The World Sustainability Organization is launching its Plastic Offset Program

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 27 dicembre 2022

We produce a lot of plastic; that’s a fact. And it’s also a fact that plastic pollution has become one of our most pressing environmental issues. According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, since 2000, plastic waste has more than doubled to 353 million metric tons. Also, less than 10% of the plastic used worldwide is recycled, the Paris-based OECD said in a report published this year. But now, the World Sustainability Organization (WSO) and its projects, the international certifications Friend of the Sea® and Friend of the Earth®, are offering Plastic Offsets to support cleaning our Oceans and in line with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Plastic Offset is an effective way to protect our ocean and its marine life. Companies and individuals who want a real impact can support an organization combating plastic pollution while intercepting a defined amount of plastic waste from the environment on their behalf. But offsets can be tricky. Accountability and transparency are vital in ensuring a company or individuals contribute to the right place. After all, who is verifying these claims?Founded by Paolo Bray and bringing over 30 years in the sustainability certification process, the WSO currently works with 1500 companies, 5000 products, and over 80 countries worldwide. SLAB, Accredia, KAN, and IAF accredit its certification standards. The WSO’s efforts not only ensure Friend of the Sea® and Friend of the Earth® products are operating sustainably, they as well have standards on social best practices and responsibility standards. How the world is leaving Europe behind

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 28 novembre 2022

Vladimir Putin, Russia’s president, is using energy as a weapon. Our data journalists set themselves a difficult question: how many people is this weapon likely to kill outside Ukraine? The answer they came up with was alarming. Although heatwaves get more press, cold temperatures are usually deadlier than hot ones. To estimate the relationship between energy costs and deaths, we built a statistical model that predicts how many people die per winter week in each of 226 European regions. This model found that a 10% rise in electricity prices is associated with a 0.6% increase in deaths, concentrated among the elderly and infirm. If the historical relationships between mortality, weather and energy costs continue to apply—which they may not, given how high current prices are—the death toll from the energy weapon could exceed the number of soldiers who have died so far in direct combat from bullets, shells, missiles and drones. It is one more reason why Ukraine’s fight against Russia is Europe’s, too. Our data team’s work sets the scene for our cover this week. Europe faces a crisis of energy and geopolitics that will weaken it—and could threaten its global position. If you ask Europe’s friends around the world what they think of the old continent’s prospects they often respond with two emotions. One is admiration. In the struggle to help Ukraine and resist Russian aggression, Europe has displayed unity, grit and a principled willingness to bear enormous costs. But the second is alarm. A brutal economic squeeze will pose a test of Europe’s resilience in 2023 and beyond. There is a growing fear that the recasting of the global energy system, American economic populism and geopolitical rifts threaten the long-run competitiveness of all European countries, Britain included. The worry is not just about the continent’s prosperity; the health of the transatlantic alliance is at risk, too. Zanny Minton Beddoes Editor-in-chief The Economist

Eight ways the world will change in 2023

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 22 novembre 2022

After two years in which the pandemic was the force shaping the immediate future, the main driver now is the war in Ukraine. In the coming months the world will have to contend with the conflict’s impact on geopolitics and security; high inflation; chaos in energy markets; and China’s uncertain post-pandemic path. To complicate matters further, all these things are tightly coupled, like an interlocking series of gear wheels. In our annual, The World Ahead 2023, we consider the outlook for the coming year across politics, business, technology and culture. In retrospect, the pandemic marked the end of a period of relative stability in geopolitics and economics. Unpredictability is the new normal, and there is no getting away from it. But here are eight of our best guesses for how the world will change next year. Tom Standage Deputy editor, The Economist and editor, The World Ahead 2023 The economist

Putin is dragging the world back to a bloodier time

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 2 novembre 2022

For much of The Economist’s 179-year history it was a black-and-white newspaper crammed with dense text. Our red logo did not appear until 1959; the first colour cover was in 1971; and it was only in 2001 that full colour was introduced on all inside pages. Since then, technology has picked up the pace, allowing us to explain the world in new ways. As well as films and podcasts, our interactive stories retain the clarity and analysis found in the weekly newspaper. Our most recent story plots 200 years of warfare to show how Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine ignores the lessons of history. Others explore the decline of the English language in Spotify’s music charts, show Mr Putin’s war through the lens of Russian state media and let readers pit artificial intelligence against some of history’s best writers. World Sustainability Organization Puts the Focus on Africa With High-Level Visit to the Region and New Projects

