Washington, Dc – More than 1,000 people have joined a popular campaign on calling on Assistant Secretary Michael Posner to help free Egyptian political activist and blogger Alaa Abd El Fattah. Better Life for Egypt, an organization of Egyptian-Americans with the common goal of advocating for equal rights for all Egyptians, immediately launched the campaign on following the arrest of Fattah, who was taken into custody after blogging about the Egyptian government’s involvement in a deadly protest on October 9. He is currently in prison awaiting trial for “stealing a military weapon” and “assaulting armed forces.”“Following the terrible events that occurred during the October 9th protest in Cairo that left 28 civilian protesters dead, those who condemned the military’s terrible handling of the situation were taken into custody for baseless accusations,” said Better Life For Egypt Secretary Mary Guirguis, who launched the campaign on  “Among those detained was Alaa Abdel Fattah, who has been a pronounced critic of the Supreme Council for Armed Forces. We believe these actions counteract what the January 25th revolution stood for and pose a stumbling block in front of the road to democracy in Egypt.”
News of the online petition campaign’s success is likely to increase pressure on Assistant Secretary Posner to speak out against the imprisonment of Egyptian activists. Within hours of the campaign’s launch, Better Life For Egypt had recruited hundreds of supporters on, the world’s fastest growing platform for social change. The group is partnering with Egyptian organizations around the world to promote the online petition campaign and ensure that Fattah is freed. “What this small organization has accomplished in just a few days is remarkable,” said Human Rights Organizer Sarah Marie Ryan. “Armed with only an internet connection and a commitment to free this man, Better Life For Egypt has managed to recruit more than one thousand supporters from all around the world. is about empowering anyone, anywhere to demand action on the issues that matter to them, and it has been incredible to watch their campaign take off.”
