Technology solution to end corneal blindness worldwide

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 12 ottobre 2019

On World Sight Day, the Tej Kohli Foundation says that a focus on new technologies is needed to accelerate the global mission to end curable corneal blindness worldwide. The Foundation is currently funding the clinical trials and development of a ‘liquid biosynthetic’ solution that could offer an accessible, scalable and affordable solution to corneal blindness that would be relevant to many of the 12 million people worldwide who suffer from this type of blindness.
The thesis of the Tej Kohli Foundation is that humanitarian efforts the world over will be greatly advanced by exponential growth technologies such as AI, robotics and genomics. The Foundation behaves like a venture fund by backing, incubating, acquiring and accelerating the development of technology solutions. Only successful projects secure further funding support, leaving the Foundation agile to back the projects that will have the greatest impact.Blindness is heavily impacted by poverty. According to the WHO, 14 million of the 39 million people who are blind live in India. 12.7 million people are currently waiting for a cornea transplant, including 6 million in India. The Tej Kohli Foundation’s ‘Cornea Institute’ at the LV Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad already conducts thousands of corneal transplants every year using donor cornea, largely for free. The Foundation recently cured five brothers and sisters in the same family from Rajasthan who had all been suffering with long-term visual impairment. But the limited supply of donor cornea and the need for invasive surgery means that worldwide less than 1 in 70 will receive a cornea transplant each year. Artificial cornea or keratoprotheses are expensive and can cost up to US$20,000. The Tej Kohli Foundation is backing the development of technological solutions, because ending corneal blindness will require an affordable, accessible and scalable solution that does not rely on transplantation. The Tej Kohli Foundation previously backed methods of synthesising artificial cornea from yeast and peptides, but new advances mean it has switched this funding to the development of the liquid biosynthetic, which aims to work by causing the regeneration of corneal tissue. The pro-regeneration tissue replacement could avoid the need for expensive corneal grafting and be applied in less than thirty minutes to fill a perforation or to repair a corneal ulcer. In July 2018 the Tej Kohli Foundation also made a $2m gift to Massachusetts Ear and Eye, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, to fund innovation in research into nano-string and DNA-sequencing technologies for early diagnostics and prevention, as well as ‘GelCORE,’ an adhesive biomaterial for replacing corneal tissue.

Worldwide spending on Telecom Services and Pay TV Services will increase by 0.6% in 2018

Posted by fidest press agency su lunedì, 12 novembre 2018

A notable decrease in the growth rate compared to the rate recorded in 2017 (1.2%) is mostly the consequence of new accounting rules introduced since the start of this year: mobile operators are now obliged to completely exclude their handset sales revenues from service revenues, which has had a negative impact on service revenues although the overall effect is neutral as handset sales would have gone up. “This is, of course, just a momentary effect,” said Kresimir Alic, senior program manager, IDC Worldwide Telecom Services Database. “We believe that the growth rate will recover as soon as next year.” Over of the 2017-2022 forecast period, the market is expected to remain in a positive mood, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 0.8%. Despite this negative effect, mobile will remain the largest market segment and its share is expected to reach 52% of the total market in 2018. The mobile market is set to grow at five-year CAGR of 1.2%, driven by increased mobile data usage and expanding M2M applications, which is offsetting declines in spending on mobile voice and messaging services. The fixed data services segment is another positive contributor: it is expected to represent 22% of total spending in 2018 and is set to grow at a 4% CAGR through 2022, largely driven by the need for higher bandwidth services. Spending on fixed voice services will decline at a -5% CAGR over the forecast period and will represent less than 9% of the total market by 2022.
From a geographic perspective, IDC expects the Americas to remain the largest services market with revenues of $624 billion in 2018. Asia/Pacific will follow in second place and EMEA in third with revenues of $541 billion and $483 billion respectively. However, the latter two regions will grow much faster than the Americas, mainly driven by the emerging country markets of South Asia and Africa.A graphic illustrating IDC’s forecast for worldwide telcoms services revenue by region over the 2017-2022 forecast period is available by viewing this press release on IDC.com.While there is still growth in some emerging markets the overall market for telecom services worldwide is now relatively mature as the latest forecasts show. “Developed and mature markets will only show marginal gains now, driven by technology migration and bandwidth needs,” said Eric Owen, group vice president, EMEA Telecommunications & Networking. “Most operators are now looking to invest in 5G and are struggling with the return on investment given the mature nature of the markets. Success will demand innovative and agile thinking from the operators coupled with some help from regulators in highly competitive markets such as Europe.”