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 29 giugno 2022

Until to July 7th, the Director of the World Sustainability Organization/Friend of the Sea & Friend of the Earth will visit South Africa, Zambia, and Nigeria. The visit will highlight outstanding stories of sustainable transformation while unveiling new initiatives in favor of sustainable development, contributing to local, national, and regional efforts. The African continent has a vital role in the global movement towards achieving a more sustainable development. Indeed, Africa hosts a quarter of the world’s biodiversity, with more than 4700 mammal species and unique landscapes. However, on the path towards sustainability, improvements have been slow. According to the latest “Africa Sustainable Development Report” elaborated by the United Nations, in the global ranking that measures the improvement in the implementation of the SDG, the average score across all African member States was 53.82 in 2020. That means the region is halfway towards achieving the sustainable goals. The first stop of the high-level visit is South Africa. WSO’s Director will spend several days at the Rhino Orphanage, a non-profit company based in the Limpopo Province dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating rhinos since 2012. The Rhino Orphanage specializes in saving and giving a new life to baby rhinos whose mothers have been killed by poachers. The World Sustainability Organization’s program Friend of the Earth is contributing funds to the project to help the rehabilitation process, specifically the relocation of all baby rhinos to their new home, a 4800 hectares farm. The second part of this “African Sustainability Tour” will take WSO leadership to Zambia. The country, located at the crossroads of Central, Southern, and East Africa, will become the headquarter of the World Sustainability Organizations’ first Hub on the continent. Finally, the World Sustainability Organization will be at the Zambia International Trade Fair in Ndola. This year’s theme is “Promoting Value Addition for Sustainable Growth.” WSO/Friend of the Sea & Friend of the Earth will have a special stand in the Fair, a place to continue developing the sustainability network with the event’s participants.Named the “Giant of Africa” for its solid economic position, Nigeria also faces the challenge of fighting extreme poverty and building a more sustainable economic model. In this context, Mr. Bray will take advantage of this last trip stop to highlight the stories of companies that represent an example of good practices, especially regarding sustainability and social accountability. On July 5th, at an official ceremony, Friend of the Sea will deliver the “Turtle Safe Certification” to Atlantic Shrimpers, one of the largest fishing companies in West Africa, producing and exporting premium frozen seafood products. This unique eco-label recognizes the company’s efforts to protect endangered sea turtles, reducing the threat of bycatch thanks to responsible fishing techniques. It’s expected to count on the participation of Doyinsola Ogunye as guest speaker during the event. Mrs. Ogunye runs the “Kids Beach Garden” NGO dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating sea turtles while teaching kids about recycling and sustainability. The ceremony will take place in Lagos.

Pubblicato il QS World University Ranking

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 11 giugno 2022

Why the world is tipping towards mass hunger

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 25 Maggio 2022

People have become familiar with the idea of a cost-of-living crisis, but that does not begin to capture the gravity of what may lie ahead. The war in Ukraine is battering a global food system weakened by covid-19, climate change and an energy shock. Ukraine’s exports of grain and oilseeds have mostly stopped and Russia’s are threatened. Wheat prices, up 53% since the start of the year, jumped a further 6% on May 16th, after India said it would suspend exports because of a heatwave.Together, Russia and Ukraine provide 28% of the globally traded supply of wheat, 29% of barley, 15% of maize and 75% of sunflower oil (see Briefing). Ukraine’s food exports normally feed 400m people worldwide. The high cost of staple foods has already raised the number of people who cannot be sure of getting enough to eat by 440m, to 1.6bn. Nearly 250m are on the brink of famine. If, as is likely, the war drags on and supplies from Russia and Ukraine are limited, hundreds of millions more people could fall into poverty. Political unrest will spread, children will be stunted and some people will starve. Mr Putin must not use food as a weapon. Shortages are not the inevitable outcome of war. States need to act together, starting by keeping markets open. World leaders should see hunger as a global problem urgently requiring a global solution. Two years on, how has covid changed the world?

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 16 marzo 2022

Two years ago on March 11th, the World Health Organisation declared covid-19 a pandemic. What lessons has the world learned? Americans are taking stock and eager to leave the wretchedness behind them. But as they move into a new phase of the pandemic, planning for the future should involve a frank look at the country’s poor performance over the past two years. In our Britain section, we look at how London has recovered from covid. The declaration of the pandemic was an existential crisis for the city. Much of what had made the capital ever more appealing and successful—the crowding together of clever people, the excellent public-transport network, the restaurants and culture—was drastically curtailed. In China, the outlook is not so optimistic. Not since the early days of the pandemic has the country seen so many new, locally transmitted cases of covid. Clusters have been found in most of China’s provinces. While many countries are learning to live with the virus, in China each new case is testing the government’s “zero-covid” strategy, which uses mass testing and lockdowns to crush any hint of an outbreak. China’s scientists are looking for a way out of this policy. Politicians will have the ultimate say but the Omicron variant may force them to act. Zanny Minton Beddoes Editor-In-Chief The Economist

