United Nations-led Partnership Announces Equator Prize Winners

New York. Sea-level rise is making life on the Carteret Islands off the coast of Papua New Guinea unmanageable. People can no longer grow food because the ground water has become salty. The islands are literally being submerged.
Tulele Peisa – a local council of indigenous chiefs – has responded by organizing the voluntary relocation of its people, the first climate change refugee relocation effort of its kind in the world. In their search for new land, they bring with them an environmental conservation ethos, providing a relocation model for other island communities. Tulele Peisa is among thirty-five groups announced today as recipients of the prestigious Equator Prize, awarded every two years by a UN-led partnership that recognizes “local sustainable development solutions for people, nature and resilient communities.”
Winners demonstrate outstanding sustainable development approaches from across the globe, demonstrating community-based, grassroots action to address environment, poverty and climate change challenges head-on. An extensive technical review process guided by international experts was undertaken over the last several months, culminating in today’s announcement. Winners were selected from a record 1,234 nominations from 121 different countries.“These are leading local examples of innovation and achievement that can change the world for the better,” said United Nations Development Programme Administrator Helen Clark. “They are not waiting for others to act. They are on the frontlines of sustainability issues and showing what is possible when grassroots ingenuity meets the defining challenges of our time – ending poverty, protecting our planet, and responding to climate change.”The Equator Prize has been endorsed by former heads of State Gro Harlem Brundtland (Norway) and Oscar Arias (Costa Rica), philanthropists Richard Branson and Ted Turner, a host of Nobel laureates, and celebrities like Gisele Bündchen and Edward Norton.
Twenty-five awards will be presented at a high-level ceremony at Lincoln Center in New York on Monday 22 September 2014 as a kick-off to the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Summit. Winners receive a monetary prize and join a prestigious network of 152 local best practices in conservation and development.A further twelve winners will be recognized for their work on sustainable land management in sub-Saharan Africa at an award ceremony on World Day to Combat Desertification – 17 June 2014 – in Nairobi, Kenya, through a project funded by the Global Environment Facility.Since 2002, the Equator Initiative has brought together the United Nations, governments, civil society, academic institutions, and grassroots organizations to recognize outstanding local efforts to reduce poverty through the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.

 

International Campaign to Stop Rape & Gender Violence in Conflict and the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence

London. Four Nobel peace laureates, six survivors of sexual violence and actor Danai Gurira (“The Walking Dead”) are among the interviewees available to the media throughout the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in London from June 10-13.
They are leading a delegation of almost 90 activists – including grassroots women’s leaders from conflict countries – organised by the International Campaign to Stop Rape & Gender Violence in Conflict, the first and only global network of civil society organisations working to end sexual violence. This 700-member strong network brings together legal, medical and protection experts, as well as service providers and advocates.
Danai Gurira, American Actor, Star of The Walking Dead. Danai is an award-winning playwright who has penned numerous works that highlight the strength of African women overcoming war, poverty and disease. She is also star of the American hit series, The Walking Dead.

Jody Williams, USA (language: English/Spanish): Jody is a disarmament expert whose leadership forged the first global treaty banning landmines in 1997. She can also speak from the perspective of a survivor – in the 1980s she survived a politically motivated sexual attack by a member of El Salvador’s notorious death squad.Her specialist topics including sexual violence and disarmament.
Tawakkol Karman, Yemen (languages: English/Arabic): Tawakkol is known as the Mother of the Revolution for her role to promote the safety and participation of women in peacebuilding processes in Yemen.
– Her specialist subject areas include nonviolent resistance in Yemen, documenting human rights abuses, supporting women journalists.
Shirin Ebadi, Iran (Language: Farsi): Shirin Ebadi, one of the first female judges in Iran, is a strong advocate for the rights of women, children and political prisoners.Her specialist subject areas including justice, political prisoners in Iran and Women’s Rights in Iran.

Hania Moheeb, Egypt (language English/Arabic): Hania survived a brutal politically-motivated sexual assault in Tahrir Square, an experience that catapulted her into the role of outspoken activist for justice.