Juliya Delani: Inspiration Worldwide

Posted by fidest press agency su martedì, 6 novembre 2018

Some of the most prominent newspapers around the world will start to simultaneously publish a unique article series Religion and the Public Space organized by the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, and written by eminent analysts and commentators worldwide. The series, which will run over several weeks, aims to offer newspapers around the world a unique set of commentaries by prominent thinkers and analysts. The serieswillbe published in five languages (English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Arabic). The project stems from the UNAOC’s global mission: amplifying the constructive role of the media in increasing public understanding of divisive debates, ensuring that a diversity of voices are heard from, and providing free quality content to newspapers around the world.“The UNAOC is committed to maintaining the broad intellectual reach and the global scope that enables readers to see how a common issue is experienced in different ways around the globe. Questions of the engagement of religion in public life are among the most pressing and complex on the international agenda and within many countries,” says UNAOC Director Marc Scheuer. The UNAOC Global Experts involved in the project were asked to provide informed commentaries on pressing issues of their choosing from a variety of perspectives and backgrounds. Together, they are part of an online resource of experts (www.theglobalexperts.org) established in 2010 by the UNAOC that aims to provide quality analysis and ensure a diversity of opinions in public and media debates. Throughout the series, experts address different aspects of religion and politics in the public space and reflect a variety of professional, cultural, and geographical backgrounds, and political perspectives–from concerns over rising intolerance of religious differences in Europe to worries over similar trends discerned in a number of countries of Africa, Asia, and elsewhere, or the role religion is likely to play in the unfolding transitions of the Arab Spring. The experts include prominent academics from the USA, Iran, France, UK, Malaysia, Brazil, Australia and India, but also civil society leaders from various countries. Through this series, the UNAOC hopes that these commentaries will inform and enrich important, and, at times, difficult discussions about religion in the public space.
About the UNAOC: The UN Alliance of Civilizations was established in 2005 as an initiative of the UN Secretary General, under the cosponsorship of the President of the Government of Spain and the Prime Minister of Turkey. It emerged out of a conviction that, in order to achieve sustainable peace, long-standing divisions and misperceptions between cultures need to be addressed. In April 2007, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed Jorge Sampaio, former President of Portugal, as High Representative for the Alliance. Under his leadership, the Alliance promotes dialogue that delivers change on the ground. It is supported by a growing Group of Friends of 128 governments and international organizations. The UNAOC is also involving many other partners. http://www.unaoc.org

The last supper

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 3 aprile 2010

Roman Catholics globally will join together for feast of Holy Thursday, to commemorate the Last Supper of Jesus the Christ and welcome the Easter Triduum, the holiest days for Catholics.  It was during the Last Supper that Jesus gave those gathered a new commandment —to “love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another,” only to be betrayed by Judas. Like Jesus, Roman Catholics everywhere have been betrayed – again.  The latest Roman Catholic Church sex abuse scandal which implicates Pope Benedict XVI, the former Archbishop Joseph Ratzinger of Munich, in a sex abuse case is beyond belief for Catholics worldwide.  How can these crimes still be coming to light when the Vatican has been made aware of the magnitude of the crisis? How is it possible that leaders of the Vatican still have not come clean about pedophile cases that were not properly addressed? For far too long, the all-male boys club has covered up decades of abuse with lies and secrets that have put our most vulnerable in severe danger, a far cry from Jesus’ commandment to live a life of love.  The Women’s Ordination Conference calls for an official opening of the discussion on women’s ordination. In a church reeling from abuse, scandal, and oppression, it’s long overdue for the Vatican to use all of its resources to work toward a solution.  For far too long, only ordained, male, celibate clergy have dictated-or tried to dictate-how Catholics worship, pray and make decisions.  Canon 1024, which states that only men can validly receive the sacrament of ordination, is unjust and does not value the gospel message of Jesus.  It must be changed.   We are calling on our members to take action: express their outrage and call for accountability and equality to their local priests and parish leaders,  reach out to victims and take steps to make sure children are protected now,  write letters to the U.S. Bishops, and discontinue all financial contributions that benefit the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. When women are full and equal partners in every aspect of the Catholic Church, only then, will the Roman Catholic Church be associated with accountability, transparency and justice rather than hierarchy, exclusion, and scandal. Until then, we will continue to raise our collective voices and organize actions that will bring our church closer to the gospel values of Jesus.

Caritas marks first humanitarian day

Posted by fidest press agency su mercoledì, 19 agosto 2009

Caritas Internationalis says that governments must honour their commitments to allow aid agencies access to vulnerable communities on the first World Humanitarian Day.  Established by the General Assembly (GA) of the United Nations in December 2008, 19 August is World Humanitarian Day.  The designation of the Day is a way to increase public understanding of humanitarian assistance activities worldwide. It is in part dedicated to the memory of all those aid workers who have lost their lives while bringing assistance to others, the majority of them from the communities they are trying to help. Caritas says its ability to bring support to the most vulnerable people in conflicts has been severely restricted by the actions of governments over the last 18 months.  Caritas Internationalis Humanitarian Director Alistair Dutton said, “From Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, Georgia to Gaza, Sri Lanka to Sudan, we’re seeing the erosion of one of the central pillars of humanitarianism: Aid agencies must be allowed to reach the most vulnerable people in conflicts. Governments must use this first World Humanitarian Day to reassert their commitment to safeguarding this principle as part of their obligations under the Geneva Conventions. The Israeli government prevented access to the Gaza Strip during  military operations that began in December. A Caritas medical centre was destroyed. Zimbabwe suspended all aid agency field operations following contested elections. Caritas members directly fed over a million people there, and their projects helped over three million people in a country where 9 out of ten families go hungry. In Sri Lanka, Caritas was one of only two agencies able to operate in the ‘no-fire zone’ in the conflict zone in the Vanni. Staff remained working in the area alongside the people, enduring months of daily shelling and hardship.  In Darfur in Sudan, Caritas remains operational following the expulsion of 13 international NGOs from Sudan and closure of 3 national NGOs including SUDO, a Caritas partner.  260 humanitarians were victims of murder, kidnapping and serious injury in 2008. Compared to 1998 when 69 humanitarians were involved in security incidents. Caritas united in sorrow for the staff of its members and of partners who were killed as they sought to bring peace in 2009. These include “Raj” Anthonipillai Uthayaraj, 26, a volunteer driver killed in Sri Lanka in the no-fire zone on  8 May and Caritas France’s Ricky Agusa Sukaka, 27, who was shot dead in the Democratic Republic of Congo on 15 July. Caritas Vanni Director Rev. Fr. T.R. Vasanthaseelan and Rev. Fr. James Pathinathan seriously injured in shelling in Sri Lanka in April.