Why the world must stand up to Putin

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 8 marzo 2022

In the hectic days since Vladimir Putin marched into Ukraine we have been assessing his rapidly unfolding campaign—a tale of Ukrainian courage, Russian military setbacks, Western sanctions and political repression in Moscow. Stay up to date with all of our coverage of the war here. For the weekly edition, we have brought all our reporting and analysis together. That starts with the heroism and resilience of the Ukrainian people. In the first days of war, Russia’s armoured might shrivelled before the courage of the nation it had attacked. In the face of Mr Putin’s aggression, Ukrainians have discovered they are ready to die for the idea that they should choose their own destiny. To a cynical dictator that must be incomprehensible. To the rest of humanity it is an inspiration. If only this week’s bravery were enough to bring the fighting to an end. Alas, Russia’s president will not withdraw so easily. From the start, Mr Putin has made clear that this is a war of escalation—a hygienic term for a dirty and potentially catastrophic reality. At its most brutal, escalation means that, whatever the world does, Mr Putin threatens to be more violent and more destructive even, he growls, if that means resorting to a nuclear weapon. And so he insists that the world back off while he sharpens his knife and sets about his slaughter.Such a retreat must not happen. Not only because to abandon Ukraine to its fate would be wrong, but also because Mr Putin will not stop there. Escalation is a narcotic. If Mr Putin prevails today, his next fix will be in Georgia, Moldova or the Baltic states. He will not stop until he is stopped. Zanny Minton Beddoes Editor-In-Chief The Economist

Ten million reasons to vaccinate the world

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 17 Maggio 2021

This week we are publishing our estimate of the true death toll from covid-19. Using known data on 121 variables, from recorded deaths to demography, we have built a pattern of correlations that lets us fill in gaps where numbers are lacking. Our central estimate is that 10m people have died who would otherwise be living—more than three times the recorded number. Official figures suggest that the pandemic has struck in waves, and that the rich countries have been hit hard, while much of the developing world has seemed to get off lightly. But the overwhelming majority of the 6.7m or so deaths that nobody has counted have been in poor and middle-income countries. The virus has spread remorselessly from rich countries to poorer ones—and it is still doing so. Our findings contain an urgent warning. Unless vaccines go global, the tragic scenes now unfolding in India risk being repeated elsewhere. Millions more will die. Zanny Minton Beddoes Editor-In-Chief The Economist

Mostra Fredrik VÆRSLEV World Paintings

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 12 settembre 2020

The World Is A Sphere: Art from the Faurschou Foundation

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 23 giugno 2020

London – To support its continued production of exhibitions, across its venues in Copenhagen, Beijing, Venice, and New York, Faurschou Foundation will auction a selection of works from its collection, through a dedicated single-owner online auction in partnership with Christie’s. The World Is A Sphere: Art from the Faurschou Foundation will be open for bidding from 3 to 16 July 2020. The artworks have been carefully selected to reflect Faurschou Foundation’s global vision, its geographic presence uniting the East and the West, and its exhibition history for which it has become renowned. A group of artworks in the auction is being donated directly by artists who support Faurschou Foundation’s uncompromised global exhibition strategy. These include Elmgreen & Dragset, Christian Lemmerz, Shirin Neshat, Nikita Shalenny, Sun Xun, and Yu Ji. The proceeds from the auction will solely benefit Faurschou Foundation’s activities related to organising exhibitions. Through its uncompromising programme, Faurschou Foundation continues to support artistic production, champion artists, and offer visitors unique experiences. At the heart of the selection is a group of works by Ai Weiwei, featuring some of his most iconic creations from his Coca-Cola Vase (2009, estimate: £250,000-350,000) to seven sculptures from The Zodiac Heads (2010, each work estimated at: £250,000-350,000) and Kui hua zi (Sunflower seeds) (2010, estimate: £120,000-180,000). Weaving together traditional Chinese ideas and motifs with Western concepts, Ai’s globally-oriented practice chimes eloquently with the Faurschou Foundation’s own outlook. ‘The world is a sphere’, he asserted, ‘there is no East or West.’Jens and Masha Faurschou: “The recent times have been a test for every one of us, with our societies undergoing a major change. However, through challenges we also rediscover the power of humanity. We found strength in our relationships with artists we admire and have worked with for years, who have kindly agreed to donate works to the auction. We are determined to continue empowering their voices through our exhibitions in China, America, and Europe, as we stand by our belief that art is our most reliable vessel in overcoming the boundaries.” Katharine Arnold, Co-Head, Post-War and Contemporary Art Europe: “We are thrilled to partner with Faurschou Foundation whose programme establishes a progressive and uncompromised dialogue between East and West. The artists presented in The World Is A Sphere: Art from the Faurschou Foundation reflect the dynamism, pioneering spirit and ethos of Jens and Masha who are the driving force behind the Foundation. It feels particularly pertinent at this moment to bring contemporary culture together and celebrate a universal outlook. The online-only auction will run alongside ONE: A Global Sale of the 20th Century, Christie’s first auction to take place in a relay format, bringing our clients together in a truly global experience that begins in Hong Kong and moves to Paris and London before concluding in New York.”

