An American World Series ‘Campionessa’ and a Winning Run

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 14 settembre 2015

polignano2Hunt and Simpson win Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series stop in Polignano a Mare, Italy, on September 13, 2015. The 31-year-old Englishman pulled off five 10s in three rounds of competition and finished with a running take-off and a personal best of 548.20 points, making it six out of seven victories this season. On his heels in the penultimate stop as well as in the overall standings is Colombia’s Orlando Duque in second, closely followed by Jonathan Paredes from Mexico only 2.45 points behind. In the 2015 Women’s World Series American Rachelle Simpson defended her overall title by taking her second victory in three competitions in front of an enthusiastic crowd of 55,000 Italian cliff diving aficionados. With an immaculate display of dives, Gary Hunt, the season’s dominating athlete, scored highest in each of the day’s three rounds and bettered his own point record by 14.30 points to hit an all-time high score of 548.20 points. Literally skipping to first place, the ‘brilliant Brit’ settled old scores with the venue in Italy’s south by successfully performing a running take-off – a technique that only he has ever attempted. The World Series’ most experienced athlete – 41-year-old Orlando Duque (480.20pts.) – secured this year’s fifth podium finish on second to keep his closest competitor in check. Mexico’s style master Jonathan Paredes (477.85pts.) defied the odds of the final round’s lowest degree of difficulty by completing the podium in Italy. Over in the women’s World Series, all questions were answered in today’s final when America’s Rachelle Simpson (241.60pts.) secured her second season victory ahead of fellow American Ginger Leigh Huber (231.40pts.) and Yana Nestsiarava (209.50pts.) from Belarus to retain the overall title. USA women – Simpson, Leigh Huber and wildcard polignano1Cesilie Carlton, occupy the final podium in the 2015 Red Bull Cliff Diving Women’s World Series. While the women closed their season in Europe’s mecca of cliff diving this weekend, the male cliff diving elite travels to Spain’s Bilbao, where the fight in the overall rankings gets tighter as only the season’s best six athletes will be granted a permanent spot in a 2016 Series. Behind the leading trio of Hunt, Duque and Paredes, five athletes are battling it out, with Andy Jones (530pts.) sitting in the longed for sixth spot. Can Russia’s Artem Silchenko (410pts.), the leader after the seeding round, or Czech’s Michal Navratil (400pts.) push the American off his position in the final stop of the 2015 season? All will be revealed in Bilbao with the coronation of the season’s best athletes during the World Series’ 50th stop in two weeks’ time.
Gravity-defying freefall punctuated by awe-inducing tricks – that is cliff diving. The sport’s best athletes leap aesthetically from almost three times the Olympic height with no protection at all, except their concentration, skill and physical control. In less than three seconds, gravity propels the divers’ bodies as they fall the equivalent of eight stories, reaching speeds in excess of 85kph.
Since 2009, the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series has provided a platform for breathtaking action and dives of incredible complexity, spotlighting the sport’s top athletes as well as young talent and in 2014 it introduced a Women’s World Series. In its seventh season, this rapidly-evolving sport will crown new champions during eight demanding competitions for the men and three stops for the women. Between April and September, this pure extreme sport will touch waters in natural and urban surroundings as well as remote and iconic venues across South America, the US and Europe and top it all with the season finale and the 50th World Series competition. The Serpent’s Lair is ready for the 2014 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series this weekend

