Autonomous-driving Technologies Incorporated in New xAUTO Test Vehicle

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (TOKYO: 6503) announced today that it would exhibit the latest version of the xAUTO, a vehicle capable of autonomous driving on surface roads without high-definition maps and autonomous parking both indoors and outdoors, during the 46th Tokyo Motor Show 2019 at the Tokyo Big Sight exhibition complex from October 24 to November 4. The xAUTO is a demonstration car that incorporates Mitsubishi Electric’s cutting-edge technologies for autonomous driving.Mitsubishi Electric’s autonomous driving system is realized with sensor-fusion technologies implemented with peripheral sensors, millimeter-wave radar and cameras, etc. as well as infrastructure-assisted technologies incorporating Centimeter Level Augmentation Service (CLAS) signals from the Quasi Zenith Satellite System and high-definition three-dimensional maps. The system, which is now capable of driving on surface roads without high-definition maps and autonomous parking both indoors and outdoors, has been tested on actual surface roads near Tokyo’s waterfront and in the city of Tsukuba, located north of Tokyo. Going forward, Mitsubishi Electric expects to realize fully autonomous driving in designated areas (Autonomous Driving Level 4) by implementing proprietary traffic-control technologies, which are currently deployed for both railways and aircrafts, and artificial-intelligence (AI) technology, namely Maisart®.

Travelers Joins Automated Vehicle Coalitions in Shaping the Future of Transportation

The Travelers Companies, Inc. (NYSE: TRV) today announced that it has joined the Advanced Vehicle Technology (AVT) Consortium at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Partners for Automated Vehicle Education (PAVE). Both organizations work to strategically advance research and public information about automated vehicle and driver assistance technologies.The AVT Consortium includes top U.S. auto manufacturers, insurance carriers and automated vehicle technology companies. The organization studies driver behavior, including how drivers respond to and interact with adaptive cruise control, semi-autonomous parking assistance, vehicle infotainment systems and smartphones. That data is shared with consortium members so they can identify how technology and other factors related to automation adoption can be improved.PAVE is made up of industry, nonprofit and academic institutions and aims to inform and educate consumers and policymakers about automated vehicles. The group creates consumer awareness campaigns, develops information for sales and customer service personnel and hosts hands-on demonstrations and public workshops. The goal of these efforts is to build consumer confidence in vehicle technology.Travelers’ white paper, titled Insuring Autonomy: How auto insurance can adapt to changing risks, offers the company’s assessment of the existing auto insurance structure, both personal and commercial, in the context of resolving claims and providing fair compensation to accident victims as vehicles become more autonomous. The white paper also describes how the development and rollout of this technology will help spur innovation, increase public safety, provide peace of mind and protect American drivers and consumers.

New Consortium to Develop a Common Computing Platform for Autonomous Vehicles

Leading companies from the automotive and computing industries announced today a collaborative effort toward making fully self-driving vehicles a reality. The new Autonomous Vehicle Computing Consortium (AVCC), officially launched at Arm TechCon in San Jose, brings together industry leaders from automotive, automotive supply, semiconductor and computing to serve as the leading organization for autonomous computing expertise. Together with the consortium’s growing membership, the initial AVCC members Arm, Bosch, Continental, DENSO, General Motors, NVIDIA, NXP Semiconductors and Toyota will collaborate to help solve some of the most significant challenges to deploy self-driving vehicles at scale.The first step toward achieving this vision and the common objective of AVCC is to develop a set of recommendations of a system architecture and a computing platform that reconciles the performance requirements of autonomous systems with the vehicle-specific requirements and limitations in terms of size, temperature range, power consumption and safety. NEMA TS 10 Connected Vehicle Infrastructure-Roadside Equipment

A new National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) Standard will harmonize and could accelerate deployment of connected vehicle roadside infrastructure technology, according to a preview of the Standard presented at the Intelligent Transportation Society of Georgia (ITSGA) Annual Meeting in Athens, GA.
A vital component of the connected vehicle ecosystem is the ability for vehicles and the infrastructure to communicate with each other regardless of the type of device or underlying technology. With NEMA TS 10, Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) and Cellular Vehicle to Everything (C-V2X) can work together in the same spectrum via a dual-mode or dual active roadside connected vehicle device. The roadside connected vehicle devices proposed are designed for extensibility and provide the ability to implement future wireless technologies and applications without the need for replacement within the devices expected service life,” Mr. Griffith said. The NEMA Connected Vehicle Infrastructure Technical Committee is currently drafting the Standard and is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.

