232 million international migrants living abroad worldwide–new UN global migration statistics reveal

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 17 settembre 2013

New York. There are as many international migrants born in the South living in other countries in the South as in countries in the North, reflecting changing patterns of Asian migration, but globally the United States remains the most popular destination, according to new data presented by the United Nations today. More people than ever are living abroad. In 2013, 232 million people, or 3.2 per cent of the world’s population, were international migrants, compared with 175 million in 2000 and 154 million in 1990. The new estimates include breakdowns by region and country of destination and origin, and by sex and age. The North, or developed countries, is home to 136 million international migrants, compared to 96 million in the South, or developing countries. Most international migrants are of working age (20 to 64 years) and account for 74 per cent of the total. Globally, women account for 48 per cent of all international migrants. The data were released in advance of the upcoming High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development, which will take place 3-4 October 2013 at UN Headquarters. The purpose of the High-level Dialogue is to identify concrete measures to strengthen coherence and cooperation at all levels, with a view to enhancing the benefits of international migration for migrants and countries alike and its important links to development, while reducing its negative implications.“Migration, when governed fairly, can make a very important contribution to social and economic development both in the countries of origin and in the countries of destination,” said Mr. Wu Hongbo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs. “Migration broadens the opportunities available to individuals and is a crucial means of broadening access to resources and reducing poverty.”The data show that South-South migration is as common as South-North migration. In 2013, about 82.3 million international migrants who were born in the South were residing in the South, which is slightly higher than the 81.9 million international migrants originating in the South and living in the North.Asians and Latin Americans living outside of their home regions form the largest global diaspora groups. In 2013, Asians represented the largest group, accounting for about 19 million migrants living in Europe, some 16 million in Northern America and about 3 million in Oceania. Migrants born in Latin America and the Caribbean represented the second largest diaspora group with the majority, 26 million, living in Northern America. In 2013, South Asians were the largest group of international migrants living outside of their home region. Of the 36 million international migrants from South Asia, 13.5 million resided in the oil-producing countries in Western Asia. International migrants originating from Central America, including Mexico, represented another large group of migrants living outside their home region. About 16.3 million, out of 17.4 million Central American migrants lived in the US.
Europe and Asia combined host nearly two-thirds of all international migrants worldwide. Europe remains the most popular destination region with 72 million international migrants in 2013, compared to 71 million in Asia. Since 1990, Northern America recorded the largest gain in the absolute number of international migrants, adding 25 million, and experienced the fastest growth in migrant stock by an average of 2.8 per cent per year.“New sources and destinations of migrants are emerging, and in some cases, countries have become important points of origin, transit and destination simultaneously,” said John Wilmoth, Director of the Population Division in the UN’s Department of Economic and Social Affairs.Compared to other regions of destination, Asia saw the largest increase of international migrants since 2000, adding some 20 million migrants in 13 years. Mr. Wilmoth said this growth was mainly fuelled by the increasing demand for foreign labour in the oil-producing countries of Western Asia and in South-Eastern Asian countries with rapidly growing economies, such as Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.International migration remains highly concentrated
In 2013, half of all international migrants lived in 10 countries, with the US hosting the largest number (45.8 million), followed by the Russian Federation (11 million); Germany (9.8 million); Saudi Arabia (9.1 million); United Arab Emirates (7.8 million); United Kingdom (7.8 million); France (7.4 million); Canada (7.3 million); Australia (6.5 million); and Spain (6.5 million). The US gained the largest absolute number of international migrants between 1990 and 2013—nearly 23 million, equal to one million additional migrants per year. The United Arab Emirates recorded the second largest gain with seven million, followed by Spain with six million.

