Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 14 agosto 2019

GeneCentric Therapeutics, Inc. today announced that it has entered the second phase of an academic-industry collaboration with Jose Zevallos MD, MPH, Chief of the Division of Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. This collaboration is funded by a National Cancer Institute (NCI) R01 grant, awarded in August 2017 to Dr. Zevallos. The grant supports the investigation of novel approaches to improve outcomes for patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Titled “Development of a Four-Class, Molecular Subtyping Diagnostic for HPV-Negative Head and Neck Cancer,” the grant is focused on the development of a clinic-ready tumor subtyping diagnostic test, in collaboration with GeneCentric Therapeutics, that will guide treatment decisions for patients with HPV-negative HNSCC.The HPV-negative subtyper being applied under this NCI grant is a modified version of GeneCentric’s previously-developed Head and Neck Cancer Subtype Profiler (HNSP™). Following successful completion of phase 1 development of a reduced gene-set signature, GeneCentric is poised to commence phase 2 validation studies with Dr. Zevallos and his team. The last stage of the NCI grant, phase 3, entails final confirmation of the HNSCC diagnostic test and commercialization.“This research has the potential to impact treatment for a broad range of patients with head and neck cancer. Our aim is to better identify cancers that are resistant to radiation therapy. We also hope the test will more accurately identify patients with occult lymph node metastasis and help surgeons make more informed decisions on when surgery to remove neck tumors should be offered to patients,” said Dr. Zevallos of the NCI sponsored partnership with GeneCentric.

Layton Construction Successfully Implodes Vanderbilt University Residence Hall

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 29 luglio 2019

Construction demolished one of the tallest buildings on the campus of Vanderbilt University, Carmichael West Tower 3 residence hall, today. The removal of Carmichael Tower 3 makes way for the second of three new collegiate residences in the West End Neighborhood of Vanderbilt. The controlled implosion of the 14-story Tower was approximately an 11-second process overseen by Layton Construction, LLC, acting Construction Manager of Vanderbilt’s West End Neighborhood and Residential Colleges, and Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI), a national leader in large-structure controlled demolition. The implosion was triggered by a series of dynamite explosives placed into the structural elements of the building, creating the strategic “fall” of the tower.
Patterson says the key to success was teamwork in building preparation. “There was an immense amount of work and coordination performed by multiple parties to ensure that this critical implosion date was met on schedule.”Located on West End Avenue between 24th and 25th avenues, Carmichael Towers 3 and 4 have been home to tens of thousands of students since their opening in 1970. Named in memory of the university’s third Chancellor, Oliver Cromwell Carmichael, the residence halls served undergraduate students.Prior to the July 27 implosion, Carmichael Tower 4 served as the site for a unique training exercise for more than 800 Nashville firefighters. The Carmichael Towers 1&2 on West End Avenue will remain open to residents through the 2019-20 academic year.

NCAA approves Davenport University for active Division II membership

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 15 luglio 2019

Davenport University announced today that it has received approval from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for active Division II (DII) membership. The private four-year university completed the membership process over the past three years.
The NCAA DII philosophy, which places emphasis on finding balance between academic and athletic achievement while taking time to build relationships and participate in the wider community, is directly in-line with the university’s values. This alignment, combined with consistent growth, financial stability, notability in athletics and academic honors, positioned Davenport to successfully pursue NCAA DII active membership. The university started the membership process in February 2016 and began competing as a provisional member in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) during the 2017-18 academic year. The GLIAC includes 11 other member institutions that span across Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Wisconsin.Today’s decision by the NCAA moves Davenport from a provisional member to an active member, making the university’s 22 NCAA-sponsored teams eligible to compete in NCAA DII postseason championships. As an active member of NCAA DII, Davenport’s student-athletes, coaches and teams will also be eligible to receive national NCAA awards, honors and other association benefits. The university’s active membership status goes into effect on September 1. Since joining the GLIAC, Davenport’s men’s basketball team won a GLIAC regular season title (2018-19) and its men’s soccer team won a GLIAC Tournament title (2017). In the last two seasons, seven of Davenport’s student-athletes received All-GLIAC top honors and 467 student-athletes received All-Academic honors.

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 1 Mag 2019

The United States is facing a critical absence of diversity in medicine, and the disproportionately low numbers of African-American doctors is causing negative health outcomes in communities across the country. Reflecting its commitment to improve diversity among the nation’s doctors, Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM) has entered into an agreement with Tuskegee University in Alabama to increase the number of African-American students who enter medical school at RUSM, and ultimately become physicians. This educational pathway allows qualified Tuskegee students who earn full acceptance into the medical school to receive a scholarship covering full tuition for the first semester. These students will spend the first two years of medical school at the RUSM campus in Barbados.
RUSM has a diverse student population with 51 percent of students being persons of color. With more than 14,000 alumni, RUSM graduates practice in direct patient care in all 50 states, including a high percentage of graduates who are in the essential field of primary care. African Americans make up only six percent1 of U.S. physicians. While most U.S. medical schools had an average of eight African-American graduates this past year, RUSM had more than 80.
RUSM recently announced similar agreements with Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science. As part of its continued commitment to addressing diversity in medicine, RUSM’s parent company, Adtalem Global Education (NYSE: ATGE), signed on to the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Partnership Challenge created by the Congressional Bipartisan HBCU Caucus, pledging to invest in creating strategic collaborations with HBCUs and working to increase diversity in key workforce sectors. Sixth year for: “You are not an enemy!”

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 7 novembre 2018

At the Università Europea di Roma (the European University of Rome) the sixth year of the Communication Workshop activity has started, entitled “You are not an enemy!”, established by the journalist Carlo Climati.
The goal of the Workshop is to make youngsters aware that there is a new way of communicating based on dialogue and serene reception of others without considering them enemies.
The workshop, theoretical and practical, is part of the social responsibility activity of the Università Europea di Roma. It explores the various ways to communicate in today’s world ranging from journalism to social networks, from music to radio-broadcasting, from tv-broadcasting to daily life dialogue.
“You are not an enemy!” is the motto, i.e. the catch phrase of the Workshop. Youngsters are encouraged to see others with a new glance, to create communication languages representing a link with everyone, thereby contributing to breaking walls, obstacles, suspicion and distrust. “You often think that communication is based upon torrent of words and opinions. Actually, the basic rule of good communication is not to be able to talk but to listen,” Carlo Climati stated. “Each human being is praiseworthy . Meeting and listening to him, means to open one’s heart to a genuine communication nourished by a serene dialogue.”
However, to do this, we need to defeat the non-culture of prejudice. It is that feeling which leads us not to communicate with others because, inside us, we have already judged and labelled them putting them aside and sending them away.
Very often we have this type of attitude, withdrawing from our fellow neighbour. We don’t approach him because he has different ideas from ours. God knows what he might have that causes us to have a prejudice against him. “The prejudice is a terrible thing because, as the word itself says, it is a pre-judgement. A judgement expressed before knowing the person really, before hugging each other and looking into one’s eyes,” Carlo Climati explained.
“Sometimes, the prejudice can be a death sentence, because it kills communication, dialogue, and the possibility of finding a new friend. This is how walls are built as well as wars, silence, and unsolved conflicts of daily life. Defeating prejudices means to find our most genuine nature to communicate as human beings, serenely ready to welcome and to dialogue with everyone.”