CES Asia 2018 to Feature Largest Vehicle Technology Exhibit to Date

The Consumer Technology Association (CTA) announced today that CES Asia 2018 will feature the largest vehicle technology exhibit to date with leading automakers and vehicle tech companies launching new self-driving technologies and the latest concept cars. Advances in technology are making cars safer and more connected. At CES Asia audiences will experience the latest breakthroughs in self-driving vehicles and more interactive features, including more integrated applications of artificial intelligence. Horizon Robotics, whose embedded AI solution is giving self-driving vehicles its “brain,” will debut at the show. Baidu will offer two driving demos onsite, self-driving level 3 (conditional automation) and self-driving level 4 (high automation) on a newly expanded outdoor exhibit area. CES Asia will run June 13-15, 2018 at the Shanghai New International Expo Center (SNIEC). “Asia is the perfect market for the advancements in self-driving technology where major cities will benefit from the gains these technologies bring – removal of human error, fewer accidents and improved mobility for seniors and people with disabilities,” said John T. Kelley, senior director, international programs and show director, CES Asia. “Those capabilities will all be at CES Asia with the latest in concept cars and demos. Hyundai offered self-driving rides during the Winter Games in PyeongChang and attendees will be wowed by what they bring to CES Asia as part of our interactive show floor.”Hyundai will return for its second year to debut Nexo, a fuel cell electric vehicle with an estimated driving range of 370 miles, 105 more than its predecessor. Commission welcomes ambitious agreement on first ever EU legislation to monitor and report CO2 emissions from heavy-duty vehicles

Representatives from the European Parliament and the Council reached a provisional agreement on the Regulation for monitoring and reporting CO2 emissions and fuel consumption data from new heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs), i.e. lorries, buses and coaches. This is the first ever EU legislation focusing on the CO2 emissions from these vehicles. The new rules are part of the EU’s Strategy on low-emission mobility and Communication on delivering on low-emission mobility laying out actions for a fundamental modernisation of European mobility and transport. Welcoming the political agreement, Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Cañete said: “This agreement is proof of Europe’s firm intention to curb the growing CO2 emissions from heavy-duty vehicles. I thank the European Parliament and the Council for their work to reach this ambitious outcome. With this new robust, reliable and transparent monitoring and reporting system, we are on track for the next step: CO2 emissions standards for heavy-duty vehicles to be proposed in May 2018.” Accelerating the shift to clean and sustainable mobility is essential to improve the quality of life and health of citizens and contribute to the EU’s climate objectives under the Paris Agreement. The clean mobility transition offers major opportunities for the European economy and reinforces the EU’s global leadership in clean vehicles. Monitoring and reporting CO2 emissions and fuel consumption of new heavy-duty vehicles will also increase transparency enabling transport operators to make well-informed purchasing decisions and save fuel costs. It will also drive innovation amongst European manufacturers.

AFSA’s Annual Vehicle Finance Conference & Expo Convenes Next Week

The American Financial Services Association (AFSA) will hold its annual Vehicle Finance Conference & Expo next week, March 20-22, at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, highlighting the creative and disruptive influence of innovation on the industry.

