Caritas preparing Turkey earthquake survivors to face winter

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 21 novembre 2020

Caritas Internationalis urges people to contribute funds to a two-month emergency programme to provide quick and effective help to people affected by the Izmir earthquake in Turkey. The 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck just off the coast of Turkey on 30th October in the South Aegean Sea and was felt in the surrounding countries of Greece, Bulgaria and Macedonia.Reports say 114 people died and another 1035 were injured. An estimated 15,000 people are sleeping in tents in parks, recreational areas, university campuses, stadiums or in the houses of relatives or friends. And more people are expected to be put out on the streets as many damaged buildings, which have been rendered too dangerous to be inhabited, will be destroyed.Caritas Turkey’s programme in Izmir will assist 2,500 people in coping with their losses due to the earthquake and help them face the rapidly approaching winter. Caritas will provide vital items people may have lost during the earthquake such as nappies and formula milk for babies, blankets, beds, winter clothes and household appliances for those temporarily relocated by the government. As the weather is getting colder every day with the arrival of winter, there will be an additional need for warm clothes, blankets and heaters. Caritas will continue to assess the needs to assist those who are living in precarious situations to ensure they receive assistance in the long-term.“In spite of the global crisis, we’ve really felt the solidarity of the local people in Izmir, who’ve been generously giving concrete help to those who’ve been affected by the earthquake,” says Nadir Nadhim, the director of Caritas Turkey.“We now need help in order for us to continue our programmes and give hope to those who are trying to rebuild their lives as we move towards winter. The €52,000 programme has already so far received €20,000 funding, which leaves a shortfall of just €32,000. Please give generously at https://www.caritas.org/donation/izmir-earthquake/

Fighting infections and resistances

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 5 dicembre 2019

Winter is influenza season. In the northern hemisphere, cases of this infectious disease peak between November and March, and fatalities are not uncommon. Influenza vaccines can protect against the illness, but they aren’t always effective. According to the Robert Koch Institute, the vaccines for 2018/2019 were only about 20 percent effective. In the iCAIR® project, Fraunhofer researchers are collaborating with partners to develop new, urgently needed agents against influenza, as well as against other infectious diseases that are gaining ground worldwide. What is particularly interesting here is that the research team at the Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine ITEM can test the anti-infective agents in vital human lung slices.

GEICO Reminds You to Prepare Your RV for the Winter

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 29 ottobre 2019

While there is still plenty of time for a fall camping trip, GEICO would like to remind you to start thinking about RV winterization. Of course, you can take your unit to a mechanic, but if you pride yourself as a “do-it-yourselfer,” there are many complete guides and how-to lists that will help you prepare your RV for freezing weather. Here is GEICO’s short list to get you started.Prepare your plumbing for a freeze. Drain internal fluids and add non-toxic RV antifreeze to the system. Inspect the condition of the insulation around your pipes and replace them if necessary. Preventive maintenance could save thousands of dollars in repairs if a pipe were to burst.Depending on where you park your RV, the sun could have more of an impact on baking and drying out your seals. Manufactures will recommend you clean your roof three to four times a year and inspection the seals every 30 to 45 days. A dry, cracked seal will eventually leak, and if ignored long enough, it will cause severe damage to the interior of your unit.Additionally, take time to inspect and replace any vehicle fluids, check tires for wear and dry rot if applicable. Consider blocking any vents or openings to prevent animals from nesting over the winter and consider raising the unit on blocks. Leaving that much weight settled for an extended duration may lead to flat spots or a weakening of the tire.If time is a concern, schedule an appointment and let the professionals handle it. Be sure to do it early, so you don’t wait. To review coverage, contact GEICO 24 hours a day at 800-841-3000 or use GEICO.com.

Earth Networks Announces U.S. Winter Weather Outlook

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 18 novembre 2018

Earth Networks released its 2018-2019 U.S. Winter Outlook today, predicting above normal snow in the mountains of the Southwest and southern Appalachians and below normal snowfall in the Northern Plains and Western Great Lakes.
As accurately forecast by Earth Networks Meteorologists, last winter was largely driven by a La Niña, which is a pattern of cooling in the Equatorial Pacific waters. It was a warm winter, in the top third of all winters for warmest and driest conditions since records began being recorded in the late 1800s.The Earth Networks Outlook considers a developing weak to moderate El Niño, Equatorial Pacific Ocean temperature anomalies, Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO), which refer to the high-altitude winds near the equator that impact global circulation patterns, as well as recent climate trends. Indications for this winter are that a weak to moderate El Niño is developing. Our current pattern will hold during December, but in January, the QBO will become more positive resulting in an increased risk of above average temperatures in the Northwest and Northern Plains. In February, polar air is expected to be confined north of the U.S. border, producing an increased chance of warmer conditions for most of the country particularly in the Central and Northern Plains.

Catella: “Is winter coming?”

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 16 dicembre 2015

catella1In December’s Catella Real Estate Debt Indicator (CREDI), the Main index fell by 12.7 points to 43.9. Both the sub-index for the Current situation and the Expectation sub-index fell sharply, showing that the surveyed banks and property owners in Sweden have encountered tougher financing conditions, and anticipate tougher conditions in the property market also for the coming three-month period.“Since the summer, the capital markets have been more troubled, and we have seen fewer issues of shares and bonds than in the first half of the year. Compared to the volatile capital markets, access to bank financing was stable in the third quarter, even though last quarter’s CREDI showed signs of a slowdown. CREDI is now showing that access to bank financing has also weakened,” says Martin Malhotra, Project Manager at Catella. The fall in the Main index is being driven by a significant decrease in the sub-index for the Current situation, which fell by 20.9 index points to 42.3. A decline was also observed in the forward-looking sub-index, which similarly fell below the turning point of 50.0.
“We see two main factors driving the cooling of the financing climate. Firstly, reduced appetite from investors in the capital market and, secondly, seasonal effects with the banks having lent large amounts to the property sector during the year and the weighting of the sector therefore becoming high,” continues Martin Malhotra.CREDI’s Main index showed a significant drop of 12.7 index points in the December edition of the debt indicator, to 43.9 from 56.6. This is the first time since CREDI was started in 2012 that both components of the Main index are below the turning point of 50.0. December’s CREDI also marks a change from previous surveys in that the sub-index for the Current situation (42.3) is lower than the sub-index for the coming three months (45.5).“Since the summer, investor risk willingness has also decreased. This is mainly due to concerns about a weakening global economy and expectations that the Fed will be raising interest rates. Looking at the fourth quarter and the trend in Sweden, this is in line with the changes that have taken place globally in the financial markets since the summer,” says Arvid Lindqvist, Head of Research at Catella.
In line with underlying market rates, the average interest rate for the listed property companies fell again during the third quarter 2015, to 2.7 percent. There is a high correlation between the average interest rate for the companies listed on Nasdaq OMX Nordic Main Market and the implicit yield on the companies’ properties. Since 2009, the implicit yield has fallen from approximately 6 percent to the current level of approximately 4.5 percent.“Since August, there have been few issues of preference shares and market yields have been upwardly adjusted. Although there has been some correction in the common shares of the listed property companies during the autumn, the shares are still traded at a high level in relation to book value,” says Martin Malhotra. The thirteenth edition of the Catella Real Estate Debt Indicator (CREDI) is attached and can also be downloaded from catella.se/credi. CREDI consists of two parts: one is an index based on a survey of listed property companies and active banks in Sweden, and the other a set of indices based on publicly available data. Read more about the methodology here. This edition also includes an analysis of preferred shares and an overview of the property market.