Esperance Kavira, Democratic Republic of the Congo (language; French): After her own harrowing experience with sexual violence at the hands of armed forces in Eastern DRC, Esperance is now an outspoken activist who is fighting for justice.
– Her specialist areas include sexual violence in DRC, medical needs of GBV survivors in DRC, impact of armed conflict on Women in DRC. Jineth Bedoya Lima, Colombia (Languages: Spanish): Jineth is an influential war and conflict journalist from Colombia who was kidnapped, tortured and sexually abused in 2000. Today she continues to seek justice, an end to impunity and support for other women victims in Colombia through her campaign, It is not Time to Be Silenced.
– Her specialist areas include sexual violence in Colombia, Judicial reform, seeking justice for GBV survivors.
Valentina Rosendo Cantu, Mexico (languages, Spanish): Valentina is an indigenous woman who was accosted by 8 soldiers while she was washing in a creek, aged 17. She was then forced to endure a difficult journey to justice, which subsequently resulted in Mexico being ordered by the Inter-American Court to end the use of military justice in cases where soldiers commit crimes against civilians.
– Her specialist areas include sexual violence in Mexico, seeking justice for GBV survivors, and military abuse of human rights in Mexico
Wangu Kanja, Kenya (languages: English): Carjacked and brutally assaulted, Wangu Kanja resiliently rose above her trauma and now supports survivors of sexual violence to access medical, psychological and legal redress.

Born Free Reacts to Parliamentary Report on ‘Pet’ Primates

The Born Free Foundation, a global leader in animal welfare and wildlife conservation, today cautiously welcomed a report from the House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) Committee regarding the keeping of primates as pets, and urged swift action to implement a nationwide prohibition on the dangerous private ownership of these animals. Adam Roberts, Acting CEO of the Born Free Foundation said: “While the report echoes the concerns of animal welfare groups on some aspects of the keeping of primates as pets, in other areas it is off the mark. We are concerned that one of the main recommendations in the report is that there be more research on the scale of the trade in primates as pets before a ban is considered. The question is not one of numbers – it’s one of animal welfare. Experts agree that primates are ill-suited for private ownership, where their behavioural, psychological, and environmental needs cannot be met. Whether there are 1,000 or 10,000 primates in homes in Britain it’s too many.”
In fact, Born Free is already working to pull together the best and most reliable evidence on the matter. On Thursday 29th May, international primatologists, campaigners, veterinarians, lawyers, students and many more gathered in London for a conference organised by Born Free and the Humane Society International UK to answer the question: “Should Primates Be Kept As Pets In The UK?”. The conference included presentations and discussions on the welfare of primates as pets, the problems with the current legal and enforcement regime in the UK, and how other countries are dealing with the keeping of primates as pets. The conference participants agreed that the current situation is unacceptable, and it is hoped that the conference proceedings will be made available in the near future.
Born Free welcomes the fact that the EFRA report identifies deficiencies with existing legislation such as the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 in protecting the welfare of primates as pets; and that the report calls for a review of the Pet Animals Act 1951, which governs the licensing of pet shops and sellers, in light of the explosion of sales of pet animals online. The Born Free Foundation fully supports this long-overdue course of action. Alongside other NGOs, Born Free is calling for a ban on the keeping of primates as pets, with provision made for those primates already kept as pets to stay with their current owners (assuming their welfare is protected). WJC strongly condemns latest anti-Semitic outburst by French National Front founder Le Pen, urges action