Flee the Unseasonably Cold UK Weather with Mid-Haul Holiday Offers from Hayes and Jarvis

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 3 aprile 2013

London, PRNewswire Take advantage of warm temperatures in the Middle East and North Africa with tempting holiday offers from the long haul specialist. With spring well underway, sun-starved Brits are still awaiting the first signs of the changing season as wintery weather continues to dominate in the UK. After a long winter punctuated by several snow flurries that brought the nation to a halt, chilly travellers can be forgiven for wanting to get away from the freezing conditions for a few days. With this in mind, Hayes and Jarvis are pleased to reveal a selection of tempting offers on mid-haul holidays to Dubai, Egypt and Abu Dhabi, perfect for beating those winter blues. Not only are these destinations virtually guaranteed to enjoy great weather, they are, at most, just a seven hour flight from the UK, meaning a swift transition from rain and bitter wind, to balmy temperatures and cocktails by the pool or beach. Egypt is one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations and is renowned for its wealth of historical treasures just waiting to be explored. From ancient ruins in Luxor to the pyramids and the river Nile, culture vultures are spoiled for choice here. Egypt is equally adept however as a luxury holiday location and the Ritz-Carlton in Sharm El Sheikh exemplifies five star treatment with five restaurants, three bars, five pools, sports facilities and a wellness centre. Stay here with Hayes and Jarvis for seven nights on a bed and breakfast basis from just £499 per person, saving up to £730 per couple. This offer includes a 50% accommodation discount. Flights depart on 21 April 2013 from Manchester. Abu Dhabi is the capital city of the United Arab Emirates, arguably the Middle East’s most popular destination with holiday makers, and although it may have been overshadowed by its sister city Dubai until recently, Abu Dhabi has become more than a worthy rival to the UAE’s second city. Beautiful Gulf Coast beaches give way to a pristine cityscape that fuses traditional souks with ultra modern malls. Stay here for seven nights at the Beach Rotana Hotel and Towers on a bed and breakfast basis from just £749 per person, saving up to £276 per couple. Flights depart on 16 May 2013 from London Heathrow.
Dubai needs little introduction, this glistening metropolis rising from the desert offers the best of both city living and beach culture. Explore the vast malls, water parks and marvel at the Burj Khalifa, or just relax on the beach and soak up some sun. The Ocean View Hotel makes for a great base, and Hayes and Jarvis are delighted to offer complimentary half board here on a three night stay from just £699 per person, saving up to £394 per couple. Flights depart from London Gatwick on 22 April 2013.

Declaration of Alumni of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations

English: The 62nd General Assembly of the United Nations begins on September 25, 2007. According to tradition since the 1970’s, a Brazilian gives the inaugural speech. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Your Excellencies, Heads of States and Governments,
At the occasion of the 67th General Assembly of the United Nations, which is being held in troubled times of renewed violence and manifestations of anger between Western, Middle-East and North African countries, we thought it is our responsibility to share a message as Alumni of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) Fellowship Programme. We believe that the General Assembly of the United Nations, comprising all 193 Members States, provides a unique and crucial forum for multilateral discussions. For a life in freedom, dignity and security, we urge all participants in this 67th session to exert their responsible leadership and make the dialogue of civilizations an absolute priority. The effort to bridge the cultural divide needs to be redoubled, promoting mutual understanding, trust and respect among and within societies at all levels.
We respect the right of freedom of expression, and are hopeful that all those availing themselves of that right do so in a responsible manner. We believe that any form of provocation can make misunderstanding bigger and feed the spiral of violence.Quoting a recent interview of Jorge Sampaio, UN High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations and former President of the Portuguese Republic, we believe “it’s important to recognize that one person’s contemptible actions do not necessarily represent an entire nation, or everyone in a particular group or of a certain faith”. The overwhelming majority must occupy its rightful place in the dialogue, and not leave it to extremists.
Our group, as well as other networks of cultural ambassadors and global citizens, is most willing to mobilize positive energies and bring our determined contribution to develop diplomatic capital and cross cultural civic engagement. We took the initiative of this Declaration as members of an emerging international community, composed of 200 young leaders from more than 30 countries. Active in the fields of business, media, government and civil society, we all share the founding and lifetime experience of the UNAOC Fellowship Programme, aiming to enhance mutual knowledge and understanding between peoples and societies from Europe, North America and Muslim-majority countries in the Arab World. Thanks to this experience, we were given a unique opportunity to discuss long-term solutions for increased collaboration and friendship between the Western and the Arab world, going far beyond negative stereotypes, learning from each other and leveraging the many values we have in common. We believe in the extraordinary power of dialogue to change perceptions and avoid outdated radicalism and sensationalism. By taking part to the UNAOC Fellowship Programme, we accepted the challenge to apply lessons learned to both our personal and professional lives, in an effort to contribute as humble but committed agents of change. We believe that the Alliance of Civilizations is a timely, rightful and vital UN initiative aimed at improving understanding between the Western world and the Muslim world. Together with such like-minded organizations and programmes promoting intercultural dialogue, it should urgently be given all appropriate means to reach more people, especially young professionals, to raise awareness and reinforce individual and collective capacities to build one humanity out of our diverse cultures.
As we draft this declaration, two new groups of UNAOC Fellows, one from the Arab world and one from the Western world, are getting ready for a two-week discovery trip to Morocco, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, USA, Germany, Belgium and France. During this time, they will meet with policy makers, media leaders, local communities, grassroots organizations, and religious representatives to better understand how each of those societies embraces change. It is our hope that many more Fellows will continue the conversation through similar experiences in the years to come.Cultural diversity is our world’s most meaningful and precious asset. Let’s join our voices and efforts to foster pluralism and address in an appropriate way the alarming rise of all kinds of extremism.