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 29 giugno 2014

red bullred bull1It was an unexpectedly warm touchdown on Ireland’s Inis Mór for the cliff diving elite’s first stop on European soil. In bright sunshine, the stage 28m above the infamous blowhole ‘Serpent’s Lair’ was tested and approved by the professionals during the first training session on Friday. The landing site, the near-perfectly rectangular shoreline window, however, earned deep respect from the likes of reigning World Series champion Artem Silchenko and Gary Hunt, the current leader of the standings. The 1,500 people lucky enough to have snapped up tickets for the acrobatic three-second flights will witness 60 high-class dives into the natural pool over the course of the next two afternoons.  If 30-year-old Russian Silchenko wants to defend his title he’ll need to hold Englishman Gary Hunt at bay. By mastering his latest piece of diving art during the US-leg – a front 3 somersaults with 3 ½ twists pike – the three-time champion has made a clear statement: I’m here and I want the title back! Above all, the Brit still has to settle old scores with this location after a disappointing result two years ago. He’ll definitely be the man to watch, but don’t forget the other 2014 competition winner, the fellow Brit, Blake Aldridge. As the overall standings are tight, the fight for the top positions will be fierce and the athletes will face probably the most challenging conditions of the year.  Inis Mór, the big island among a group of three is home to the legendary Serpent’s Lair – ‘Poll na Peist’ in Gaelic – a ‘blowhole’ to subterranean caverns, which spurt out water each day as high tide approaches. What gives this place an inexplicable and mysterious nature is the almost rectangular shape of the hole, filled with 15°C water. Ancient mythology talks of a sea serpent which lived beneath the entrance. The sound of screeching, stormy winds is said in myth to be the great serpent making its presence felt. Only years of highly professional preparation, excellent diving technique and physical and mental strength allow for acrobatic manoeuvres at speeds of 85kph and safe rip entries.  After masterclass performances in America’s Deep South three weeks ago, can this competition in chillier conditions on the Aran Islands become another one for the record books? The high diving action at Serpent’s Lair starts Saturday and Sunday at 12pm.
It’s pure, it’s fast and it takes your breath away. Cliff divers leap aesthetically from almost three times the Olympic height and hit the water at speeds of 85kph, protected only by their concentration, skill and physical control. Since 2009, the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series has featured the biggest talents, the most promising newcomers, and since 2013 has also provided a platform for women. Seven tough competitions for the men, three challenges for the women – in its sixth season this jaw-dropping sport will hit new as well as proven ground in the Caribbean, the continents of North and South America and Europe between May and October to determine a new champion for both men and women. Maurice Lacroix is the official watch partner of the 2014 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series.

Gary Hunt wins home event of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2013

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 15 settembre 2013

Steven LoBue - ActionBy a margin of just 1.65 points, the 29-year-old overall leader of the current season was declared the winner of the sixth round of the World Series in a competition that was not decided until the very last dive. After a third place at the ‚Blue Lagoon’ in 2012, Gary Hunt wanted a home win more than anything else and he accomplished the feat on Saturday afternoon in front of an enthusiastic Welsh crowd. Second place went to Russia’s Artem Silchenko and Orlando Duque, from Colombia, completed the podium. More than 5,500 spectators over the weekend watched as three UK divers made the final round of the top-eight athletes for the first time this season and bright sunshine made up for a week of wet and physically-demanding weather conditions. With just two stops to go, the competition resumes in just two weeks’ time in the Brazilian city of Niterói.(DT_130914_RBCDUK_)

New kid on the rock

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 30 giugno 2013

Gary Hunt takes his first 2013 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series victory in the Azores, Portugal. Pure cliff diving directly off the cliff face, the reigning champion on top of the rankings and the youngest athlete on the podium – the circular-shaped Vila Franca do Campo islet offshore from São Miguel in the Azores archipelago made the perfect backdrop for the third stop of the current World Series season. Despite rough conditions throughout the entire week, the previous seasons’ dominant figurehead from the British Islands took over the reigns from Russia’s Artem Silchenko in Portugal to top the overall standings with a well fought win. Hunt won ahead of a reinvigorated Orlando Duque from Colombia, and the 23-year-old rookie Jonathan Paredes of Mexico took his first podium in front of 1,300 spectators. From the volcanic islands in the middle of the Atlantic the cliff diving elite returns to Lake Garda in Italy in two weeks’ time. 85kph, aesthetic gravity-defying freefall – cliff diving is the purest extreme sport on earth. The best high divers in the world versus gravity. Twisting and flipping 27 metres through the air and hitting the water after three seconds at 85kph. Three years after its inception, the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series is established as the pinnacle of high diving competition. In 2012 this unique championship will once more be the platform for the world’s most dizzying dives in seven stops between June and September in Europe, North America and the Middle East. Eleven athletes will compete head-to-head for the prestigious World Series title and spread the spirit of cliff diving all over the globe.2011’s top seven divers, including two-time champion Gary Hunt and his predecessor, Orlando Duque, have all qualified automatically for the fourth edition. 15 others – among them five pre-qualified from last season – will fight for one of four available slots at the qualification competition in February in Australia so that they too can be a part of the 2012 World Series. The field of eleven permanent participants will be added to with up to three wildcard divers per event who will for the first time get awarded points for the overall rankings and might have a say in the final results. In a sport where three seconds can be an eternity and even the smallest mistake could cost you victory, a head-to-head battle will spice things up even further. Only the top seven divers after three rounds and one lucky loser will make it to the final heat. Five international jurors who award scores from 0 to 10 for each dive judge the whole competition which consists of two required and two optional dives. US diving icon Greg Louganis, a four-time Olympic gold medallist, will again be part of the eleven-person jury pool, whose eagle eyes will view take-off, position in the air and water entry.Natural and urban, remote and iconic – six of the seven selected locations are new to the calendar and promise challenging competition. Kicking off in mid June in France, the World Series goes north to Grimstad (NOR) and will touch Portuguese soil for the very first time on the volcanic islands of the Azores one month later. The mid-season stop is hosted by Ireland, and after a touchdown in the sports-mad city of Boston (USA) – the only unchanged location for 2012 – Wales (GBR) welcomes the divers in early September. Only three weeks later the grand final takes place in the Sultanate of Oman, in the picturesque Wadi Shab.In its fourth year, the 2012 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series will deliver a series of innovations that will put the world’s high diving elite to the test. Only the best of the best can win the title!