“The world demands more democracy not less”

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 7 Maggio 2020

These are the words of the President of the European Parliament David Sassoli uttered days ago and which I take up again with a reflection because I am convinced that we have erected a simulacrum around certain words emptying them, in practice, of their real meaning. In this case, it is clear, not by those who pronounced them but by those who should make daily use of them in their political and institutional actions. This makes me say that there are two distinct, and sometimes incommunicable, languages if we think about what Europe is and what we would like it to be. Let’s not forget that the idea of a united Europe had for the constituent fathers a first important goal: to provide for a safe conduct to avoid the onset of other world wars that would have their trigger in Europe in the future. But we have not dealt with individual states and their aftertaste. Germany, for example, which caused two world wars and lost them, now seems to be making up for it with its financial and industrial power and wanting to claim to be democratic in the logic of primus inter pares but in practice by staggering its meaning to remain “primus” without “pares”. Today we are experiencing this behavioral disconnect even more as we are experiencing a season of radical changes in society that has become complex and fragmented with the consequent crisis of traditional mass parties and their ability to represent well-defined sectors of society itself. At this point we should say that the word “democracy” remains but at what price? We debased and humiliated it, making us lose the vision of a form of government capable of ensuring stability, decision-making efficiency, clear functioning of the political responsibility of the rulers and of the same role of stimulation and pragmatism of the oppositions. At this point, I ask myself, should we continue to talk about democracy without ridiculing it? (Riccardo Alfonso)

World Earth Day

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 23 aprile 2020

World obesity day

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 4 marzo 2020

Roma.

World’s First Quantum-Safe Connected Car Secured by ISARA

Posted by fidest press agency su giovedì, 9 gennaio 2020

Technology from ISARA Corporation, the world’s leading provider of quantum-safe and crypto-agile security, ensured that the Karma Revero GT demonstration car at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) can send and receive electronic voice data without fear that the information will be hijacked or harvested – even by a quantum-enabled adversary.
ISARA is among several Canadian technology innovators selected by the APMA (Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association) – Canada’s national automotive association representing OEM producers of parts, equipment, tools, supplies, advanced technology, and services for the worldwide automotive industry – for inclusion in the demonstration car at APMA’s booth within the Smart Cities showcase (Booth 1025).As vehicles are designed to update software regularly and communicate over the air, the development of quantum computers during the next decade threatens to make them vulnerable to hackers. Quantum computers operate differently than digital computers and will be capable of breaking traditional encryption algorithms that keep data secure. For the luxury electric Karma Revero GT demonstration car, commercially released products including the ISARA Catalyst™ TLS Testbed were used to create a secure connection using hybrid cryptography that combines ECDH and Kyber for key establishment and Dilithium for authentication – all algorithms implemented in the commercially available ISARA Radiate™ Quantum-safe Toolkit. This was integrated into iNAGO’s netpeople driver assistant to make the car’s connection to the cloud quantum-safe.“iNAGO’s netpeople assistant platform helps automotive companies deliver connected content and services that are unique to the car and personalized to each driver, so a lot of personal information travels across our networks that we need to keep private for drivers and for auto makers,” said Ron DiCarlantonio, iNAGO founder and CEO. “ISARA’s tools were vital to creating a secure environment that didn’t slow down data transfer to create a seamless experience that users can enjoy with confidence.” APMA brings together the most innovative companies in Canada to showcase the country’s cutting-edge automotive technologies. After CES, this year’s APMA demonstration car will tour auto shows around the world to illustrate how Canadian technology can improve a vehicle’s safety, reliability and driver experience.
Karma, a high-tech incubator and creator of luxury electric vehicles, chose to participate in the Province of Ontario, AVIN/APMA demonstration zone initiative because it recognizes the importance of thinking globally from its California home.“Karma is especially positioned to support luxury lifestyles with a smart and connected electric vehicle,” said Lewis Liu, Karma’s Vice President of Business Development and Strategy.
