Pope Francis offers hope in encyclical on caring for our common home

Pope Francis sets out a vision for rebalancing the inequalities between rich and poor in his first encyclical Laudato Si’, on ‘Caring for our Common Home’.Caritas Internationalis President Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of Manila in the Philippines said the encyclical reflects what Caritas is witnessing in poor communities around the world:“I visit communities where people are living on trash heaps. Children are born in trash, grow up and die there. They feel like trash. This is not God’s creation, this is manmade. Pope Francis is inviting everyone to reflect on this reality. He is calling on us to ‘aim for a new lifestyle’, to change the economic structures that have caused so much harm and regain our responsibility for others and the world. Laudato Si’ will inspire the work of Caritas organisations for years to come.”
The encyclical touches on key aspects of Caritas’ work around the world such as the environment, labour exploitation, agriculture and social inequality. President of Catholic Relief Services/Caritas USA was one of the four people to present at the launch of the encyclical in the Vatican on Thursday.“Never have we so hurt and mistreated our common home as we have in the last two hundred years,” writes Pope Francis in the letter. “What kind of world do we want to leave to those who come after us, to children who are now growing up?”The papal letter looks at “the intimate relationship between the poor and the fragility of the planet”. It comes at a key time for global development. The UN will launch the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in September, where Pope Francis will attend.
World leaders will then gathering in Paris for the UN Climate Conference in December. “Recent World Summits on the environment have failed” writes the pope, calling climate change “one of the principal challenges facing humanity”. The pope calls on governments to make binding commitments to “ensure the protection of ecosystems”.The encyclical says climate change is a symptom of a wider sickness. Caritas says it calls for a transformation from the way we live now to one of greater respect for people and the planet. “The human environment and the natural environment deteriorate together; we cannot adequately combat environmental degradation unless we attend to causes related to human and social degradation,” writes the pope. “Every ecological approach needs to incorporate a social perspective which takes into account the fundamental rights of the poor and the underprivileged …by itself the market cannot guarantee integral human development and social inclusion”.Caritas says Laudato Si’ is above all a message of hope and of action. Pope Francis writes, “All is not lost. Human beings, while capable of the worst, are also capable of rising above themselves, choosing again what is good, and making a new start”.Individually, the pope writes, we have a responsibility to live more frugal lives where we end the cycle of wanting more as it means less for the poor and less for the planet. He is inviting everyone to play a role, highlighting that other faiths are engaging. He says that Christians must realise that their “duty towards nature and the Creator, are an essential part of their faith’”.

Social and cultural traformations natural resources and biotechnologies major research trends and comparisons in the Israeli and European research systems

Jerusalem, on June the 22nd 2015 the Center for political psychology and geopolitics research, European University of Rome (CRIPPEG) together with the Pontifical Institute Notre Dame of Jerusalem and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem organize at the Hebrew University, Mount Scopus, the second faculty meeting on the theme:”Social and cultural ytsnsformations natural resources and biotechnologies major research trends and comparisons in the Israeli and European research systemsò Professor Asher Cohen rector of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem will greet the meeting. Father Pizzaballa custodian of the Holy Land, Jerusalem will speak on the theme: “Sharing water, energy and social relations: a journey towards development and peace.  The sessions will be opened by professor Sergio Della Pergola, the Institute of Contemporary Jewry, Hebrew University of Jerusalem on “Demographic and cultural contexts of modernization in Israel” and professor Paolo Sorbi with Maria Medici, Department of Human Sciences at the European University of Rome on the theme: “New energy triangulation: Israel, some Arab countries, the Mediterranean and the Italy’s role in the scene”.
Professor Uziel Rebhun and Nadia Beider of The Institute of Contemporary Jewry will give a speech on immigration, ethnicity and standard of living in Israel.  The meeting of 22 June aims to illustrate several areas of research shared by the European University of Rome, a University of Christian inspiration, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The cooperation between the two universities has been created in the belief that today technological research (water, gas and biotechnology) needs to re-appropriating of a humanistic vision.
“Development is the new name for peace” wrote Pope Paul VI in his 1967 encyclical “Populorum Progressio”. Words still alive which show us the way to go.
Maria Medici, European University of Rome, CRIPPEG coordinator, shows that the Center has meant to provide “a place for reflection and interdisciplinary meeting highly specialized in scientific issues of psycho-political and geo-political issues”. The research center, continues Maria Medici, “has been interested for several years in surveys in Israel on lifestyle issues and people’s psychological and cultural behaviors. Among the topics to be covered by this second faculty meeting are: water, gas and biotechnology in relation to the development and public policy issues. The conference will consist of five different sessions.