Milrem Robotics Introduces Next Generation Autonomous Vehicle

During UMEX 2018 in Abu Dhabi, Milrem Robotics introduces the next generation THeMIS unmanned ground vehicle intended specifically for desert terrain and hot climates that is also equipped with autonomous capabilities.
After IDEX 2017 where the THeMIS was exhibited last, the vehicle stayed in the Emirates and went through rigorous tests in the desert climate and terrain. Knowledge gained from those tests have been incorporated into the new version of the THeMIS, internally designated the Type 4.The new THeMIS is 30 cm longer and has significantly better traction in desert conditions as well as better cooling systems. The vehicle has a larger payload area that can be used to carry different remote weapon systems, surveillance and C-IED equipment etc.Weapon systems integrations have already been done together with Singapore Technologies Kinetics, Aselsan and FN Herstal.The company has also developed the autonomous control system for the vehicle, specifically with waypoint navigation. This feature allows the UGV to follow a predetermined path without the need for the operator to control it.This would make the UGV ideal for perimeter patrol, especially when equipped with a remote weapon station that, in addition to detecting enemy forces, makes it possible to take immediately action against them. The system can simultaneously send crucial surveillance data back to the headquarters and forces inside the perimeter.

Pulse laser diodes from Osram Opto Semiconductors have been featured in cars for more than 10 years for time-of-flight (TOF) measurements in adaptive cruise control (ACC) systems and automatic braking systems. At AutoMobili-D, Osram will showcase its laser and LEDs in a number of innovative applications for autonomous vehicles and ADAS, including:An industry-first long range infrared 4D camera concept from Vergence Automation uses 190 Osram infrared LEDs. 4D imaging, when applied to autonomous vehicle use, will be a boon to computer vision, machine learning, and deep learning.
The GazeT Driver Monitoring Global Shutter Image Sensor Demo System from ON Semiconductor uses Osram’s 940 nm infrared LEDs.
Osram lasers dedicated to LIDAR applications are based on the company’s extremely efficient, high-power infrared pulse laser with 905 nm wavelength. Vehicle-sharing technologies: standalone smartphone-based virtual key solutions will improve user experience

Cloud & the Car: GM and IBM Present Use Cases that Actually Impact

londonLondon, UK The auto industry is currently buzzing with key words like autonomous cars, Big Data, IoT and cloud. This industry – once called conservative – is making more noise about emerging technologies than even the consumer electronics space. Apart from the clamour to demonstrate real business benefits, it even presents use cases in real time. Cloud is one such area. IBM, for example, showcases a cloud-based predictive maintenance and real-time diagnostics platform at the 2015 Frankfurt motor show. This could possibly highlight a new era, in which IoT will not merely be used as a purchase puller but more as a tool that can impact internal savings and improve bottom line performance of auto manufacturers. Although having been here all along, cloud services are now coming into play, as approx. 90 percent of vehicles are expected to be connected by 2020. Everyone is talking about how data from vehicles can enable services such as predictive diagnostics, UBI and other consumer centric services. Cloud services however, are currently only being used to harness typical use cases such as ERP, CRM, marketing, talent acquisition and training. The justification of such a shift comes from IBM’s partnership with a Tier 1 supplier like Continental. The latter will be using IBM cloud services for their eHorizon solution by applying analytics and managing complex data streams. The idea behind such a partnership stems from the fact that there needs to be a collaborative effort from the industry to enable the cloud to harness benefits. In such a scenario Continental will have direct relationships with OEMs, and IBM would become their managed service provider for data analysis. What IBM has previously done was to process as well as return vehicle raw data using tools like SPSS and others. Now they have gone a step ahead. By using their IoT solution for the auto industry, they will be able to showcase insights for newer applications applying the raw data. Additionally, even secured data transfers and data privacy would be taken care of by help of cyber secured protocols which happen to be key challenges in the process of the cloud adoption. Such partnerships add great value to OEMs, especially premium OEMs. Take the classic case of an OEM which loses track of its customer beyond the vehicle sale. GM’s prognostics entry is focused on three things namely the battery, starter, and fuel pump. It identifies diagnostic trouble codes which show up any kind of an irregularity on the functions of these elements that are transmitted back to their OnStar cloud server, which essentially means two things:
1. Reinstating the use of 4G LTE which is very practical in this case to understand the severity of fault code in real-time and
2. Off board algorithm processing, which means processing information in the cloud, negating the need for on-board processing that takes a toll on the on-board TCU requiring high computational capacity.
Basically this means that GM is not only minimizing their cost due to their in-house embedded expertise and cloud processing but it is also supporting customers with proactive monitoring of the vehicle. This is GM’s distinct edge to reduce recall/warranty issues and improve the bottom-line. Ford’s Microsoft Azure platform is another example, which is cloud based (OTA) updating where the goal of their FSDN is to keep vehicles up-to-date and relevant throughout the vehicle ownership period. The cloud and the car will not only achieve off board analysis in real time but can also aid OEMs harness critical data sets that provides them a medium of revenue prospects which directly influences their bottom line, example maintenance services opportunities and warranty analytics. OEMs who do not have an internal capability should ideally work with cloud based ecosystem partners to leverage their strengths in terms of managed services, reduced investments on licensing fee and real-time computational power. As for cloud based service providers, they are expected to generate revenues in excess of 50 percent by 2020 using high performance computing for the future of the automotive industry which will be determined by autonomous vehicles and cloud based connected car platform solutions. This has placed them at a disadvantage to independent aftermarket telematics vendors, whose core competence is in transport operation. OEMs have typically limited client contact after selling the vehicle. But this is expected to change once OEMs gradually start offering fleet management systems (FMS) as a standard in their models.New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.automotive.frost.com), Strategic Update of European Medium and Heavy-duty Commercial Vehicle Telematics Market, finds that the market registered sales of 542 million in 2010 and estimates this to reach 1.3 billion in 2017. Frost & Sullivan anticipates almost half the vehicles produced to have a FMS as a standard line-fit by 2017. Telematics solutions supporting an open and flexible platform will allow vehicle manufacturers to survive long-term in this competitive market. Some OEMs might consider offering FMS as a standard based on the country in which they are being offered, while others might base it on models, changing platforms, miles driven or pricing. Nissan Releases Latest Safety Innovations

