Operation IRINI: inspection of a Turkish vessel

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 27 novembre 2020

The Operation EUNAVFOR MED IRINI inspected a Turkish-flagged merchant vessel in the Mediterranean. Given the pattern of navigation of this vessel, Operation IRINI had reasonable grounds to suspect that it could be acting in violation of the UN arms embargo.Prior to this action, as foreseen by the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2292 (2016), Operation IRINI had made good faith efforts to seek the consent of the flag State by giving the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs a 4 hour notice in line with the international maritime practice. Operation IRINI even agreed to extend this notice by an additional hour at the request of the Turkish Embassy in Rome, where Operation IRINI’s Headquarters are located. Having received no answer from Turkey after the elapsed time, Operation IRINI boarded the vessel and inspected it in accordance with internationally agreed procedures including NATO procedures. Operation IRINI’s boarding team acted with the highest degree of professionalism and no incident was registered throughout the action. The inspection was suspended later on, when Turkey formally and with delay notified Operation IRINI of its refusal to grant the permission to inspect the vessel. Until then, the inspection had found no evidence of illicit material on board and the vessel was cleared to pursue its route. Operation EUNAVFOR MED IRINI is mandated by the European Union to contribute to the implementation of the arms embargo on Libya in accordance with the UN Security Council Resolutions 2292 (2016) and 2526 (2020).These resolutions are binding for all UN Member States, including the Republic of Turkey. Furthermore, UN Security Council Resolution 2292 (2016) calls upon all flag States to cooperate with inspections. Operation IRINI is a concrete contribution to international efforts to help to end the conflict in Libya. It has demonstrated its ability to monitor arms embargo violations on both sides of the conflict in Libya, and it reports accordingly to the UN Sanctions Committee. We are currently at a crucial juncture for Libya’s future and the implementation of the Berlin Process. Operation IRINI’s mandate is more important today than ever to ensure the viability of the 23 October ceasefire agreement and the return to peace and stability in Libya.

Riverain Technologies Issued a U.S. Patent for Vessel Suppression Technology

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 17 giugno 2018

Riverain Technologies, an industry leader and innovator in proprietary image analysis and machine learning technologies, announced today that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has awarded the company a broad patent for its technology that forms a vessel suppressed, chest CT series using deep learning and synthetic data modeling. The patent holds enormous promise for improving the detection and diagnosis of lung cancer at an earlier stage while making clinicians more efficient, a first for computer aided detection.Riverain has been issued U.S. Patent 9,990,743 for its methodology to selectively remove anatomical structures from CT scans to optimize reading accuracy and efficiency for lung cancer detection. The technology is used in the company’s premier software, ClearRead CT™. ClearRead CT is proven to lead to more accurate and efficient detection of lung nodules, the early indicator of lung cancer. A range of possible applications exists within other imaging modalities including MRI, positron emission tomography (PET), full field digital mammography and tomosynthesis, where normal structures interfere with the detection and diagnosis of disease.

Destroyed two bomb in the North Sea

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 20 Maggio 2009

bombPortsmouth based mine countermeasures vessel, Hms Brocklesby destroyed a World War Two bomb in the North Sea this morning (May 19).  A large plume of seawater marked the detonation following the disposal operation.  The Hunt Class vessel is operating with the Standing NATO Mine Countermeasure Group 1 SNMCMG1 under the command of Cdr Henrik Rasmussen in the Danish vessel HDMS THETIS. The Group of ships are actively hunting for historic ordnance for both training and safety purposes.   Three Mine Countermeasures Vessels are currently taking part in the disposal operations.  Dutch and Belgian ships have also disposed of bombs in the last 24 hours and HMS BROCKLESBY has confirmed that another contact reported by a fisherman is a bomb, by using their highly successful underwater inspection and mine disposal vehicle SEAFOX. Lt Cdr Tom Tredray Commanding Officer of HMS BROCKLESBY said: There is a large amount of Second World War explosives in the North Sea and the aim of this operation is to reduce the risk to seafarers, particularly fishermen who run the risk of hauling up explosives in their nets.  As a side benefit, it also provides good training for my team in mine disposal techniques, helping us to maintain a good level of operational capability as part of NATO’s high readiness Mine Countermeasures force.” (photo bomb)
