America’s incoherent strategy on Taiwan

Posted by fidest press agency su sabato, 13 agosto 2022

This week we focused on our digital edition. Although our presses were silent, having worked overtime to produce a Summer double issue, we were busy covering the news for our digital products. Top of the agenda was Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. One way to see it is as a bold assertion of principle. China has taken to bullying countries that maintain even the most innocent ties with the island, which it claims. The speaker of the House of Representatives has every right to visit Taiwan and her trip may inspire others to stand up to the bully. Another view, as we explain in a leader, is that the trip is a symptom of America’s incoherent approach to China—the country’s single most important opponent. We also looked at an upset in Kansas, where voters rejected a proposal to scrap the state’s constitutional right to abortion. That was part of a run of good news for Joe Biden’s beleaguered presidency, including the killing of Ayman al-Zawahiri, hiding in a posh Khabul suburb. We asked what is next for Apple, now that it has sold everyone an iPhone. We reported from the 24th International AIDS conference in Montreal. And we suggested that the global housing boom is running out of steam. Meanwhile, it is not too late to enjoy the highlights of our double issue, including a deeply reported psychological portrait of Muhammad bin Salman, the most powerful man in Saudia Arabia, and an account of Russia’s distinctive brand of fascism.