Dubai, naseba seven – a week-long test of endurance which will see Scott Ragsdale attempt seven iron-distance triathlons across the seven Emirates of the UAE in seven consecutive days – has been officially incorporated in to the 40th UAE National Day celebrations programme. The seven-day challenge is endorsed by the country’s leading body for all sporting and youth-related activities, the UAE General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare, as it complements their ‘live a healthy lifestyle’ campaign. Municipality of Abu Dhabi City, the Main Partner for the challenge, and Abu Dhabi Sports Council are amongst some of the UAE bodies that have extended their support for naseba seven.naseba seven starts in the Emirate of Fujairah on November 24th and concludes in Abu Dhabi on November 30th. In the ensuing three weeks, Scott will participate in a number of local activities designed to encourage individuals to focus on pursuing their aspirations and goals. These include school and other public visits where the ultimate aim is to have a positive impact. This week he planned to complete his third test week in Fujairah – effectively a practice run for naseba seven. The purpose of this final test week was to simulate the challenge and ensure Scott is fully prepared both mentally and physically. However on day four Scott crashed whilst cycling on a main road, sustaining injuries to his hip, shoulder and hand. As he hit the hard, dusty surface he suffered a blow to his head which split his helmet. As a precautionary measure he was taken to Fujairah hospital – with results later confirming he had not suffered a concussion. Following the incident Scott explained: “My leg is stiff and I won’t be able to train for several days and probably won’t be able to run for a week. This just adds to the challenge because when you fall down you just have to get back up and keep on climbing.”

Dubai. Starting in Fujairah on November 25th, Scott Rasgdale will attempt to complete an iron-distance triathlon every day for seven days across the seven emirates of the UAE. That’s a 3.8 km swim, followed by a 180 km cycle and 42 km run – every day for seven consecutive days across the seven Emirates of the UAE. naseba seven is endorsed by the UAE General Authority of Sports and Welfare, and has received support from many UAE partners including Etihad Airways and the Abu Dhabi Sports Council. In addition, Scott is proud to be sponsored by some of the leading brands in sports, including Puma, LOOK cycles, Mavic, and Austrian-based companies Repuls and Peeroton. The seven-day challenge is powered by Puma, and since Scott switched to wearing their FAAS 500 running shoes, his knee pain after long runs has vanished. He commented: “I had both my knees operated on at the beginning of the year, and after every run I experienced terrible knee pain. Since I started training in the FAAS 500s, I have not felt any pain in my knees – none at all. I am sure this is because of the shoes.”One of the premier brands in cycling and the inventor of the first track single-piece carbon frame, LOOK, is the official bike sponsor and will be providing onsite support throughout the seven days. For the past six weeks they have been working closely with Scott and his coach on creating the perfect tri bike for his training, and on race day. Elite French company Mavic is sponsoring the shoes, helmet and wheels Scott will be using. Hardcore physical activity every day for seven consecutive days requires the ultimate in nutritional support. Peeroton is ensuring there is sufficient nutritional supplement support to aid Scott’s attempt to successfully complete the seven days. Finally, with recovery between each day all-important, Repuls is contributing products that reduce inflammation, pain and injuries by using intensive red light treatment.
Coinciding with the UAE’s 40th National Day theme and celebrations, naseba seven’s comprehensive schedule culminates in a one-day body and mind exhibiting platform taking place on December 1st in Abu Dhabi.