Rolle, Switzerland. Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. released its latest safety technologies to help reduce fatal and serious injuries caused by accidents involving vehicles, based on the Company’s “Safety Shield” concept. By improving signal processing technology of vehicle-equipped cameras which helps enable the detection of people, other vehicles, road and obstacles around the vehicle, the Acceleration Suppression for Pedal Misapplication and Multi-Sensing System with Rear Camera help drivers to take avoidance behavior before an accident might occur. In addition, the Predictive Forward Collision Warning System, which uses millimeter-wave radar to detect the deceleration of the second vehicle in front, alerts the driver in advance of a sudden drop in speed of the vehicle two cars ahead. In car parks or other confined areas, in order to help mitigate collisions with obstacles such as walls due to the driver’s misapplication of the accelerator instead of the brake or pressing on the accelerator too hard, Nissan has developed a function to recognize whether the vehicle is on a road or in a car park by using image signal data acquired by the Around View Monitor’s four unit cameras. When the driver presses the accelerator pedal to the floor, this function allows the vehicle to accelerate if it is on a road, and does not in a parking space. This system is also designed to detect obstacles using sonar, and automatically applies the brake to help avoid or mitigate collisions when the vehicle is in danger of touching or colliding with nearby obstacles.
Using the Around View Monitor image processing technology, Nissan developed Multi-Sensing System with Rear Camera, which detects people, other vehicles and road conditions in the rear and sides of the vehicle, to alert drivers of possible collision risks. This system has the following three functions and will be installed in new models from 2012, followed by global distribution.
When the vehicle is placed in reverse, the rear camera’s image processing function works to detect moving objects for example pedestrians around the vehicle. On detection of a moving object, the driver is warned with a buzzer and display signals. Nissan plans to apply this function to Around View Monitor in the Elgrand, where minor changes are planned for this November. To help prevent pileup accidents resulting from the deceleration of vehicles in front and out of view, a sensor installed in the front of the vehicle analyzes the relative velocity and the vehicular gap existing between the two vehicles in front. When the system determines the need to decelerate, it warns the driver in advance with a buzzer, signal on display, and also by tightening the seat belt.