NEW YORK / PARIS – Leaders of the World Jewish Congress (WJC) on Sunday condemned remarks made by the founder and long-time leader of the French National Front (FN) party, Jean-Marie Le Pen, who in video had remarked about Jewish singer Patrick Bruel: “We organize an oven for him next time” (“On fera une fournée la prochaine fois”). “For the umpteenth time, Mr. Le Pen has made unacceptable, sickening statements with respect to the Holocaust. Clearly, he is an unrepentant anti-Semite who is poisoning French politics, and frankly, a mild rebuke by Marine Le Pen is not good enough. If she wants to show that her party has changed under her leadership, she must strip nher father of his post of honorary FN president and make sure he leaves the political scene for good. If she again fails to act, the credibility of her party is in tatters,” WJC President Ronald S. Lauder said.
WJC Vice-President Roger Cukierman, the head of the French Jewish umbrella organization CRIF, declared: “We are shocked by Jean-Marie Le Pen’s anti-Semitic, provocative statements. The honorary president of the National Front again is displaying his habitual anti-Semitism, for which he has been condemned many times. The CRIF calls on all democrats to promote inter-ethnic comity and to condemn such postures of hatred.” The National Front, which has been led by Marine Le Pen since 2011, polled 26 percent in the European Parliament elections in France last month, becoming the strongest party in the country. Jean-Marie Le Pen founded the FN in 1972 and led it for nearly four decades until his daughter took over. Le Pen was convicted several times of racism and incitement to racial hatred. In 1987, he called the Nazi gas chambers “a detail in the history of World War II.”

The brilliant Brit wins the US leg of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series and Rachelle Simpson takes victory in the women’s competition

Hell’s Gate, Texas. Seven athletes in the final round, and seven ripped entries – it was a red-hot final following a competition that saw outstanding action from 28m and which included six 10s from the judges. The man on top of the podium was none other than the triple World Series champion Gary Hunt, from England, with his unbelievably difficult diving programme. Reigning champion Artem Silchenko came in second and American Steven LoBue finished third on home soil. 6,700 spectators on Possum Kingdom Lake witnessed the first of three competitions in the Women’s World Series from 20m and saw Texan Rachelle Simpson claim first place. Fecondazione eterologa

La neonata Associazione Italiana per la Donazione Altruistica e Gratuita dei Gameti (AIDAGG) è già operativa e pronta ad affrontare il nuovo assetto determinato dalla Corte Costituzionale con la sentenza del 9 aprile che ha abolito il divieto di eterologa. Mentre si aspetta l’imminente deposito delle motivazioni addotte dalla Consulta, già gli operatori e le coppie si preparano mettere in pratica le cure che, finora, potevano essere somministrate solo all’estero.Non mancano tuttavia le polemiche da parte di chi vorrebbe strumentalmente ritardare l’applicazione della decisione della Corte Costituzionale ricorrendo agli espedienti più fantasiosi. Da settimane, sulle pagine di “Avvenire”, viene condotta una campagna sistematica citando i pareri di “esperti” della materia, giungendo persino ad agitare il fantasma dell’incesto. E di recente, nel