Michelle Obama incontra i gli alunni di International school

Milan. Un gruppo di alunni di International School of Milan delle Primary Years ha avuto il privilegio di essere selezionato per incontrare Michelle Obama, in visita oggi a Expo 2015, e presentarle alcuni dei progetti realizzati nell’ambito di “Vivaio scuole” all’interno del Padiglione Italia. Tra questi, due video creati dai ragazzi di International School of Milan dedicati ai temi dell’importanza del mangiar sano e su come evitare gli sprechi alimentari, argomenti in linea con la campagna condotta dalla First Lady durante il suo tour in Italia. Insieme alla First Lady americana, i ragazzi hanno incontrato anche Agnese Renzi, moglie del presidente del Consiglio. “Sono impressionata – ha commentato Michelle Obama -, è molto importante che prendiate la questione così seriamente per aiutare a cambiare il mondo. Dovete essere molto orgogliosi di voi stessi. Continuate così”. Michelle e Agnese Renzi, accompagnata dalla figlia Ester, si sono fermate a parlare con gli alunni di ISE chiedendo cosa mangiano a scuola e se praticano sport. L’incontro, che sarà senz’altro impossibile da dimenticare, si è concluso con una foto di gruppo. L’International School of Milan è la più antica delle scuole del gruppo ISE che, da oltre cinquant’anni, è leader in Italia nella formazione in lingua. Ricerca sul dolore: Premiazione ricercatori

La cosiddetta “memoria” del dolore cronico, la riorganizzazione corticale nella sindrome da dolore regionale complesso (CRPS), il rapporto fra epigenetica e dolore, le conseguenze della nevralgia posterpetica e un approfondimento sui meccanismi di trasmissione del dolore parossistico: sono solo alcuni dei progetti di ricerca premiati anche quest’anno dall’Efic-Grünenthal Grant (E-G-G), il Premio promosso sin dal 2004 dalla European Pain Federation EFIC®, grazie al sostegno incondizionato della Società Farmaceutica Grünenthal GmbH, per aiutare i giovani ricercatori di tutta Europa a tradurre in reali progetti scientifici le proprie ipotesi sperimentali. Il focus scientifico del Premio sono le idee di studio innovative, che promettano di consentire avanzamenti apprezzabili nella comprensione dei meccanismi del dolore e dei suoi trattamenti terapeutici.
In particolare, Grünenthal ha garantito anche quest’anno un totale di 200.000 Euro per grant biennali, attribuiti ai progetti di ricerca più meritevoli: a ogni studio premiato può essere attribuito un massimo di 40.000 Euro nell’arco dei due anni di durata della ricerca. I finanziamenti sono assegnati – in modo del tutto indipendentemente da Grünenthal – dal Comitato per la Ricerca Scientifica di EFIC®. La Federazione europea e Grünenthal sono particolarmente soddisfatte per l’alto numero di progetti di ricerca sottomessi alla giuria scientifica nell’edizione 2014 di E-G-G. L’enorme mole di lavoro di ricerca prodotto testimonia l’importanza di questi premi a supporto degli studi sul dolore, che è una condizione assai diffusa in Europa, interessando un cittadino adulto su cinque. Queste persone sono afflitte da un dolore persistente o cronico, che impatta sula vita quotidiana di milioni di persone in tutto il mondo e che ha una pesante ricaduta economica.
I vincitori di E-G-G 2014 saranno presentati durante la cerimonia di aperture del 9° congresso EFIC® “PAIN IN EUROPE IX” (Vienna, Austria 2-5 settembre 2015). I vincitori, inoltre, avranno l’opportunità di offrire al pubblico del Congresso una panoramica sui propri progetti di ricerca e sui loro progressi nel corso del Simposio “New Findings in Clinical Pain Research”, che si terrà nell’ambito del Congresso di Vienna il 3 Settembre 2015, a partire dalle ore 18. Class action. E’ la volta buona?

