reflect on themselves; reflect on their own goals and dreams. A dream or goal means nothing if you don’t make the necessary preparation and effort and go after it.” Tomorrow’s finale takes place in Abu Dhabi, with the climax being hosted at its picturesque corniche. It will see the UAE General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare, the Abu Dhabi Municipality and both the Abu Dhabi and Dubai Sports Council joining Scott to celebrate his unique accomplishment.
“I wanted to prove to myself I can be consistent and focused enough to make this happen – and ideally through my actions I will inspire those around me,” he remarked.