convegno tenutosi a Montecitorio lo scorso 5 giugno, la responsabile del Registro della PMA istituito presso l’Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Dottoressa Giulia Scaravelli, ha ritenuto auspicabile che “il quadro normativo esistente, sia nella legge 40/2004 che nei decreti di recepimento delle direttive europee (decreto legislativo 191/2007 e 16/2010), venga completato al più presto con il recepimento dell’allegato III che riguarda proprio la direttiva europea 17/2006, anche per la donazione di cellule riproduttive da un soggetto diverso dal partner”. Di parere opposto l’AIDAGG. L’Avv. Sebastiano Papandrea, del direttivo dell’Associazione, già codifensore delle coppie innanzi alla Corte Costituzionale, rimarca come il recepimento dell’allegato III non sia assolutamente necessario. Il recepimento della Direttiva 17/2006 è già avvenuto con il D.lgs 16/2010 che all’art. 4 (rubricato “criteri di selezione dei donatori”) espressamente prevede che “Il responsabile dell’organizzazione per l’approvvigionamento o dell’istituto dei tessuti garantisce che la selezione dei donatori sia effettuata in conformità ai criteri di selezione di cui … all’allegato III per i donatori di cellule riproduttive”.
Il citato allegato III del D.lgs 16/91 riguarda la conservazione di gameti del partner mentre il successivo allegato IV al punto 1.2. (rubricato “Valutazione del donatore”) contiene un inciso (questa sezione non si applica alle donazioni di cellule riproduttive da parte del partner e ai donatori autologhi), da cui discende con evidenza che la disciplina dell’allegato IV riguardi tutti gli altri casi, fra i quali la donazione di cellule riproduttive da parte di soggetti diversi dal partner. Oltretutto, prosegue l’Avv. Papandrea, vale il principio (già enunciato dalla Corte Costituzionale 18 aprile 1991, n. 168) per il quale le direttive sufficientemente dettagliate sono immediatamente applicabili anche senza preventivo recepimento. Va ricordato che la Corte di Giustizia è indirizzata sempre più verso la applicabilità davanti ai giudici nazionali non solo delle direttive self-executing, ma pure di quelle inattuate entro il termine od attuate in modo errato (cfr. Sentenze 13 novembre 1990 in causa c-106/89 e 19 novembre 1991 in cause riunite c 6/90 e c-9/90). Per il legale, quindi, non c’è necessità di ulteriore intervento del governo o del legislatore, sicché i centri, dal giorno successivo alla pubblicazione in Gazzetta Ufficiale della Sentenza, potranno applicare le cure con donazione di gameti applicando la normativa vigente, compreso l’allegato III.Come evidenzia la Presidente dell’AIDAGG, Prof. Laura Volpini: “Ritardare ulteriormente l’applicazione delle cure con donazione di gameti, vuol dire aumentare ulteriormente la sofferenza delle coppie e spingerle verso paesi esteri dove spesso sostengono costi esagerati senza avere le garanzie offerte dalla sanità italiana e dove la donazione non è gratuita ma spesso oggetto di sfruttamento economico”.Dello stesso avviso il Prof. Mario Gambera, Presidente dell’Associazione HERA di Catania; “Qualsiasi ritardo nell’applicazione della Sentenza della Corte Costituzionale è un prezzo inaccettabile che viene fatto pagare ai pazienti. Tantissime coppia, anzi, andrebbero risarcite per i costi economici ed umani sostenuti per i viaggi della speranza ai quali sono state costrette da una legge oscurantista ed incostituzionale”.