Diving World Series 2011 in Boston

Posted by fidest press agency su domenica, 21 agosto 2011

A big cheering crowd, high level diving and a double touch down – Boston Harbour was the perfect setting for another glorious victory for English diver Gary Hunt, who secured his second overall World Series title today with a fourth consecutive win. In his homeland, American Kent De Mond came back to the podium after a hard season with only 2.15 points separating him and second-placed Artem Silchenko from Russia. This Saturday, cliff diving went urban: Instead of natural cliffs, divers used the newly installed platform on the cantilever roof of the Institute of Contemporary Art on Fan Pier, which is more than 80 feet above the water, for the tour’s sixth stop. A stoked crowd of 23.000 spectators surrounding the area around the venue watched the first East Coast stop in the United States in the Series’ three-year history. The 2011 World Series will conclude in two weeks’ time off the Crimean shore in Yalta, Ukraine.
New divers, spectacular locations and creative tricks in the air – the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series has come up with a few innovations for the third edition in 2011. Between March and September, the world’s best high divers fight for the title of World Series champion in seven challenging competitions. For the breathtaking three-second flights between take-off and hitting the water smoothly from a height of at least 26.5 metres, extraordinary natural and demanding urban venues have been chosen: kicking off in March in Rapa Nui (CHI), the World Series returns to Mexico (Yucatán) in April. The first competition on European soil takes place in Greece (Athens) in May, followed by France (La Rochelle) and Italy (Malcesine) in successive months. After a trip to the United States (Boston) in August, the grand final is hosted by the Ukraine (Yalta) on September 4. Red Bull Cliff Diving competitions are judged by five international judges with scores awarded according to the degree of difficulty and execution of the dive.

Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series

Posted by fidest press agency su venerdì, 17 giugno 2011

La Rochelle on Saturday, June 18, ‘La Grande Nation’ will have its eyes on the ‘little cliff’; only between 7pm and 9pm is the tide in the cold, 16-degree-centigrade, water of the Bay of Biscay high enough to secure the required water depth of five metres. For all those who cannot be onsite for the world-class high diving competition, the midway stop will be screened live on ServusTV from 7.30pm (CEST) with a live webcast on redbull.com/tv.
Three down, three to go after France – with seven competitions in the 2011 World Series calendar, La Rochelle represents a pivotal moment in the Series. Gary Hunt, reigning World Series champion, comes to France as the overall leader and, after a moderate start to the last competition, the Brit has been working on his diving programme: “I’ve learnt inward double half in training so I’ll try that as my first dive in this event. The massive crowd here in La Rochelle always motivates me to perform really well.”
Since 2009, the catacombs of the Saint Nicolas Tower have come alive each year when the world’s best high divers come to town. 120 steps to the highest platform in the entire competition, the 27.5m structure will be the focus of attention for up to 70,000 spectators, the biggest crowd ever for a World Series event. Why? This breathtaking action is only to be seen once a year and never before has a French diver had a better opportunity to step up onto the podium. Cyrille Oumedjkane can be sure of his compatriots’ support!