Non esistono ad oggi statistiche ministeriali che aiutino a tracciare la storia della class action dalla sua introduzione ad oggi. I dati sui quali ci basiamo sono quindi esclusivamente quelli dei quali siamo riusciti a venire in possesso, senza pretesa di esaustivita’. Stando alle statistiche dell’Osservatorio antitrust dell’Università degli Studi di Trento, al 17 giugno 2014 erano state incardinate in Italia 40 azioni di classe. Di queste, 16 sono state dichiarate inammissibili, 9 sono state ammesse, 22 sono ancora in corso e solo tre azioni sono state accolte con sentenza di accertamento/risarcimento/restituzione (il sito pero’ non specifica se le tre accolte siano gia’ divenute definitive o se pendano appello/ricorso in Cassazione).Solo 40 incardinate e solo 3 accolte. Un flop. L’azione di classe, come attualmente disciplinata, non fa nessuna paura alle aziende, non e’ assolutamente idonea a metterle sotto pressione economica e psicologica, non le stimola a maggior correttezza nei confronti dei consumatori nel timore di una condanna severa (economicamente parlando) se questi consumatori si unissero in una class action contro di loro.La proposta di legge passata alla Camera (disegno di legge C.1335, ora al Senato S.1950) e’ sicuramente migliorativa dell’attuale sistema perche’ smantella quell’apparato di “punizioni economiche” per il proponente, che facevano si’ che l’azione venisse scoraggiata (spese legali decisamente superiori rispetto a quelle di una causa individuale, rischio di condanna alle spese e al risarcimento dei danni per lite temeraria in caso di inammissibilita’ della domanda, spese di pubblicita’ dell’azione). Tali punizioni economiche vengono “spostate” sull’azienda, che sara’ tenuta a pagare le spese di eventuali consulenze tecniche, i compensi del “rappresentante comune degli aderenti”, in misura percentuale tenendo conto del numero dei componenti la classe secondo scaglioni predeterminati dalla legge stessa, le spese legali dell’attore maggiorate in ragione delle somme dovute agli aderenti. In caso poi l’azienda condannata non paghi spontaneamente sara’ possibile una esecuzione forzata “collettiva”. La pubblicita’ dell’azione, che nella legge attuale e’ a carico del proponente, verra’ effettuata dalla cancelleria del Tribunale sul sito del ministero della Giustizia. L’azione potra’ essere intrapresa – da un’associazione, un comitato o un singolo componente della classe – per la tutela di “diritti individuali omogenei”, cioe’ per accertare la responsabilita’ di condotte lesive tenute da imprese e enti gestori di servizi pubblici o di pubblica utilita’ e per ottenere la condanna al risarcimento del danno. La disciplina si apre quindi a qualsiasi “diritto individuale omogeneo” mentre finora l’azione di classe e’ stata possibile solo per limitate categorie di diritti (consumeristici e interessi collettivi) e solo in determinati ambiti. Il giudizio si strutturera’, stando al testo attualmente al vaglio del Parlamento, in tre fasi: vaglio del Tribunale sulla ammissibilita’ dell’azione; decisione nel merito; in caso di accoglimento, liquidazione delle somme dovute.
Il potenziale aderente non avra’ bisogno di farsi assistere da un avvocato e potra’ aderire all’azione anche dopo la sentenza di accoglimento (nella terza fase) entro un termine stabilito dal Tribunale.Sara’ inoltre possibile anche proporre una azione collettiva inibitoria per ottenere l’ordine di cessazione o il divieto di reiterazione della condotta, che potrebbe rivelarsi molto utile in ottica “preventiva”, per evitare che una determinata condotta sia protratta cagionando ulteriori danni. In questo caso il Tribunale potra’ avvalersi, ai fini della prova, anche di “dati statistici e di presunzioni semplici”.Si tratta di un disegno di legge sicuramente migliorativo della disciplina attuale, che e’ pero’ ancora solo a meta’ dell’iter parlamentare, e contro il quale le imprese hanno gia’ iniziato una strenua opposizione, che ha gia’ portato il ministro Boschi a “prendere le distanze” (4) dal disegno di legge.Vedremo se il Senato lo confermera’, migliorera’ (dal nostro punto di vista) o lo snaturera’ facendosi condizionare dalla strenua opposizione di Confindustria e dai sostenitori di queste posizioni in Parlamento.