 

Pollini da Graminacee responsabili dei disturbi del 70% degli allergici italiani

Sono i pollini delle graminacee i responsabili delle reazioni della maggior parte degli italiani colpiti da allergie. La primavera inoltrata e l’impennata delle temperature, puntualmente avvenuta anche in questi giorni, è statisticamente il periodo di massima fioritura. Questo il motivo per il quale sfuggire alla maledizione del naso che cola e degli occhi rossi in questo caldo periodo dell’anno, può risultare davvero complicato. La famiglia delle Graminacee, infatti, è presente dovunque in Italia e conta circa 9.500 specie diverse, tra le quali riso, frumento e mais che formano le basi nutrizionali dell’essere umano. Il sistema di diffusione dei pollini è affidato al vento, un metodo impreciso, che la natura ha compensato con la produzione di massa, con fioriture che possono creare vere e proprie nuvole di pollini (una spiga può produrre in media sette milioni di granuli di pollini.) “La soluzione” da promuovere secondo gli esperti, si chiama “Immunoterapia Specifica”, più comunemente e impropriamente chiamata vaccino. Si tratta in pratica dell’unico trattamento in grado di portare alla remissione o alla guarigione dell’allergia. L’OMS lo riconosce da oltre 10 anni e ne suggerisce la diffusione e l’utilizzo.“L’Immunoterapia Specifica, consiste nella ripetuta somministrazione di estratti allergenici ad individui sensibilizzati con lo scopo di ridurne la risposta immunologica e clinica – spiega il professor Giorgio Walter Canonica Direttore della Clinica di Malattie dell’Apparato Respiratorio e Allergologia Di.M.I. IRCCS San Martino Genova e Presidente Società Italiana Allergologia Asma e Immunologia Clinica (SIAAIC) – La decisione di sottoporre un paziente a questo tipo di terapia deve essere preceduta da una attenta valutazione, sia della condizione clinica, sia del ruolo degli agenti allergologici scatenanti. La fase iniziale della terapia prevede la somministrazione di dosi scalari, progressivamente crescenti, fino a raggiungere un dosaggio di mantenimento che viene ripetuto ad intervalli regolari nel tempo. In relazione agli effetti immunologici indotti, l’Immunoterapia Specifica deve essere considerata come l’unico trattamento capace di agire sulle cause, e non solo sui sintomi, dell’allergia e di modificarne la storia naturale. Numerosi studi scientifici – continua il Prof. Canonica – dimostrano come l’Immunoterapia Specifica sia in grado di prevenire nuove sensibilizzazioni ad allergeni differenti e riduca la possibilità di sviluppare asma nei pazienti con rinite allergica causata da allergeni inalanti, inclusi i pollini.”Dare una soluzione alle allergie ed in particolare a quelle da graminacee è di grande importanza, in considerazione del fatto che se un soggetto è allergico a un tipo di graminacea, normalmente lo sarà a tutte le altre. La richiesta di approcci efficaci e razionali nei confronti del “problema allergia” da parte dei pazienti e degli specialisti è in continuo aumento, proprio a causa della crescente consapevolezza delle gravi conseguenze (sinusiti, disturbi del sonno, sviluppo di asma) dovute al mancato o all’inefficace trattamento delle riniti allergiche da pollini. Studi consolidati inoltre, hanno dimostrato come nei pazienti che hanno ricevuto il trattamento, l’Immunoterapia Specifica abbia migliorato la qualità della vita attraverso la riduzione dei sintomi e dell’utilizzo dei farmaci.La sicurezza e l’efficacia dell’Immunoterapia Specifica, nella modalità di somministrazione sublinguale, oggetto di discussione proprio in questi giorni dagli allergologi di tutto il mondo riuniti a Copenhagen per l’European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology 2014, sono un tema di grande attualità, che recentemente è stato trattato nel position paper “Sublingual immunotherapy: World Allergy Organization position paper 2013 update che ha tracciato le linee guida del settore, basandosi sul modello delle raccomandazioni dell’Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità (OMS).
“L’articolo – conclude, il Professor Canonica, che ha coordinato la stesura delle due edizioni dei paper, – è un importante aggiornamento delle conoscenze scientifiche con l’integrazione di nuovi capitoli su temi emergenti quali: aspetti pratici, prospettive, nuovi approcci e necessità di sensibilizzare l’opinione pubblica sull’opportunità di scegliere l’immunoterapia sublinguale. L’FDA, Agenzia Regolatoria del Farmaco degli Stati Uniti, ha recentemente approvato la terapia sublinguale, allineandosi a quanto già fatto dall’EMA (European Medicines Agency). Questa notizia, oltre a portare ulteriore rilevanza ed ufficialità alla terapia, aprirà le porte ad un maggiore impiego terapeutico della terapia. Auspichiamo quindi che l’Immunoterapia Specifica sublinguale diventi sempre di più un’opzione concreta per il trattamento di un’ampia popolazione di pazienti allergici.”

Questi operatori possono usufruire di diversi vantaggi: venendo quotidianamente utilizzati da milioni di cittadini possono facilmente instillare fiducia anche per l’acquisto di nuovi servizi, inoltre potrebbero essere in grado di creare prodotti di massa ma allo stesso tempo tagliati su misura del cliente poiché i cittadini, viaggiando su Internet, lasciano traccia nei database dei siti delle loro preferenze e attitudini, informazioni utilissime per personalizzare i servizi che ad altri competitor sono accessibili solo a caro prezzo.Qualcosa di simile sta succedendo anche in Italia, dove con l’obiettivo di incentivare i cittadini nell’utilizzo dei sistemi di pagamento online anche una realtà Istituzionale come Infocamere, si è attivata affinché i contribuenti possano pagare i tributi tramite modello F24 per via telematica con Infocamere Istituto di Pagamento.Ma perché tutte queste iniziative abbiano successo e si riesca finalmente a debellare il contante ed i suoi enormi costi, è fondamentale insistere sull’educazione finanziaria e sulla diffusione delle conoscenze base che regolano i mercati ed il mondo dei pagamenti, in modo da aiutare le famiglie e le nuove generazioni a orientarsi in un clima ancora purtroppo incerto.
