University of Toulon: International Proclamation of the Charter on the Law of the Living

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 29 Maggio 2021

As the culmination of the university’s trilogy about the legal personhood of animal, the Charter on the Law of the Living aims, like the Declaration of Toulon, to inspire institutional reforms in France and abroad. Faced with Nature’s unprecedented decline and the accelerating rate of species extinction, experts from the UN’s Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) are calling for “transformative changes” that could act as “New Paradigms, goals and values.» The Charter on the Law of the Living fits into this perspective by recalling certain forms of solidarity and the need to maintain a balance between the interests of human beings, Animals and Nature. It thus offers different keys to interpretation, facilitating the transition from a law “about” the living to a law “of” the living. The coordinator of the HwN Program, Maria Mercedes Sanchez, will deliver a keynote speech before the proclamation of the Charter (simultaneously translated into French, English and Spanish) broadcast on the University’s YouTube channel, as well as on its Facebook page. The Charter is the culmination of a scientific trilogy on the legal personhood of animals – a French research program started by Caroline Regad and Cédric Riot, lawyers at the University of Toulon – that calls for a reformulation of the category of legal personhood to include non-human persons. The trilogy is intended to inspire national and international discourse on the legal personhood of animals. The first chapter gave rise to a proposal to draft a text of law aimed at integrating the concept of non-human natural personhood in the French legal system. The second was marked by the proclamation, on 29 March2019, of the Toulon Declaration issued in response to the Cambridge Declaration of July 7, 2012.It has since been spread around the world by actors who want to change the legal status of animals. The third chapter of the trilogy will conclude with the proclamation of the Charter on the Law of the Living, with the objective to inspire reforms and incorporate the legal personhood of animals into the legal systems of more states.

(NASDAQ:NXGN), a leading provider of ambulatory-focused technology solutions, today announced that University Hospitals Health System—a leading health system with 18 hospitals, more than 50 health centers and outpatient facilities and over 200 physician offices throughout northern Ohio—has selected NextGen® Population Health to help them enhance patient care. The NextGen solution integrates with most Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and Health Information Exchanges (HIEs) while ingesting claims feeds from a wide range of payers. For providers who participate in value-based care arrangements or focus on population health management, NextGen provides powerful patient analytics, identifies gaps in care or practice pattern variations, and helps improve outcomes by seamlessly integrating these insights into the provider workflow to enable proactive point of care discussions.
Managing one of the nation’s largest accountable care organizations representing more than 575,000 lives, UH’s goal is to change the health care industry narrative by emphasizing efforts that help people “stay healthy at home” versus only “healing patients in a hospital.” The NextGen Healthcare solution looks at claims data from payers as well as information contained in patients’ medical records to identify health care gaps that should be addressed such as obtaining a mammogram for women over 40.
Annually, $192 billion is spent on healthcare overtreatment and approximately $200 billion is wasted on unnecessary medical tests and treatments. NextGen Population Health tackles these issues through the aggregation and analysis of patient data, which drives meaningful insights across clinical, financial and administrative data. Ultimately, ACOs can more effectively engage patients, reduce costs and improve the health care value proposition that patients deserve.

Layton Construction Successfully Implodes Vanderbilt University Residence Hall

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 29 luglio 2019

Construction demolished one of the tallest buildings on the campus of Vanderbilt University, Carmichael West Tower 3 residence hall, today. The removal of Carmichael Tower 3 makes way for the second of three new collegiate residences in the West End Neighborhood of Vanderbilt. The controlled implosion of the 14-story Tower was approximately an 11-second process overseen by Layton Construction, LLC, acting Construction Manager of Vanderbilt’s West End Neighborhood and Residential Colleges, and Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI), a national leader in large-structure controlled demolition. The implosion was triggered by a series of dynamite explosives placed into the structural elements of the building, creating the strategic “fall” of the tower.
Patterson says the key to success was teamwork in building preparation. “There was an immense amount of work and coordination performed by multiple parties to ensure that this critical implosion date was met on schedule.”Located on West End Avenue between 24th and 25th avenues, Carmichael Towers 3 and 4 have been home to tens of thousands of students since their opening in 1970. Named in memory of the university’s third Chancellor, Oliver Cromwell Carmichael, the residence halls served undergraduate students.Prior to the July 27 implosion, Carmichael Tower 4 served as the site for a unique training exercise for more than 800 Nashville firefighters. The Carmichael Towers 1&2 on West End Avenue will remain open to residents through the 2019-20 academic year.

NCAA approves Davenport University for active Division II membership

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 15 luglio 2019

Davenport University announced today that it has received approval from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for active Division II (DII) membership. The private four-year university completed the membership process over the past three years.
The NCAA DII philosophy, which places emphasis on finding balance between academic and athletic achievement while taking time to build relationships and participate in the wider community, is directly in-line with the university’s values. This alignment, combined with consistent growth, financial stability, notability in athletics and academic honors, positioned Davenport to successfully pursue NCAA DII active membership. The university started the membership process in February 2016 and began competing as a provisional member in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) during the 2017-18 academic year. The GLIAC includes 11 other member institutions that span across Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Wisconsin.Today’s decision by the NCAA moves Davenport from a provisional member to an active member, making the university’s 22 NCAA-sponsored teams eligible to compete in NCAA DII postseason championships. As an active member of NCAA DII, Davenport’s student-athletes, coaches and teams will also be eligible to receive national NCAA awards, honors and other association benefits. The university’s active membership status goes into effect on September 1. Since joining the GLIAC, Davenport’s men’s basketball team won a GLIAC regular season title (2018-19) and its men’s soccer team won a GLIAC Tournament title (2017). In the last two seasons, seven of Davenport’s student-athletes received All-GLIAC top honors and 467 student-athletes received All-Academic honors.

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 1 Maggio 2019

The United States is facing a critical absence of diversity in medicine, and the disproportionately low numbers of African-American doctors is causing negative health outcomes in communities across the country. Reflecting its commitment to improve diversity among the nation’s doctors, Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM) has entered into an agreement with Tuskegee University in Alabama to increase the number of African-American students who enter medical school at RUSM, and ultimately become physicians. This educational pathway allows qualified Tuskegee students who earn full acceptance into the medical school to receive a scholarship covering full tuition for the first semester. These students will spend the first two years of medical school at the RUSM campus in Barbados.
RUSM has a diverse student population with 51 percent of students being persons of color. With more than 14,000 alumni, RUSM graduates practice in direct patient care in all 50 states, including a high percentage of graduates who are in the essential field of primary care. African Americans make up only six percent1 of U.S. physicians. While most U.S. medical schools had an average of eight African-American graduates this past year, RUSM had more than 80.
RUSM recently announced similar agreements with Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science. As part of its continued commitment to addressing diversity in medicine, RUSM’s parent company, Adtalem Global Education (NYSE: ATGE), signed on to the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Partnership Challenge created by the Congressional Bipartisan HBCU Caucus, pledging to invest in creating strategic collaborations with HBCUs and working to increase diversity in key workforce sectors. Having recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, RUSM is part of Adtalem Global Education’s medical and healthcare education vertical, which also includes American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in Sint Maarten, Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in St. Kitts, and Chamberlain University, the largest provider of nursing education in the United States. Adtalem is a mission-driven educator and workforce solutions provider with institutions and companies around the world, including the U.S., Caribbean, Europe, Asia and Brazil.
